The Survivors Guide to Discipleship New Life Church Ministry Training Spring 2012 The Survivors Guide to Discipleship Lesson 1: What is Discipleship? Slide 2 Matthew 28:19-20 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age. 2 Timothy 2:2 And what you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses entrust to faithful men who will be able to teach others also. Titus 2:3-5 Older women likewise are to be reverent in behavior, not slanderers or slaves to much wine. They are to teach what is good, and so train the young women to love their husbands and children, to be self-controlled, pure, working at home, kind, and submissive to their own husbands, that the word of God may not be reviled. A Christian who isnt discipling someone is a contradiction. He ought to be reproducing his life in the lives of others. Slide 3 What are some the reasons many of us do not engage in discipleship? Slide 4 What do you think of when you hear the word disciple? Slide 5 The word disciple is used 261 times in the NT Slide 6 MAKE DISCIPLES Matt 28:19-20 Going Baptizing Teaching Slide 7 GUARD THE TREASURE By the Holy Spirit who dwells within us, guard the good deposit entrusted to you. 2 Timothy 1:14 Slide 8 PASS IT ON Slide 9 LEARNER LIKE A TEACHER Slide 10 BE LIKE JESUS Romans 8:29 For those whom [God] foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the firstborn among many brothers. Slide 11 WHY BECOME A DISCIPLER? For Your Joy Philippians 2:1-2 So if there is any encouragement in Christ, any comfort from love, any participation in the Spirit, any affection and sympathy, complete my joy by being of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind. 2 John 1:4 I rejoiced greatly to find some of your children walking in the truth, just as we were commanded by the Father. Slide 12 WHY BECOME A DISCIPLER? For Your Joy For Gods Glory (John 15:1-8) 1 "I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinedresser. 2 Every branch in me that does not bear fruit he takes away, and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, that it may bear more fruit. 3 Already you are clean because of the word that I have spoken to you. 4 Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. 5 I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. 6 If anyone does not abide in me he is thrown away like a branch and withers; and the branches are gathered, thrown into the fire, and burned. 7 If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. 8 By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit and so prove to be my disciples. Slide 13 WHY BECOME A DISCIPLER? For Your Joy For Gods Glory (John 15:9-13) 9 As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Abide in my love. 10 If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father's commandments and abide in his love. 11 These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full. 12 "This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. 13 Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends. Slide 14 KEY ELEMENTS TO EFFECTIVE DISCIPLESHIP 1.Impartation 2.Instruction 3.Inspiration 4.Imitation 5.Intercession But we were gentle among you, like a nursing mother taking care of her own children. So, being affectionately desirous of you, we were ready to share with you not only the gospel of God but also our own selves, because you had become very dear to us. I Thess 2:7-8 Slide 15 KEY ELEMENTS TO EFFECTIVE DISCIPLESHIP 1.Impartation 2.Instruction 3.Inspiration 4.Imitation 5.Intercession And what you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses entrust to faithful men who will be able to teach others also. 2 Tim 2:2 Slide 16 KEY ELEMENTS TO EFFECTIVE DISCIPLESHIP 1.Impartation 2.Instruction 3.Inspiration 4.Imitation 5.Intercession And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near. Heb 10:24-25 Slide 17 KEY ELEMENTS TO EFFECTIVE DISCIPLESHIP 1.Impartation 2.Instruction 3.Inspiration 4.Imitation 5.Intercession I urge you, then, be imitators of me. 1 Cor 4:16 Be imitators of me, as I am of Christ. 1 Cor 11:1 Slide 18 KEY ELEMENTS TO EFFECTIVE DISCIPLESHIP 1.Impartation 2.Instruction 3.Inspiration 4.Imitation 5.Intercession And so, from the day we heard, we have not ceased to pray for you, asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of his will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, so as to walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him, bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God. May you be strengthened with all power, according to his glorious might, for all endurance and patience with joy, giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in light.
