THE ENNEAGRAM IS PRIMARILY AN INSTRUMENT FOR SELF-KNOWLEDGE ANDPERSONAL TRANSFORMATIONKeeping a conscious focus on our motives and behavior helps avoid the common pitfalls of ourtype. Self-knowledge involves constant inquiry into own agendas and defenses, andtransformation requires the courage to act against the structures and habits of our personality.

WE CAN BE A SOURCE OF HELP FOR ONE ANOTHERThe Enneagram invites us to wake up from habit and recurring defensive patterns. In that sense we eachserve to remind others of the differences among us and of the integrity of different points of view.Doctrine and theory are far less important than keeping the conversation open.

ALLOW OTHERS TO DISCOVER THEMSELVESThe Enneagram has profound effects on people. It is most effective when we allow others to discovertheir type, rather than assuming that we know them better than they know themselves. Be sensitiveto their reactions, their changing picture of themselves, and their need to integrate new information.

TYPE DOES NOT FULLY DESCRIBE AN INDIVIDUALThe Enneagram does not tell us about a person’s history or anything meaningful about the qualityof their character, their intelligence or their talents. People are more than their type. This isparticularly important to remember in the workplace.

THE ENNEAGRAM IS AN IMPORTANT TOOL FOR COMPASSIONIn seeing the intentions and logic of other types, it becomes less likely that we will dismiss, judgeor demean each other. Listen closely to individual stories; we do not know each other simply becausewe know each other’s type. Stereotyping indicates closed-mindedness, an assumption that wealready know about a person’s attitude and motivations. Stereotyping arises largely because of pastnegative encounters with someone of the same type; it limits growth and opportunities in thepresent.

THE ENNEAGRAM IS A WORK IN PROGRESSMany have contributed to it, and many will do so in the future, therefore, be explicit aboutgiving attribution to the work of others. Name your sources and honor the originality and hard workof other contributors. Take it upon yourself to maintain standards of scholarship, thus promotinga collegial atmosphere in the sharing of information.

NO INDIVIDUAL OWNS THE ENNEAGRAMThe Enneagram cannot be controlled, monopolized or withheld from public discussion. Restrictingthe right to communicate, develop and share information about the system is contrary to theEnneagram’s liberating and empowering spirit.

THE SYSTEM ENCOURAGES US “TO WALK THE WALK” OF TRANSFORMATIONThe Enneagram encourages us to embody the work of transformation ourselves, to stand as livingexamples of self-inquiry and practical change in the service of spiritual liberation.

PRESIDENT’S WELCOME

On behalf of the IEA Board of Directors, welcome to the 10th International EnneagramAssociation Conference.

The International Enneagram Association, conceived ten years ago during the 1stInternational Enneagram Conference at Stanford University, was the product of a collectivevision, one that sensed the potential power of the Enneagram to raise individual, community, and global consciousness. We are all indebted to our Founders for their foresight and forbearancein creating an association that could span individuals, geographies, and Enneagram schools.

Our Founders – Maria Beesing, David Daniels, Theodorre Donson, Andreas Ebert,Russ Hudson, Kathy Hurley, Patrick O’Leary, Helen Palmer, and Don Riso – have all madeimportant contributions to the IEA over the years. Now, on our tenth anniversary, it isespecially important to acknowledge that the first conference would have never taken place wereit not for the work and dedication of David Daniels, who willingly parlayed his relationshipsand stature at Stanford University to help create a global Enneagram community.

This year, a special thank you to Bea Chesnut, the IEA 2004 Conference Chair, forher willingness to provide clear leadership and to hold firm on quality, and to her committee- Andrea Isaacs, Francoise Chesaux, Judith Searle, and Sandy Perry - for the hundreds ofhours of time and unseen work that they have also contributed to this conference.

In addition, we deeply appreciate the presence and grace of Claudio Naranjo and theadditional teachers he has brought with him to work with us during the morning sessions ofthe conference. All the presenters at this conference, including Claudio and his colleagues, do soon a volunteer basis, and we extend our heartfelt thanks to all of them.

May each of us be receptive to the opportunities at the conference for increasing ourcapacity and consciousness through the Enneagram and for meeting interesting people from allover the world!

WELCOME MESSAGE FROM THE2004 IEA CONFERENCE CHAIR

Welcome to the 2004 International Enneagram Association Conference! Thank you for travellingto Washington DC for the IEA’s annual community-wide event. The committee and I haveendeavored to make this a fun and worthwhile event for everyone, from the stimulating program,to entertaining social time, to information and resources that are readily available.

We’re very excited to have Matthew Fox, well-known spiritual visionary and theologian, here togive our keynote address, and we’re also thrilled to have Claudio Naranjo offering a specialworkshop on Enneagram Sub-types.

In addition to assembling a diverse array of high-quality U.S.-based work, this year we made aspecial effort to include more international presenters, to provide more of a sense of theEnneagram-related work that happens around the globe. This was inspired by the IEA Board’scontinuing effort to make the IEA more truly international.

With so many great presentations going on at the same time, it may be difficult to decide whatsessions to attend. To provide some relief for this dilemma, for the second year in a row, we haveassembled a Conference Proceedings book with samples of most all of the presentations. You mayfind it for sale at the registration desk.

At this, the tenth anniversary of IEA conferences, I’m especially grateful that we have six of theoriginal nine founders of the IEA here with us. Each of the founders present will share their latestwork, and, in a special closing event, we will formally pay tribute to the contributions each ofthese people made in establishing the IEA.

Finally, I’d like to thank Ginger Lapid-Bogda, the IEA’s president, the IEA board of directors, ourconference volunteers, and a local Enneagram group in Washington DC, Enneagram Studies of theGreater Washington Area, which helped our committee of California and New York and Ohioresidents make arrangements here in the conference city.

I hope you have a great conference, and I hope you will make an effort to give us feedback aboutthe conference, good and bad, through the conference evaluations (for both individual sessions andthe conference as a whole) so that we may continue to learn how best to serve the Enneagramcommunity through this one-of-a-kind annual IEA event.

CLAUDIO NARANJO, M.D.

Exploration of Sub-TypesDay One: Dr. Naranjo will introduce theneurotic needs essential to each of the 27subtypes. Each one is driven by a certain thirst, excess, or passion. These neurotic needs aredifferent than the nine primary passions (such asfear, lust, envy), and can be called satellitepassions. Through a guided process, participantswill identify their subtypes or find themselvesuncertain about their type. Those clear with theirsubtype will form in groups accordingly. Anadditional 10th group will be formed with thoseparticipants who are unclear about their type.

Claudio Naranjo studied medicine, music, andphilosophy in Chile, where he also was a resident at theUniversity of Chile Psychiatric Clinic. After coming

to live in the United States, Dr. Naranjo was on staffearly on at the Esalen Institute, where he became one ofthe three successors to Fritz Perls. Later his life'spilgrimage brought him in contact with various spiritualmasters. He was also Research Associate at the Institutefor Personality Assessment and Research on the BerkeleyCampus and associate of Raymond Cattell at theInstitute of Personality and Ability Testing. He hastaught comparative religion, humanistic psychology, andmeditation, and he was the founder of SAT Institute, anintegrative psycho-spiritual school. He is considered oneof the pioneers of the Human Potential Movement, andhis introduction of "Fourth Way" ideas to psychotherapyis an instance of his work as an integrator at the interfacebetween psychotherapy and spiritual traditions. Atpresent he is primarily dedicated to an integrative andtranspersonal education of psychotherapists in variousEuropean and South American countries.

For over 20years they have focused their attention on spiritualheart practices in their family and in their professionalprograms. They enjoy learning about life from theirgrandsons.

TINA THOMAS

The Enneagram as a Unifying Paradigm ofPersonality Psychology In the field ofpersonality psychology there are currently six mainapproaches (Trait, Biological, Psychoanalytical,Behavioral, Cognitive and Humanistic) thatattempt to explain personality from differingperspectives. Some of these systems arecompatible while others seem irreconcilablypolar. Perhaps what is missing is a unifyingparadigm that is large enough and elegantenough to make sense of all approaches. Dr.Thomas discusses how the Enneagram mightserve as a framework that unites the six currentapproaches of personality psychology. This couldlead to a richer understanding of personalitypsychology and the Enneagram for both personalgrowth and improved clinical intervention.

Tina Thomas holds a Ph.D. in biopsychology andis an RN and social worker. Author of “A GentlePath - A Guide to Peace, Passion, and Power,” andfounder of the “The United Foundation for Research inPersonality,” she has dedicated her life to researchingthe biological nature of personality.

FRIDAY EARLY AFTERNOON SESSION(2:30 -- 4:00 PM)

FABIEN and PATRICIA CHABREUIL(France)

The Enneagram and Spiral Dynamics:Enneatype, Values, Society, and CultureSpiral Dynamics describes the dynamic of change

in individuals and societies according to theevolution of the conditions of life. SpiralDynamics is an open-ended model mappinglevels of values and how these levels linktogether. Each enneatype can access each level ofthe Spiral, but we can be trapped in one levelaccording to our profile. So, knowing the twosystems can give a better understanding of ourcapacities of adaptation to societies andcorporations. Spiral Dynamics can also be usedto make the descriptions of the enneatypes moreindependent of our culture and easier tounderstand and accept by people living in verydifferent cultures.

Fabien and Patricia Chabreuil introduced theEnneagram in France in 1993 and published the firstFrench book on the subject. They have conductedintensive research on the psychological and spiritualaspects of the Enneagram that resulted in severalgroundbreaking articles published in the EnneagramMonthly. Fabien and Patricia work with individualsand public or private organizations, as trainers andconsultants.

Sleep Talk and the Enneagram Sleep Talk withEnneagram knowledge is a powerful tool inbuilding an effective bridge between parents andchildren. It helps children deal with variousage-specific issues, allowing parents andgrandparents to help children through difficulttimes. Sleep talk scripts affirm positive behaviorwhile a child sleeps. This practice is mutuallybeneficial for parents and children. For adults, itprovides a chance to release negativity andreinforce love and pride for the child. Forchildren, it is a low-stress way to assist inmodifying behavior and strengthening positivepersonality traits. Enjoy your parentingexperience. It lasts a lifetime.

Lois Y. Haddad, R.N., developed the Sleep Talktechnique as she cared for critically ill children on thepediatric ward of UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles,California. She has taught relaxation, stressmanagement, visualization, and healing workshops inschools, companies, and medical clinics for over twentyyears. (714) 545-2892. [email protected]

A Taste of Silence: Transformation ThroughCentering Prayer In this session we willconsider transformation as the intimaterefashioning of our being -- the transformation ofour pain, wounded ness, and unconsciousnessinto the person God intended us to be. We willconsider the transformation process asaccomplished not by an act of our will, butrather, as a journey to find our true self, ourEssential Being, through a contemplative processof Centering Prayer. We will review the historyof the centuries-old Christian tradition ofContemplative prayer and the simple practice ofCentering Prayer, which leads us beyond mind, words, and ideas to the place where God can get in.

Pat Henfling is a certified Enneagram teacher whohas presented the Enneagram from a spiritualperspective for the past 10 years. This is applied tolearning the Enneagram’s range of coping styles. After a meditation to calm and focus the mindinward, we apply this method to understand andexpress our feelings, which loosens the grip theyhave over us. For anyone whose life has beentouched by cancer.

Transforming Organizations with theEnneagram: Linking Personal, Small Group, and Institutional Work An individual coachingprogram for senior executives would be moreeffective if it included group work with his/herteam. Likewise, an in-company workshop wouldwork better as part of a more complete culturaltransformation of the whole organization. Inother words, personal, small group, andinstitutional work with the Enneagram can beintegrated in change management programscapable of solving all dimensions of a givenproblem. This session will explore new andmultiple formats and methodologies for this.Case studies and real examples will be used toshow how to go beyond the traditionalEnneagram applications in business and how todeliver superior results.

Thinking Styles and Enneagram StylesThinking styles are forms of mental self-government. According to Robert Sternberg thekinds of government we have in the world arenot arbitrary but are mirrors of the mind. Theyreflect different ways in which people canorganize or govern themselves. For example, both minds and governments have variousfunctions (legislative, executive, judicial), forms(monarchic, hierarchic, oligarchic, anarchic),levels (global, local), orientations (external, internal), and leanings (liberal, conservative).Participants will take a brief questionnaire todetermine which thinking styles they favor.Correlations between thinking preferences andEnneagram styles will be explored. Thisworkshop includes input, personal reflection, and group interaction.

Homeopathy and the Enneagram Homoeopathyis part of the field of holistic medicine that sees thehuman being from a global point of view, wherephysical, emotional, social, environmental, psychospiritual and energy aspects are considered. Thebasic premise is that our impulses, our erroneousmental and emotional programming, and thefailure to adapt to external stimuli create analteration in our homeostasis. Knowing thepatient’s basic patterns, his vulnerabilities, thedegree of his inadaptability, and his defensemechanisms helps us find the right remedy. TheEnneagram allows us to situate the individual inview of his basic susceptibilities and to forecastpossible compulsions that may generate differentmorbid dynamics.

Ritual Meditation Involving GurdjieffMovements Physical exercises: No particularability is needed, but the will to be involved isrequired (all attendees have to be active). Theproposed meditation involves GurdjieffMovements in a silent journey through theconsciousness of the body. Following The Cycleof Nourishing from Chinese TraditionalMedicine, blocked energy will be awakened andreleased. The still sleeping energies of internalorgans, of the mind and of the heart are gentlyspurred to flow in every part of the body andfreely circulate. Once this is achieved the three

energy centres (emotional, mental, and visceral)have the possibility to show their power.Through the music of the Gurdjieff dance andthe precision of the movements, this new qualityof energy begins to reveal a different sense of thebody’s form.

Annamaria Squarciapino is a teacher for and amember of the board of directors of the ItalianAssociation of Enneagramma. Nine nativity and depositionscenes from different painters have been chosen, each one of them recalling the characteristicenergy of a specific personality type. Each sceneand its author will be historically and technicallyexplained through the Enneagram perspective.Following the explanation the whole set of slideswill be reviewed in silence as a meditation witha musical background.

Tai Chi. From Ego to Essence: An EnergeticPath Through the Practice of Chi Kung(Qigong) Both the Enneagram and Chi Kunghave mathematical origins, and were originallytaught as a means of understanding how theuniverse works. Both stress the foundationalsignificance of threes, use dynamic diagrams toillustrate predictable directions of flow, andoutline a clear path of spiritual and psychologicalgrowth that is based on relaxation, rather thaneffort. However, what is often lacking inenneagram circles is a physical and energeticpractice that actively engages the body as aprimary agent and arena for change. Chi Kungfills this gap by offering a down-to-earthapproach to transformation through, not in spiteof, the body. Participants will learn how to openand balance the three centers.

Sandy Seeber, M.A., M.A. Ed., is President ofSynergy Clinical & Consulting Services and Co-Founder of Three Treasures Tai Chi Association. Shehas a private counseling & consulting practice in whichshe integrates the Enneagram, energy psychology, healing touch, and chi kung. AMIR GABRIEL CASTRO andDANIEL CASTRO CARVAJAL(Colombia)

Awakening the Inner Voyager in TeenagersThis session will introduce our method of usingthe Enneagram with teenagers. Our “AwakeningWorkshop” addresses teenagers between the agesof 15 to 20, because at this stage a teenagerbegins to separate from his family. It goesfurther than information gathering or a merepersonality description. We try to inculcate inthem the ability to reflect upon their thoughts, ideas, emotions, feelings, attitudes and reactions, awakening at this early age the first state of“awareness.” Through this process they will beable to bring about desired changes in their ownlives, from a perspective of self-knowledge andan evaluation of the environment and themselves.

Amir Gabriel Castro is a philosopher, humanist, and sociologist. He received his Enneagram training in1978 from Chilean psychiatrist Carlos Warter. In1995 he was initiated in Sufism by Sufi master

Nawab Pasnak. He is founder and director ofAmaRenacer, an international organization designedto support Human Development. Daniel CastroCarvajal works as a psychotherapist and is studyingto be a psychoanalyst. Out of the Box: Coaching with the EnneagramThose doing change work may unwittingly helppeople get better at what they’ve always done tokeep themselves stuck in a box. In contrast, significant shifts can occur by moving beyondfirst-order change (doing something betterwithout examining the Enneagram worldview, or"box") to second-order or transformationalchange (stepping "out of the box"). Participantexercises will demonstrate state-of-the artpractices, and coaching cases will illustrate how adeeper understanding of underlying Enneagrampatterns shows exactly where and how to helppeople get unstuck.

Mary Bast has a Ph.D. in social psychology and hasbeen a corporate and personal coach for 25 years. The Secret Structure of Enneagram Styles Allsubjective experience has a sensory structure, an“inner architecture,” and anything we do follows asequence of internal sensory steps – a combinationseeing, hearing, feeling, smelling, and tasting. Each Enneagram style also has specific sensoryqualities that shape our Enneagramatic reactions.Whenever someone behaves in a compulsive, fixated way from within their Enneagram stylethere is both a structure to it and key sensoryqualities that drive the behavior. These subjectiveelements can be identified and altered, sometimesto dramatic effect. Come and learn a newperspective on the Enneagram, one that leads togreater freedom and choice.

Conflict Resolution: Forming an Alliance ofPersonalities An innovative approach to conflictresolution that has proven highly effective inconsulting work with corporations andorganizations. It combines the Harvard LawSchool strategy of Fisher & Ury (Getting To Yes,1991) with insights into the Enneagrampersonality avoidance-defense dynamic describedby Naranjo (Ennea-type Structures, 1990 &Character and Neurosis, 1994). Building onmaterial presented, participants are asked toexperiment in groups of three with the approachof making one’s adversary an ally in mutualproblem-solving and searching creatively formultiple options. The small group dynamicsfeature an objective feedback component thataffirms the importance of understanding one’spersonality style.

Death, Dying, and Type Death is the only certaintyin life. Despite this, the topic is generally avoidedbecause it causes uneasiness, fear and pain. Sooner orlater, everyone will be faced with the challenge ofhaving to accompany a loved one through dying andcertainly one’s own death. The challenge is toreconcile oneself with vulnerability and mortalityand to prepare for this ultimate event. Differentfactors may influence the way one approaches deathand dying, including the prevailing cultural climate. Our historical time is characterized by an hedonisticatmosphere, an excessive trust in technology andmedical advancement, and the denial of death or itsinstitutionalization, all of which dehumanize dying.

Arnaldo Pangrazzi is professor at The InternationalInstitute for the Theology of Pastoral Health Care(Camillianum) in Rome, Italy. He is the author of anumber of books dealing with death and dying, grief, pastoral care of the sick, the enneagram. He is thePresident of AIE (Associazione Italiana diEnneagramma) and has developed a number ofadvanced courses of the enneagram, which he hastaught in a variety of countries: Italy, Spain, Chile,Brazil, Colombia, Peru, Korea, and Uganda.

Relating from Essence Given the fact that typehas a biased point of view designed to protect us,it’s not surprising that faced with another humanbeing – however well intentioned - type reacts inautomatic (fortunately for the purpose of growth)predictable ways. Unfortunately this is true evenwhen we hope and long for intimacy. Themoments when our barriers drop and we comebeing to being with another are rare andunforgettable. In that moment, love is known. It may even be a moment shared with a stranger;still, we recognize it and long for more of thatquality of relatedness. This experientialworkshop explores why we don’t, and how wecan start to, relate more and more from Essence.Come prepared to do so.

Karen Webb, graduate of the EPTP with HelenPalmer®, has taught the Enneagram since 1992. Alifelong student of psychology and comparative religion, herwork prior to this was in Management consultancy,

Ritual Meditation Involving GurdjieffMovements Physical exercises: No particularability is needed, but the will to be involved isrequired (all attendees have to be active). Themeditation involves Gurdjieff Movements in asilent journey through the consciousness of thebody. Following The Cycle of Nourishing fromChinese Traditional Medicine, blocked energywill be awakened and released. The still sleepingenergies of internal organs, of the mind and heartare gently spurred to flow in every part of thebody and freely circulate. Once this is achievedthe three energy centers (emotional, mental, andvisceral) have the possibility to show their power.Through the music of the Gurdjieff dance andthe precision of the movements, this new qualityof energy begins to reveal a different sense of thebody’s form. Repetition gives rise to a ritualdance of meditation. A different geometry, a newwhole that can be realized only through thesynergy of the group.
