How to Beat the Heat
Here are some tips to keep your house cool during Portland’s hottest summer days.
Wait, where’s the Air Conditioning?
Relatively few of Portland's homes have air conditioning. You’re going to need to find alternative solutions to keep your home cool.
Use your Windows
Leave your windows open during the evening to let cool air in. In the morning close the windows and blinds to trap the cool air inside.
Don’t touch that Oven
Your house will feel much cooler during the summer if you're not running the oven. Try grilling outside instead.
Choose the Right Fan
There are three main types of fans you should consider. Ceiling fans, Box fans, and Oscillating fans.
Ceiling Fans
Ceiling fans circulate air very efficiently, but ceiling fans take work to install and are expensive.
Box Fans
Box fans are great for placing in windows to circulate air and work best in pairs.
Oscillating Fans
Oscillating fans are the most useful to move air around a single room, but they do lack power and efficiency.
Don’t Buy A Swamp Cooler
Swamp coolers work by circulating water and evaporating air. Unfortunately Portland’s climate isn’t dry enough for them be effective.
Buying an Air Conditioner
If you buy an AC, focus on individual rooms, you’ll probably need less than you think. Central AC can be an expensive option.
Plan Ahead
The air conditioning and fan departments are a sea of empty shelves on hot days. If you’re planning on buying something to stay cool, buy it now.
Enjoy the Summer!
What if your house is still too hot? Enjoy some of the Portland area’s wonderful opportunities to get out of the house and stay cool.
Fun Summertime Activities to Stay Cool
Here are some great ways to stay cool:1. Splashing around Jamison Square Park2. Watching a Movie in one of Portland’s beautiful parks 3. Shopping at the Lloyd Center or Pioneer Place and enjoying their AC4. Taking a dip in the Washougal River5. Heading up to Mt. Hood for some snow tubing.
