Most children love taking a tray up to their mum. You can keep it sim- ple with cereal and/or toast and fruit juice, or go continental with croissants and pastries. Or cook something (although younger child- ren will need supervision in the kitchen) such as boiled eggs with soldiers or even scrambled eggs and smoked salmon. Consider the presentation too. Put a vase of flowers on the tray along with your Mother’s Day cards. WHAT CAN YOU DO FOR YOUR MUM ON MOTHER’S DAY? There are so many ways to make Mother’s Day a day to remember. So what will you decide on? Much will depend on distances, finances, logistics and of course the weath- er! We’ve put together a few ideas that might work for you. GO OUT TO EAT Mother’s Day is a popular occa- sion to go out to eat, be it break- fast, lunch or dinner. It also tends to be really busy so do book in advance, especially if there is a par- ticular table you would like. Most pubs and restaurants have been busy planning the event for ages and will be offering a special Mother’s Day menu with perhaps a number of courses at a set price. At some places, Mums get to eat free. Why not make it a multi-genera- tional occasion and take grannies and great-grannies along also? Add to the occasion by dressing up a bit and taking some photos or a video so that you can look back on the day and smile. COOK AT HOME Going out to eat might not be the best option for your family. It could be due to finances or health issues, or you might have small children or new babies and prefer to stay at home. And that’s fine. Cook something at home instead. Invite your mum to your home or if you are still liv- ing at the family home, ban her from the kitchen while you rustle up something delicious – but do make sure you do all the clearing away and cleaning up afterwards! WHAT TO DO ON MOTHER’S DAY Mothering Sunday March 26th Mother’s Day comes just once a year. It’s one of those big deal occasions so do give some thought to how you can make it special. If you are an only child then the planning will all be down to you. If you have brothers or sisters then get together and see what ideas you can come up with, then all play a part in making it happen. Create some special memories. Perhaps your mum has dropped a few hints, or you know there is something she has always wanted to experience, a place she is longing to visit or a restaurant she would love to try. TREAT HER TO AFTERNOON TEAAfternoon tea with those lovely lit-

tle sandwiches, scones and fresh cream and delicious cakes is a treat - and always seems so civilised. Mother’s Day is the perfect occasion to indulge and there are so many lovely places locally to try. If she real-ly loves her cuppa she might enjoy

trying some of the special blends that are often available.

Whatever your mum would prefer; an old fashioned type of tearoom, somewhere modern or a grand set-ting in a castle or stately home, you can be sure to find the perfect spot.

GO OUT FOR A WALK

Getting out in the fresh air will depend on the weather. However we can have some lovely spring days in March so it’s possible to plan a nice walk. Dress in something sensible, comfortable and waterproof. Plan a route, you might be lucky enough to find glades of wild daffodils or spring

flowers that will make you feel excit-ed that winter is really over. Perhaps take a picnic and call into a pub or tea-room en-route (booking in advance might be a good idea).

It also might be wise to have a back-up plan, just in case the weath-er does go pear-shaped!

GO SHOPPING - SOME RETAIL

THERAPY

For mothers and daughters, going shopping together is something they love to do. To be clear, we are not talking shopping for groceries here but looking for a new dress, shoes or make-up. And, if you really can’t think of what to get her for a present, you can let her choose her own Mother’s Day gift while you are out.

WAIT ON HERThere’s no rule that says you have

to go anywhere on Mother’s Day. You can stay at home and have a relaxing day, perhaps play board-games, watch a DVD or catch up on t h a t b o x - s e t y o u ’ v e b e e n meaning to see.

Mothers and daughters might enjoy a girlie day with beauty treat-ments such as face-masks and give each other a manicure and/or pedicure.

Just make sure your mum takes it easy. Wait on her for a change and make her Mother’s Day special.

BAKE HER A CAKETelevision cookery shows, espe-

cially Bake-Off, have made baking cakes really fashionable and trendy. Have a look through your cookery books and choose a recipe with all her favourite ingredients and fla-vours. You might want to practise in

advance to be confident that it will turn out well on the day. While pres-entation is important - and you will want to spend time on the decora-tion - the taste is the main thing – however the thought behind it will be all that matters to your mum.
