What is Assistive Technology (AT)?

AT is any form of technology (high or low) that aids individuals with disabilities in mobility, daily tasks, personal care and safety, communication, job duties, medical treatment, exercise, recreational activities, and creative expression. With possibilities afforded via AT, developers continue to create apps and devices with the disability community in mind.

Accessibility in the Google Universe

Google is the most widely used search engine. With Google, users can retrieve the information they seek quickly and easily. Google is well aware that individuals with disabilities need access to information too. They make information and technology accessible to individuals with disabilities through Google Accessibility features.

Digital Literacy

What is digital literacy? How can one get it? When do we need it? Digital literacy is the ability to understand/use digital devices and interpret digital content.

Digital literacy is required on a daily basis for tasks such as communication, work related activities, school assignments, shopping, travel, recreation. Digital literacy can fill a communication gap for individuals with difficulty speaking or articulating words.

Austim Expressed provides specialized training/lessons to help adolescents to develop their digital literacy/life skills. They have different modules for understanding the Internet, safety, daily activities, education, and professional development.

Prince's Global Impact and Outreach to the Deaf Community

Prince contributed the gift of his soulful and captivating music to the hearing community, but also made it a point to share his music with the Deaf. The artist gave 2,500 Deaf individuals a free, surprise concert at Gallaudet University with American Sign Language (ASL) interpretation of his songs.

Prince also disclosed his childhood bout with epilepsy in one of his rare interviews. He described teasing that ensued and his determination to overcome the condition. A humanitarian/philanthropist, he donated to various charities, particularly those that assist- ed individuals residing in resource deprived communities, and persons with disabilities. Look to the Stars notes the artist's significant monetary gifts (millions of dollars) to charit- ies including (but not limited to) City of Hope, Elton John's Aids Foundation, Elevate Hope Foundation. He also funded #YesWeCode.

Prince had an undeniably positive impact on the world. May he rest in peace knowing that he touched the lives of millions with hisprofound talent and generosity.

Mothers with a Global Impact:Vanessa Fontaine, Avonte's Mother

Vanessa Fontaine is the deeply caring, hard-working mother of Avonte Oquendo, a teen with Autism who brought international attention to the serious need for improved safety measures and tracking technology for children with autism and other disabilities. Her son went missing after being unsupervised and running out the front door of his school. There was evidently negligence and/or lack of school staff monitoring students with special needs, despite installation and use of video surveillance systems at the facility.

Avonte's case was tragic and heart-breaking. Ms. Fontaine searched wholeheartedly to find her son and raise the level of safety precautions for youth with cognitive and speech disabilities nationally.

Thanks to Vanessa Fontaine's unwavering sense of commitment to protect her son and other vulnerable children, Avonte's Law was authored in 2015. The legislation assists families with securing affordable technology to track the location of their children with disabilities when they are not at home or in the event that they wander.
