William Street, saxophonistThe winner of many awards including the Certificat d'Aptitude deSaxophone, France's highest recognition of excellence in musicperformance and pedagogy, William Street has eamed worldwide respect asone of North America's finest instrumentalists. He holds degrees fromNorthwestern University, the Conservatoire National de Bordeaux, Franceand the Catholic University of America. His teachers have included GeorgeEtheridge, Frederick L. Hemke, Jean-Marie Londeix, Frederick Ockwell andJohn P. Paynter. Dr Street, a member of the Bra-Street Duo and theEnsemble International de Saxophones de Bordeaux, was also a member ofthe Chicago, Washington, D.C. and Frederick Hemke Saxophone Quartetsprior to joining the University of Alberta Department of Music in 1988,where he teaches as Director of the University Concert Band, saxophoneinstructor, and chamber music coach.
He has appeared as recitalist, conductor and soloist with orchestras andbands throughout Europe, Central and North America and Asia, includingthe Milwaukee and Edmonton symphonies, the Orchestra FilharmonicaMarchigiani (Italy) and the Orchestra de Camara del Nuevo Mundo(Mexico). Bill can be heard on compact disc recordings Sunthesis: Les Septslies (QM6901, Paris), L'Ensemble Intemational de Saxophones(ACD0086, Tokyo), At Your Service - Legende by Florent Schmitt (Arktos94005) with pianist Sylvia Taylor and the Centaur recording of Evolution Vfor five saxophonists by Marilyn Shmde, recorded with the ChicagoSaxophone Quartet. His recent compact disc recording of Tre Vie, Concertofor Saxophone and Orchestra by Malcolm Forsyth with Grzegorz Nowakand the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra was nominated for a 1999 Junoaward. He has also recorded ̂ e/zos'axo (Arktos - SRI-CD97018), acompact disc recording of twentieth century music for saxophone and pianowith pianist Roger Admiral, featuring the music of composers Harbison,Karlins, Lauba, d'lndy, Rolin, Houkom. His recitals and concerts arefrequently broadcast on programs of the CBC radio stations.
Bill served as President of the North American Saxophone Alliance(NASA) from 1992-1994 and has represented Canada at music conferencesin France, Japan, Italy, the Russian Federation, Spain and the United States.He is the former Secretary of the World Saxophone Congress IntemationalCommittee, and was instrumental in preparation for the XI World Congressheld in Spain in October 1997. He has written articles and reviews publishedin the NASA Journal as well as the Bulletin de I'Association des
Saxophonistes de France (ASAFRA) and is listed in the new Englishpublication The Saxophone by Richard Ingham as "one of North America'sleading proponents of new music". Bill served as a member of theadjudication panel for the 1999 Glazounov Intemational SaxophoneCompetition in Moscow and the 1998 North American Saxophone AllianceIntemational Classical Saxophone Competition in Chicago. His published
work includes the English translation of Hello! Mr. Sax, ou les Parametresdu Saxophone (Leduc) by Jean-Marie Londeix, Elise Boyer Hall, and TheLife ofElise Boyer Hall in Les Etats Generaux Mondiaux du Saxophone. Heand Anna Street recently translated into English the Methode d'Etude deSaxophone, by Jean-Marie Londeix published by Editions Heiury Lemoinein Paris.
Pianist Roger Admiral was bom in Dogsnest, Ontario. His main teachersinclude Virginia Blaha, Peter Smith and Helmut Brauss. After rmdergraduatestudies at the University of Westem Ontario he came to Edmonton in 1988and completed the Doctor of Music degree at the University of Alberta in1998. He has participated in piano masterclasses of Cecile Ousset, PaulBadura-Skoda, Boris Berman and Claude Helffer. In 1990 and 1993 he wasawarded Johaim Strauss Foundation Scholarships for Lied-duo study at theMozarteum in Salzburg.
From 1990 to 1993 Roger was a member of the Hammerhead Consort.During this time the Consort was awarded the 1992 Sir Emest MacMillanMemorial Award and a First Prize in the 1991 CIBC National Music
Competition. Currently he is part of the Kovalis Duo with Montrealpercussionist Philip Homsey. This duo will tour 10 Canadian cities inJanuary of 2000.
Since coming to Edmonton Roger has introduced local audiences to themusic of many prominent modemist European composers such as PierreBoulez, KarUieinz Stockhausen, Luciano Berio, Luigi Nono, laimisXenakis, Andre Boucourechliev, Bemd Alois Zimmermaim, HelmutLachemnaim, Brian Femeyhough, Gyorgy Kurtag and Tristan Murail. Healso has collaborated regularly in concerts with Edmonton musiciansKathleen Corcoran, Allison Storochuk and William Street and with 1Coristi, Alberta College Percussion Ensemble and Saint Crispin's ChamberEnsemble.
