Note from the Volunteer Manager:…

It has been a wonderful month full of fun trips and celebrations at the J.L. Turner Center, so let’s keep the momentum going as we step into April.

This month we’d like to celebrate the beginning of the Spring season with a Craft and Service Day. And, what better way to welcome the warm weather than by painting flower pots and planting flowers? We will be decorating pots for our own homes and to be delivered to the Nashville VA Hospital. Veteran Affairs Hospitals across the nation work to improve the health of veterans through high-quality care that focuses on each vets’ individual needs. They are committed to creating a safe environment for veterans to receive care and support. So, let’s say a big thank you to our service men and women by sharing some Spring cheer!

In addition, we will be conducting a snack drive at the J.L. Turner Center throughout April and May to support the East Nashville Hope Exchange. Check out the information posted in the lobby to learn more about the Hope Exchange and for a list of snacks you can donate to help support their summer program and mission. Let’s see if we can completely fill our donation box!

One of my favorite things about the Turner Center is the welcoming and loving environment, so let’s spread some of this love to the rest of the Nashville community this month.

Sincerely,

Hannah Lee

Letter from the Director…

Greetings, I have an important announcement I wanted to share with you all that goes into

effect this month.

FiftyForward and the YMCA of Middle Tennessee have recently come to terms on an updated

agreement that helps to continue providing our services inside the Bellevue Family YMCA for the

next 12 years. Very little will change for our members, but you may see some adjustments to the

times and locations of some of our activities. For example, our new agreement involves the Y

having primary access to the Activity Room for their expanding programs. We will, however,

continue to be able to hold events in that space and others throughout the building, as it has been.

One benefit we will soon be able to offer is FiftyForward ONLY memberships. Your YMCA membership will

continue to give you the added benefit of FiftyForward membership. However, if you or anyone you know would like

to just join the FiftyForward J.L. Turner Center, and only participate in our programming, current or perspective

members will be able to do so for the cost of $120/year ($10 a month). We will have more details on how to do this

in the very near future.

All the best,

Derek Stogner

Director, FiftyForward J.L. Turner Center

Letter from the Program Director…

Happy Spring! I hope you are all enjoying the longer days of sunshine. We had a fantastic time

last month exploring local coffee roasting companies, so much fun in fact that we are now going

to explore tea! We have a couple trips planned to Shineworthy Tea and Dose Coffee & Tea. At

Shineworthy, we are going to learn the history of tea, how to properly brew different varieties,

and taste 10-12 teas with your favorite one paired with chocolate. At Dose, we will dabble in both

coffee and tea and get to taste specialty brands of both types.

We have many classes for the taking this month. April’s art class will focus on basic acrylic

techniques with a springtime theme and will be available in two separate sessions. Beginner Line Dance class is

kicking off on April 19th and will continue for 8 weeks. April is National Poetry Month, and I am excited to have

Alexandra Rose here to share and explore poetry. She is the talented sister of our very own Hannah Lee! We are

also offering guitar and piano lessons with instructors from the Green Hills Guitar Studio. Be sure to get signed up

for a weekly ongoing session.

I am especially looking forward to some of our trips and outings this month. The sunshine and warm weather has

me itching to be outside. I hope you will join us for an easy stroll and moderate hike through Edwin Warner park at

the start of the month. We will round out the month with two exciting trips, one to the Tennessee Forensic Crime

Lab and the other to the Main Nashville Public Library for a tour their Civil Rights Room.

I am thrilled that we were able to pair one of our monthly food gatherings, Lunchin’ Around, with the “Bellevue

Down Under” fundraiser. A portion of all proceeds made on that day will be donated to support a variety of Bellevue

organizations. I hope that you are able grab lunch with our community members and support Bellevue.

Warm Wishes,

Brandy Lamb

Did you know that April is

National Volunteer Month?

We are so lucky to have such wonderful volunteers at the J.L. Turner Center. Currently, we have 29 consistent volunteers that help our center run successfully. We are so grateful for all the time and dedication our volunteers devote to the center, and we would just like to recognize them for all they do! Please join us in encouraging and thanking our volunteers this month.

J.L. Turner Center Snack Drive

During the months of April and May we will be collecting snack items in support of

the East Nashville Hope Exchange (ENHE). ENHE is a nonprofit organization that seeks

to Strengthen the literacy of at-risk children in East Nashville. Each year they host a

summer program to help further students’ education and to provide meals/snacks to

children and Families.

information and a list of snack suggestions, Check out the information

posted in the Turner lobby.

The National Council on Aging (NCOA) created the Aging Mastery Program® (AMP) to help

older adults build their own playbook for aging well. AMP is a fun, innovative, and person-centered

education program that encourages aging mastery—developing sustainable behaviors that lead to

improved health, stronger economic security, enhanced well-being, and increased societal

participation.

This is an evidence-based program, where participants have shown measurable improvements

in these areas of their lives. 98% of participants say the class helped them improve the quality of their

life, 98% of participants rate the quality of the program as excellent or good, and 99% of participants

say the program was fun. At the end of AMP, FiftyForward will host a graduation ceremony and a

certificate of participation will be awarded to those who participated in at least 8 of the classes offered.

CLASSES BEGIN THIS MONTH, and you must register in advance. Thanks to a grant

from the Community Foundation, FiftyForward is offering this $60 program FREE to our

members and various sessions are being offered at all of the seven FiftyForward centers in

Middle Tennessee! Invite others to share in the Aging Mastery experience as well.

Non-members may participate for $60. Sign up now! Check the display board for more info.
