It’s a simple thing to do on paper, but living into the New Year is often easier said than done. I’m relatively certain that at some point I’m going to write 2015 rather than 2016 as I process a check. Another element of living into the New Year has to do with our approach. In many ways, the New Year is like a blank slate filled with beginnings, possibilities, and great hope. I recently took the Strength Finders assessment and was reminded again of my number one strength, which is Futuristic. It is defined in this way: “People exceptionally talented in the futuristic theme are inspired by the future and what could be. They energize others with their visions of the future. People with strong futuristic talents love to peer over the horizon. They are fascinated by the future. They anticipate and imagine in detail what tomorrow could or should be. They usually see the future positively.” I see this transitional time period as a gift. It as an opportunity that brings together a countless number of data points for us to consider. For myself, I reflect on the past year by remembering the mountain top moments, as well as periods of uncertainty, darkness and grief. I review and celebrate accomplishments, and at the same time, acknowledge shortcomings and failures. Then, I begin to “peer over the horizon.” I do love the way that sounds. Together as the community of faith, the Body of Christ we know as the St. Andrew United Methodist Church, we are making a difference in the world. We further the Kingdom of God as we share the Good News of Jesus Christ. It’s the constant coming in, and going out that propels us forward into each new moment and every new day. We come in to Connect with God and others through worship and fellowship. Then we Grow via Sunday School, small groups, retreats, and other special times. And finally we go out and Serve in our mission and outreach ministries. When we are finished with one cycle, we begin anew. Each opportunity to Connect, Grow, and Serve frames a new time for us. We discover new beginnings, possibilities, and great hope as we peer over the horizon. As your Pastor and spiritual leader, I am issuing a call to a season of prayer as we make the transition from 2015 to 2016. May our prayers center on discerning and discovering God’s will for the church, and for God’s blessing upon us. May God vastly multiply our impact on many lives. I leave you now with Paul’s words to the Philippians, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” Philippians 4:13 (NKJV) In Ministry With You, Pastor John

words from Pastor John

A Season of Prayer We’re quickly coming up on that calendar moment where we will transition from 2015 to 2016.

They usually see the future positively.”

I see this transitional time period as a gift.

New Book in Library:

Rewilding our Hearts

By Marc Bekoff Review by Jane Henry

I recently finished Rewilding our Hearts; Building Pathways of Compassion and Coexis-tence. It was a wonderful read which I strongly recommend to you. Bekoff has a deep love and appreciation for all of the non-human creatures that share our glorious planet. They are sentient beings that often experience emotions,

joys, and sorrows. He sees the process of rewild-ing as a personal journey and transformative exploration that centers on bringing other ani-mals and their homes, all ecosystems, back into our heart. In spite of the mess we have made of things, Bekoff writes in a hopeful and joyful spirit. It is a beautifully written book, deeply philosophical with a powerful and uplifting mes-sage. Also it is one that can be counted (as one of five books read in a year’s time) for the UMW read-ing program. If you are not familiar with the program, pickup a brochure in our library.

Martha's Closet Jerry Sedlacek The new year doesn't change the need for food for those still struggling in today's economy. We'll resume collecting food in January for the Wesley Center to serve those in need. The red wagon will be placed in the Atrium on Sunday, 1/3, as a reminder of our food collection on Sunday, 1/10. Please support this St. Andrew out-reach program by bringing food items that you can spare with emphasis on the lists below: Food Items Canned goods (meat, fruit, vegetables, & soup) Cereal Cooking oil Crackers Flour Fresh fruit and vegetables Jelly Noodles Peanut butter Pork & beans Spaghetti Spaghetti sauce Wesley also has refrigeration for chicken, fresh meat, and eggs and a freezer for fro-zen items. Additional Items (items that food stamps can't buy) Bathroom tissue Bleach (30 oz.) Dishwashing liquid Disposable diapers Face soap Deodorant Laundry detergent (30 oz.) Paper towels Toothpaste & brushes

St. Andrew STARS will begin the new year with a gathering at Neidhart’s Park Hills club-house on Wed. January 20th at 11:00. It will be a potluck lunch and Dave and Kathy

Engwall will give a presentation about Beavercreek FISH. We will then have an afternoon of game play-ing. Bring your favorite game if you wish. Sign up on the event sheet on the STARS bul-letin board, outside of the Gathering Grounds, and indicate what food item you will bring to share. You are also encouraged to bring canned goods which will be given to Beavercreek FISH for their local distribution. As a recap of our December outing: 28 peo-ple traveled to Westerville to attend the Living Christmas Tree program, followed by a dinner at Der Dutchman Inn.

Happy New Year! As 2016 opens up with all of its potential, we have a wonderful opportunity to join in fellowship with New Hope UMC (536 Xenia Ave., Dayton) through dinner and wor-ship on Sunday, 31 January 2016! We will carpool from St Andrew UMC at 4:15pm. The worship service is at 5:00pm and the dinner is at 6:00pm. How can you participate?! There are several ways! First: You can pray for New Hope UMC and its

congregation and for the St Andrew UMC mem-bers who will serve.

Second: You can donate to the dinner menu

items either through delivery of the food items by noon on 31 January or through a cash dona-tion. There will be sign-up sheets in the atrium highlighting the pulled pork dinner menu and the needed ingredients and their quantities.

Third: You can come along and help serve the

dinner - there are normally 100 individuals and families who are served and we will need St. Andrew UMC volunteers to help serve the meals.

Fourth: You can come along and join in the New Hope UMC worship service and get to know the folks at New Hope in a more personal way.

Fifth: You can donate items to the New Hope UMC "free store". The "free store" was estab-lished so that neighborhood people could trade items that can be purchased with food stamps for items that can’t be purchased with food stamps. The items that are needed in-clude: laundry detergent, soap, cleaning prod-ucts, paper towels, toilet paper, aftershave, acne products, baby lotion, baby wipes, body wash for men & women, cleaners (Mr. Clean, Ajax, etc.), denture creams & paste, deodorant, detergents, dish soap, diapers, lotions, sanitary pads, shampoo, conditioners, hair brushes, combs, shaving cream, razors, soap, toilet pa-per, toothpaste & toothbrushes. Please start collecting these items and drop them in the box that is located in the church atrium throughout January. Final collection date will be noon on Sunday, 31 January.

If you have any questions, please contact Lynn Moad at [email protected] or (937) 554-9301.

Welcome to New Hope Church!“Restoring Hope one life at a time”

A New Year and A New Opportunity!

Human Relations Day is January 17, 2016 Human Relations Day is one of the six United Methodist Church Special Sundays with offer-ings. The church-wide Special Sunday calls United Methodists to recognize the right of all God’s children in realizing their potential as human beings in relationship with one an-other. The special offering benefits neighborhood ministries through Community Developers, community advocacy through United Methodist Voluntary Services and work with at-risk teens through the Youth Offender Rehabilitation Program. Turn on the news or drive around the out-skirts of your town and you will find what Jesus called “the least of these.” Over and over Jesus served people living in the mar-gins of society, struggling to survive, embrac-ing them. And that’s what we want to model

as the people of The United Methodist Church. To continue the ministry of Jesus, we established Human Relations Day as a Spe-cial Sunday that calls all of our churches to par-ticipate in helping all God’s children to real-ize their potential.

When you give generously on Human Rela-tions Day, you encourage ordinary people to have a voice in changing the world. Please consider giving, Amy Schalle Deuteronomy 15:11 For there will never cease to be poor in the land. Therefore I com-mand you, ‘You shall open wide your hand to your brother, to the needy and to the poor, in your land.’
