What a fantastic effort by our primary Science and Engineering Challenge team. Blake Cameron, Ariana Wakely, Taleah Van Kemenade, Skye Saunderson, Christopher Taylor and Ruben Hudson combined well and worked together to be the champion school at the Science and Engineering Challenge held last Wednesday. The students reported that they were challenged to: make a catapult, build a bridge for a small train, construct a tower that could withstand a weight and earthquake and design and make an aeroplane that could fly and reach a target. Points were awarded for models being heavier, lighter and the correct height. Our team won the day and were presented with a wonderful glass trophy that is dis‐played in our office foyer. Our Year 10 students participated in the secondary Science and Engineering Challenge on Friday and were placed second in the schools competition.

24th April. ANZAC Day is the next day (25th April). Students (full school uniform) and parents assemble at 10:30 am near the en‐trance of the school ready for the ANZAC Day march. Some teachers and I will meet the students. The march will start at 11:00 am and the service will be held at the Ye‐oval Memorial Hall. Parents are asked to collect their child after the service. The Yeoval Show is to be held on Tuesday, 8th May. This is a pupil free day for stu‐dents to attend the show. The school will have an exhibition at the show. Students on a level card or who have been suspended do not have the privilege of go‐ing on school excursions or being involved in school events and activities. Some stu‐dents seem surprised when they are with‐drawn from activities because of their be‐haviour. Students who do not comply with the school rules, show disrespect to teach‐ers and want to bully other students will not participate in school events and activi‐ties. To represent the school is a privilege and not a right. Please talk to your Principal if there are concerns about our welfare program. For the safety and health of all students in our school, parents are asked to please check their child’s hair for head lice before returning to school in Term 2. Need a good book to read? Visit the Book Connection in Macquarie Street, Dubbo. The store has sponsored the Principal’s Reading Challenge in our school with a generous donation of books. This week I mailed 11 Good News letters to parents. Congratulations to the stu‐dents for their achievements in class.

Mackenzie Tremain and Lachlan Blatch enjoyed the experience of visiting Sydney and participating at Young Leaders Day. They met a number of students from other schools and listened to a selection of keynote speakers. Mrs Jo Blatch has a wonderful collection of photos of the trip.

School photos will be taken on Tuesday 1st May (Week 2). Students are expected to be in full school winter uniform. The uniform was advertised in last week’s newsletter. I request that all parents check that their child has the correct uni‐form in readiness for school photos. Ap‐pointments can be made for the uniform shop to be open at times that suit par‐ents and the ladies who assist. Please phone the following numbers: Michele Kerin 68464519 or Gaela Elliott 68464560. Our primary girls netball team, managed by Mrs Sargent, “Wildcats”, played Dubbo West Public School in the NSW PSSA Knockout competition on Friday. Mrs Debbie Blatch coached our team and the girls played well. They may have lost the game but enjoyed the experience of playing against another school and being selected in a school team. The team: Sha‐nai Bulter, Mackenzie Tremain, Bridget Smith, Taleah Van Kemenade, Ariana Wakely, Sydney Tremain, Boudicea Blatch and Skye Saunderson. The boys play the NSWPSSA Soccer Knock out competition in Term 2. Students and parents are invited to march with the school on ANZAC Day. Students return to school on Tuesday

WORLD OF MATHS

On the 9th March Years 5,6,7,8 and 9 travelled to Peak Hill to participate in the World of Maths day. Upon arrival our students were joined with Peak Hill students and were given a talk on the importance and relevance of maths in everyday life. The presenter then talked about some of the challenges they would be faced with in the puzzles. The puzzles were set up around the room and the students worked in groups of 4 to solve them. All were hands on puzzles and the students were to use problem solving strategies to find the solutions. Some of the strategies they used were trial and error, number patterns, modelling, listing and using dia‐grams. The students had a terrific time trying to solve the problems. They were engaged all of the time and found the experience very invigorating. It was exciting for Mrs Deb Blatch and I to see our students actively participate in the problem solving activities. Some of the comments from the students were: “this is good fun, I like doing this sort of maths, maths should be like this all the time.” Our students were absolutely fantastic in both participation and behaviour. It was a pleasure taking our students to Peak Hill. The teacher from Peak Hill told us how impressed she was with the participation and behaviour of our students.


SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING CHALLENGE On Friday 30th March Year 10 travelled to Dubbo to undertake the Science and Engineering Challenge conducted by Newcastle University with 12 other small schools within the Dubbo district. Yeoval were paired with Dunedoo Central and Yeoval competed in the War Machine and Gold Fever activities. Both these activities involved using engineering and science skills by building a catapult to launch a ten‐nis ball at a target and different distances and also building a bridge to carry weights over a small span. Both activities were keenly contested by the students and impressive scores were allocated to the Ye‐oval students. Dunedoo also impressed the judges in their activities gaining good scores throughout the day. Yeoval and Dunedoo gained an impressive 2nd place going down to Gulgong who achieved 1st place with consistent scores on the day.

PRIMARY ASSEMBLY There will be no primary assembly this week due to Friday being Good Friday.

LAWN BOWLS Congratulations to our lawn bowls team that com‐peted in the Western Area triples. We played the winners from last year Parkes in the first round. We lost 11 – 6. We then played Forbes in the sec‐ond round and lost 29 – 3. In our last game we took on Tullamore and won the game 14 – 3. The boys played really well and will get another oppor‐

tunity later in the year when Yeoval host the Tom Kemp shield for U/16 bowlers. The team consisted of Matthew Wykes, Grant Iles and Josh Lees.

BEEF SPECTACULAR During Week 8 students from Years 9 and 10 Agri‐culture attended Beef Spectacular in Dubbo. They were assisted by Year 11 Primary Industries and Agriculture students, Alicia McConnell and Stephannie Mobbs. It was a valuable learning experience which in‐volved the leading and parading of cattle and the judging of cattle for desirable traits. The student discussions in groups about quality beef cattle characteristics were of very high quality and demonstrated a firm grasp of the subject. The next activity involved students developing a business plan. Each student received $13,000 ficti‐tious dollars to spend in implementing their own business ideas. This task required students to talk to rural traders and stud cattle operators to en‐quire about prices of items that they could use to develop their enterprise. The winning business concept was presented by Joshua Lees and involved the development of a beef cattle enterprise using Hereford heifers and a Charolaises Bull purchased at Beef Spectacular. Anaru Poihakena‐Jackson was highly commended for his plan to create a fencing contacting business by buying a chainsaw, generator, a second hand ute and fencing materials. Students enjoyed the whole experience including the opportunity to sleep under the stars and gain valuable insights into the beef industry.
