News & Notes A Publication of The Children's Home, Inc. Winter-Spring 2018 The 5K Walk for Youth is intentionally scheduled for a beautiful spring morning. All the walkers start with a bounce in their step, eager to enjoy all the day has to offer. That joy fights through any fatigue at the finish line when we remember that each step is a gift to the future. Although we walk by our own power, the power is transformed into hope for others. It is an opportunity for all of us to support the programs and services for at-risk youth. The best way to enjoy the Walk is with friends, family, neighbors, and co-workers. Teams of 5 or more get a discount on registration fees. The Registration Fee is $25 before the event and $30 on the day of the event. Proceeds support eleven weeks of New Adventures Camp for our residents – sports & fitness, art & music, horseback riding & swimming, field trips & cookouts, reading & gardening – days of adventure, learning and achieving. Message

from the

CEO

I hear this statement dozens of times every year. “I drive pass

here all the time and never knew what was back here.” They are

describing traveling down Bloomsbury Avenue with only a

slight glimpse of the campus – even with the new speed cameras

slowing traffic.

We can talk about history, acreage, buildings, and facilities –

but that is what we are and not who we are. The story of The

Children’s Home is best told by all the people who have been

positively impacted by the Home over 155 years. We are

gathering stories from current and past residents, members of

the Board of Directors, current and former staff members, and

hundreds of volunteers.

There are stories of suffering and resilience, heartache and

healing, anger and joy, loss and illumination, despair and hope,

solitude and community, a forgettable past and a bright future.

The toll of disease and war in the early years move aside for the

new challenges of paternal drug abuse and incarceration, human

trafficking, and gender identity.

“I gather together the dreams, fantasies, experiences that

preoccupied me as a girl, that stay with me and appear and

reappear in different shapes and forms in all my work. Without

telling everything that happened, they document all that

remains most vivid.” bell hooks

We invite you to follow our theme, “My Story,” on our website

(www.thechildrenshome.net), Facebook page

(facebook.com/thechildrenshome.maryland), and upcoming

events listed in this publication.

As always, we look forward to your awesome support and

assistance to meet the critical needs of the children, youth, and

families.
