Melrose Baptist Church came intobeing because God gave 21 brave soulsthe vision of a new church fornorthwest Roanoke City. OnSeptember 15, 1907, they met in a one-room building on Gilmer Avenue toorganize Melrose Baptist Church. Fromthose 21 charter members, thecongregation has grown to an enrollment of more than eleven hundred.

In 1917 the church moved to new Sunday School space at Twelfth Street andMelrose Avenue, Northwest. A new sanctuary followed in 1925 that wouldeventually see crowds of more than one thousand on Easter and in

special citywide revivals. Manymembers cherish fond memoriesof the old church’s sanctuary withthat huge balcony. Anothercongregation is now experiencingthe magic of “old Melrose.”

In response to the needs of anearby community, Melrose began a

mission ministry in 1952. That ministry grew and prospered so that in 1970 themission work begun by Melrose members became the Forest Park BaptistChurch

In 1970, Melrose relocated to its current site at 3520 Peters Creek Road on 19acres of land in Roanoke County. The church added educational space in 1980and again in 1993 when the sanctuary and offices also were remodeled.

In 2005, a new wing wasadded which encompasseda new Media center, aconference room, and achildren’s area. The formerchildren’s areas wereremodeled for youth andadult educational space.

PurposesWorship: Planned for God’s Pleasure

Fellowship: Formed for God's Family

To worship and praise God should be the goal of all who know and love Jesus. There is no better way to praise and honor God than through consistent Bible study, prayer and worship with fellow Christians. Sunday morning worship at Melrose is a highlight of the week for members and guests.

The morning worship service begins at 10:45. The service is planned to help the congregation focus on God and His salvation. Traditional hymns as well as contemporary music provide a worshipful atmosphere for all age groups. From the opening greeting through the benediction, the ministers encourage worship and thanks to God for His Son, Jesus the Christ. Fellowship with others, prayer and praise to God, soul-searching through the guidance of the Holy Spirit, and concern for lost souls help worshipers leave the service ready to reach out to others.

“Enter to Worship, Depart to Serve” continues to be the challenge of this ministry. All persons are invited to join in worship at Melrose.

God planned for us to love and serve Him and each other. Fellowship is a vital piece of the fabric of Melrose, and we are a welcoming, warm, and loving congregation. There is fellowship in corporate worship on Sunday morning, in small groups during the Sunday School hour, and on Wednesday evenings as individuals and families meet for a shared meal and participate in age-related activities.

Senior adults meet once a month with their group, Living Abundantly After Fifty, or LAAF. They gather for fellowship, inspiration, mission activities, and entertainment.

Mission groups meet monthly to learn about missions and share in opportunities for service.

Groups of youth and adults enjoy fellowship through participation in retreats and special projects, and in helping to repair homes and church facilities in other localities.

Fellowship through the music ministry includes choirs for adults, youth, children, and preschoolers as well as other instrumental groups.

Discipleship: Created to Become Like Christ

Ministry: Shaped for Serving God

Bible study is the backbone of the church’s mission to reach and win the lost. Sunday School is the primary Bible teaching tool. Melrose has many small groups organized for all ages from preschool through senior adults. There are coed classes for youth and adults as well as individual classes for men and women. All the groups or classes seek to find innovative methods that will interest members and prospects in the study of God’s Word and its impact on their lives.

In addition to Sunday morning studies, there are classes at other times throughout the year to study the Bible or other inspirational training books. Discipleship training is an ongoing process for Christians to grow in the wisdom and knowledge of Christ.

The Melrose heritage is one of caring and giving. Many volunteers gladly perform tasks every day without any thought except to use their talents for the Lord’s service. They often work behind the scenes to ensure this busy congregation continues to thrive and reach out to the community. Volunteers among the church members take care of numerous tasks of upkeep to the church property. They attend to the emotional and physical needs of the church family. They also provide a variety of services to assist in the worship experience. A Prayer Line is available through the church office to request prayer or to give information about specific needs. All of us are shaped for serving God. Even though our services may be diverse, the love for God and for God’s children should be the same in every heart. Melrose is full of volunteers whose many talents serve God in this church.

Missions: Made for EvangelismOutreach activities are ongoing at Melrose. In addition to the Sunday morning worship services that seek to minister to those who need to make a commitment for Jesus or to find a church home, several groups have specific programs to enlist members or assist those who need help.1. The WMU provides opportunities for learning about and doing missions in small groups:

Women on Mission for adults, Youth on Mission, and Children in Action/Mission Friends.

2. Members support the Roanoke Valley Baptist Association’s various ministries. For example, they donate Bibles, food, and toiletries for the Truck Stop ministry to help truck drivers, their families, and other travelers who may need emergency assistance. Another example is the collection of children’s books to be distributed locally and through mission trips to Southwest Virginia through the Book Net ministry.

3. Church members and mission groups regularly volunteer time, financial aid, and supplies to support Keystone Community Center and Friendship House in intercity Roanoke.

4. The congregation donates various items throughout the year to the Roanoke Rescue Mission and other local agencies. Youth regularly serve meals at the Mission.

5. Members enjoy filling shoeboxes with toys and other items for Operation Christmas Child sponsored by Samaritan’s Purse, an organization founded by the Rev. Franklin Graham.

6. Youth participate in Appalachian Outreach so they may become aware of the suffering and needs of hurting people and learn to help alleviate those needs.

7. Adults participate in mission trips to help renovate or rebuild church facilities and other structures in various locations

8. Members support various ministries of the Baptist General Association of Virginia such as disaster relief and construction projects in areas across the state.

Ministries for Serving God

Sunday School

Sunday Morning Worship

Sunday School is exciting for preschool children as they enjoy Bible stories, sing-a-longs, playacting, and other learning experiences.

Four and five year-olds love to go to the “big church” to hear a children’s sermon and interact with the Minister of Youth and Children. Many times his sermons and the children’s answers provide a teaching moment for adults as well as the children. While their parents worship, the children continue to receive care and nurturing in their classrooms in “extended session.” Childcare is also provided as needed for Sunday and Wednesday evening activities and for other events.

Melrose Baptist Church understands that God created man to serve Him. Whenever we serve others, we are serving God. Following are Melrose

ministries listed by age groupings:

PRESCHOOL (Birth through Five Years)

Sunday Evening ActivitiesPreschoolers participate in CIA’s/Mission Friends where they learn about missionaries and missions around the world. They also enjoy a music learning time which includes singing. They occasionally sing during the morning worship service.

Members and guests enjoy interesting programs, daytime excursions, and luncheons prepared by members or local restaurants. Melrose church membership is not a requirement, and new members are always welcome. This group contributes food items every month to the church benevolent pantry. Members of the Homebound Ministry regularly visit the church’s shut-ins with small gifts to cheer and encourage folks confined to their homes or nursing facilities. Through this ministry, the homebound members know their church appreciates and cherishes them.
