The Aachen Cathedral is one of the most famous examples of occidental architecture. It is the coronation church of more than 30 German kings, burial site of Charlemagne, major pilgrimage church and cathedral church of the Aachen diocese since 1930. In 1978 it was the first German building to be included in the UNESCO World Heritage list. A guided tour is therefore an essential part of any visit to Aachen and a ‘must‘ for anyone who loves historic buildings and churches (see guided tours page 15).

Rathaus
At the beginning of the 14th century the Aachen citizenship built the gothic ‘Rathaus‘ (town hall) on the foundation walls of the derelict palace building of Charlemagne. Between 936 and 1531 the banquets of the Aachen royal coronation ceremonies were held at this place. Today the monumental co-ronation hall still reminds of this time. There are also reproductions true to the originals of the imperial regalia, among them the imperial crowns, swords and the gospel books of sovereigns of the Middle Ages.

Couven Museum
Until the 12th of October 2019 the Couven Museum will be closed owing to renovation work.
Since 1958 the ‘House Monheim‘ in the his-torical city centre of Aachen has been an exhi-bition place of particularly impressive upper middle-class cultivation of home décor. The rooms form a harmonious ensemble of various interior design styles from Rococo to the Bie-dermeier era. In a large room display cabinet a selection of magnificent silver utensils of the 18th century are e.g. presented. More practical equipment in the kitchen – coffee roaster, coffee grinder and porcelain table-ware – shows that luxury drinks as coffee, tea and chocolate also found their way into middle-class life.

Grashaus
Aachen is the city of the Charlemagne Prize and has the special commitment of introdu-cing young people to the topic of Europe. This takes place in the ‘Grashaus‘, which represents the station ’Europe’ of the Route Charlemagne. The ‘Grashaus‘ is one of the oldest buildings in Aachen and of great histo-rical importance. Although the educationalists have adjusted themselves to their young audi-ence with monumental comic drawings of the Berlin artist Andree Volkmann and modern interactive media stations, the beautiful old architecture has well been preserved. After registration – visitors can visit the house with the historic charter hall and the central hall called ’chapel ’.
Admission: Only within booked groups or as participant of the public guided tour € 2,- (see tip)
Suermondt-Ludwig-Museum
The Suermondt-Ludwig-Museum undergoes an interim period. The house gets a new air-conditioning system and until 2020 it is only open on special occasions – e.g. Tuesdays from 1 p.m. – 1:15 p.m. for the KUNSTPAUSE (art break) (again from September 2019, before = summer break).
During the interim period the museum carries out research, restoration work and prepares exhibitions. Look forward to the great Dürer exhibition, which will be opened on the 7th of October 2020!

Route Charlemagne –A walk through Aachen’s history
The ‘Route Charlemagne’ is an excursion tour along all great sights of Aachen’s inner city. The ‘Centre Charlemagne – Neues Stadtmuse-um Aachen’ (A) is centre and starting point of the ‘Route Charlemagne‘, which leads to im-portant places and buildings, e.g. the Aachen Cathedral, the historic ‘Rathaus‘ (town hall) and many places more. Each station deals with its own subject of Aachen’s town history around Charlemagne, but is also exemplary for the historic development within Europe. War and peace as well as Aachen’s coronati-on tradition are in the focus of a visit of the Rathaus (B). In Cathedral and treasury (C) religious aspects are in the foreground. In the ‘Grashaus‘ (D) school classes learn all about Europe and its meaning. The ‘Elisenbrunnen‘ (E) tells us about the spa resort Aachen. The Couven Museum (F) demonstrates how citizens used to live in past times. The ‘Inter-nationale Zeitungsmuseum‘ (G) (International Newspaper Museum) deals with history and future of the media landscape. Last but not least there is the SuperC (H) next to the main building of the RWTH Aachen as a symbol for modern science.

Favorite spots
Our favorite spotsFor us Aachen definitely is the most beautiful city in the world! To prove this, we present you a selection of our personal favourite spots. Let you be inspired by us for your stay in Aachen: My favourite spot in Aachen…
...are the front steps of the town hall. Especially on sunny days me and my friends like to sit on the front steps of the town hall to exchange the news of the day, enjoy the sun, watch people pass by and I am are each time amazed at the most beautiful sight Aachen has to offer – Aachen cathedral! My personal tip: get there early enough at events e.g. the wine festival “WeinSommer” and at the cathedral jumping event “Domsprin-gen”, which take place on the Katschhof. Otherwise the best places in the town hall steps have gone. Whether in summer with a frozen yoghurt or in winter with a café to go – the town hall steps are like a premier seat with gigantic view of my personal favourite cathedral.
Kathrin, former trainee

...is the tower „Bismarckturm“.
From up there you have a fantastic view of the city: tranquillity and distant view let quickly forget the hustle and bustle below. You can also clearly see the University Clinic and the visit is free! Against presentation of your identity card or similar, the friendly staff of the cemetery office (left at the front entrance) hand out the key. Follow the way half right over the cemetery of honour and you will reach the Bismarckturm in approx. 4 min walking distance – in the middle of the green area. In the past adults paid 10 pfennig entrance fee – unbelievable, the “good old times”.
Reinhard Mäurer, city guide
...is the quarter „Frankenberger Viertel“.
I have been living here for more than eight years and I still find myself walking through the streets with my eyes wandering up the wonderful facades of the Frankenberg old town houses. I would really like to see one or the other town villa from inside. Summer is the most beautiful season in the Frankenber-ger Viertel, when everybody sits in front of a café or in the park to enjoy the sun.
Claire, team marketing & communication
...is the town hill „Lousberg“.
Only the way there, over the Veltmanplatz, along the memorial, walking the Kupfer-straße and then up the Belvedere Alley is an experience; in only a few minutes from town into a green area. On top of the Lousberg you can always discover new paths, find places that you have never seen before. Beautifully designed flower beds show the importance of this place for Aachen citizens. Walking uphill is rewarded with a fabulous view of Aachen from high up. Again and again an experience!

Shoppingin Aachen
A useful inner-city map with information on the pedestrian zones is found in the envelope.
Note
Shopping in front of historic scenery with pic-turesque facades and narrow alleys, student atmosphere and international flair … this is a special experience, which you would hardly find anywhere else. Aachen, on the one hand, offers department stores as well as small and big shopping malls and, on the other hand, also special, exclusive, partly owner-run bou-tiques and shops with their very own style. In Aachen the symbiosis of experiencing and enjoying is well noticeable. Between shopping and strolling around you should have a break in one of the beautiful cafés or bistros that invite you to linger and quickly let you forget about your original plans for your shopping day in Aachen. Shopping in Aachen – everything included!
Opening hours:
The shops are mainly open from Mon – Sat from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. (the exact opening hours of individual shops may vary).
Open Sundays 2019:

Vennbahn
The Vennbahn belongs to the longest rail trail cycling tracks in Europe. While the track was formerly mainly used for the transport of coal and iron ore for more than 100 years, today cyclists pass the three countries Germany, Belgium and Luxembourg. The track is mainly asphalted and accompanied by nature, bor-derland flair and Vennbahn history. It can also easily be managed by untrained sportspersons and families.
Hiking in the ‘Aachener Wald‘
A junction point system marks walking and hiking tours around Aachen. Numbered junc-tion points at 90 locations make planning of hiking tours easier for walkers and hikers and facilitate orientation in the ‘Aachener Wald‘. Of the about 220 kilometres hiking track network in the ‘Aachener Wald‘ 80 kilometres have currently been marked with junction point numbers.

Eifelsteig
True to the motto: ‘where rock and water accompany you‘ the Eifelsteig is characterised by a varied, close-to-nature route with a high percentage of natural paths, magnificent views and a great number of formation ch-anges: From the highland moors of the Hohe Venn and beech hedges of the Monschau countryside, which are partly as high as the houses, through the national park Eifel with rock passage ways to especially impressive volcanic lakes near Daun and through the south of the Eifel to the destination Trier.
GrenzRouten
On the GrenzRouten you can explore the landscape, culture and history of the three-country region Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands. The routes lead through the wide hedged landscape of East Belgium, along rows of gnarled beech trees at the his-toric Landgraben of the Aachen Empire to the Limburg Heuvelland. The 6 to 19 km long loop trails additionally offer theme tours through the three countries and their common border country history.
Grünmetropole
Nature pure, interesting sights, places of historical interest and cultural variety. The Grünmetropole is worth a visit! The region Aachen-Düren-Heinsberg offers the visitor exciting adventure possibilities and contrasts within a small area. Abandoned areas characterized by industry, extensive heath landscapes and river valleys are waiting for you to be discovered.
The Inderoute is perfectly suited for starting the Eifelsteig hiking tour!

Spa & Reha in Aachen
Spa & Reha
The pedestrian zone with its small shops and their varied offer around the market square of Burtscheid, the weekly market as well as cafés and restaurants offer many possibilities to stay and linger. The Burtscheid spa gardens invite you for walks or simply relax under old trees. Right at the Burtscheid market square there are also the handicapped accessible guest facilities of the spa administration “Haus des Gastes”.
Already in early times the Romans in the former “Porcetum” discovered hot springs and used them for alleviation of diseases. Today the spa and rehabilitation facilities are mainly located in Burtscheid. Therefore, Aachen is permitted to call itself “Bad Aachen”.

Today the bathing tradition in the mineral thermal water of the medicinal springs is being continued in a modern form in the Carolus Thermen Bad Aachen. More information under www-carolus-thermen.de

Arrival &mobility
Arrival & mobilityEnviromental Zone Aachen
As of February 2016, Aachen has an Enviro-mental Zone. For the most part, the boundary of the Enviromental Zone follows Aachen’s outer ring road. In order to be able to drive your vehicle into Aachen’s city centre, you now need a so-called ‘Green Sticker’.
Outside the Enviromental Zone there are in total four park-&-ride areas from where you can catch a bus into the city centre on a regular basis.
· Jülicher Straße/Berliner Ring · Tivoli-Parkhaus (Krefelder Straße)· Waldfriedhof (Monschauer Straße)· Westfriedhof (Vaalser Straße)
