Are you SMARTER than a fifth

grader?Anyone can stack blocks, boxes, orbooks but only those with a steady

hand and little understanding of chemistry and properties of water, canstack liquids.

W hat if you could stack NIN E differentliquids into nine different layers? Couldyou? Think of it as a science MY STERY B URRITO!

DISCUSS why the experiment works. Studentsshould understand that the least dense liquidis the one that stays on top.ASKstudents what would have happened if they had poured the liquids into the jar in adifferent order.HAVEstudents give other examples of Density

Emergency ResponseThe Department played a key role in the Obama administration sresponse to the B P oil spill, the largest spill in our nation s history,

leading the federal government s efforts to leverage resources fromacross the country and around the world to mitigate the impact of theoil on the environment, the economy and public health. This includeddeploying

    more than 48,000 personnel,

6,500 vessels, 3.8 million feet of hard boom, 1.8 million gallons of dispersant, and various techniques, such as controlled burning, skimming and

    containment efforts.

LIQUID DEN SITY AN D OILSPILL

Students are probably aware that oil and water form separate layers

when mixed together, but they may not have thought of this fact interms of density . They will conduct a simple experimentdemonstrating the variable densities of corn syrup, water, glycerin, and vegetable oil. Students will then transfer this concept to anexamination of cleanup methods used in the Exxon Valdez oil spill. They will conclude by writing paragraphs hypothesizing what wouldhappen during an oil spill if oil and water were the same densityand therefore mixed together easily.
