We are t he first fraterni t y to be foundedon servi ce to ot he rs, the first fraternity toco ndemn hazin g and mean it, the firstfrater n ity to admit students of all races andcreeds, t he first fraternity to open its doorsto wome n, a nd the first and o nly fraremi­tv to be built on the principles of sco ut ing.Many of th ese cho ices took foresight andco urage. Some of them were not popularat the time wit h other student organiza­tions. A few of them were preceded bymuch discussion. But all of them toget herde fin ed and shaped the unique andmag nificent organization we know todayas Al pha Phi Omega.

Todav's Al ph a Phi O mega must continueto make informed and wise choices, not to

seek change merely for its own sake or inrespo nse to fleeting fancies, but rather toapp ly our foundi ng principles to todav's op­port uni tie s and challenges so that ourFraternity is even more viable and relevantto tomorrow's college stu dents than it is to

todav's.What are some of the challenges th at will

provoke these cho ices! First, now th at mo reand more co lleges and universities arc pro­meting volunteerism among their students,A lpha Phi Omega's ro le o n cam pus mustbe better defined to firml y establi sh it asthe prem iere collegiate service organization.

Second, at a time when the media, thepublic and, indeed , our host academ ic in ­st itu tions are questioni ng the need for andmissio n of traditiona l fraternities andso ro rities on campus , we mu st clearl ydemonstrate tha t A lpha Phi Omega alwayshas been and always will be unique as theleader and innovator of tru e ser vice toothers and the genuine worth of hu mandignity.
