What is IT?

Information Technology is a general term that describes any technology that helps to produce, manipulate, store, communicate, and/or circulate information.

Information Technology (IT) helps to develop every aspect of human life like communication, education, research, national defense, global security, entertainment, and manufacturing.

Genesis of IT:

1968: Computer Introduction in the country for Census IBM1401

1974: National Computer Center Established

1985: Personal Computers available in Nepal paying Nepalese Currency

1990: Liberalization on imports of equipment

1996: Ministry of Science & Technology Formed

1998: Nepal Telecommunications Authority (NTA) has been established

Genesis of IT:

2000: First IT Policy Announced2001: National Information Technology Center (NICT) formed as ICT implementation body.2003: High Level Commission for Information Technology (HLCIT) established2004: Electronics Transaction Act officially declared.2005: Revised IT Policy, Nepali Unicode, Localization of Microsoft window, office XP and Launch of NepaLinux.2006: First IT park started to function . 2008: ADSL Technology introduced.

Nepal’s Presence in IT

Some Facts:

The Internet was first introduced into Nepal in 1993 in a venture of the erstwhile Royal Nepal Academy of Science and Technology (RONAST) and Mercantile Office Systems (MOS).

The highly trained personnel in the public and private sectors have been organizing themselves into a IT profession, the most notable effort being the 1992, establishment of a Computer Associations of Nepal (CAN) and the 1997, establishment of the Internet Users Group.

Information Technology (IT) education is a study of technology, which provides an opportunity for people to learn about the processes and knowledge related to technology.

Study of Information technology provides not only specialized IT skills, but also builds the

Professionalism within a person.

In education system IT is in initial stage. Though IT education in Nepal is no more newly born child.

In secondary level school curriculum, computer education is included as an optional subject.

The access of E-mail and Internet facilities are provided to the students in some of the schools.

Most of the public schools of the country are not equipped by IT facilities and do not have the easy access to it.

Couple of universities have come out broadly with their own programs in IT or through their affiliated colleges mostly providing theoretical knowledge of IT.

Many private and multinational ICT training institutions like CPN, NIIT, New Horizon, Aptech, etc are providing Professional courses and Microsoft, oracle, Cisco, and RHCE certification courses, etc. are provided by various ICT institutions.

But our present IT literacy rate is below 5%.
