“A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves largesse from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates promising the most benefits from the public treasury with the result that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy, always followed by a dictatorship. The average age of the world's greatest civilizations has been 200 years.” –AlexisdeTocqueville
Iwishthisweren’ttruebutalas…
The minimum wage ballot initiative is merely a voter-initiated entitlement. By the time you see this article theminimumwageforAlbuquerquewillhavebeendecidedbythepeople.Wehavebeeninfrontofthepeoplemakingsuretheyknowwhat'srightforbusinessesandtheeconomy.
Our economy is sinking becausepeople don’t understand the basics of economics and they are willing to vote themselves and others “largesse”.Arecentpollaboutvotingon a local economic issue proved that messaging aroundsoundeconomicpolicydidnotmattertotheaveragevoter.
Making a profit is not evil.Makingaprofitisimperativetostayinginbusiness.Noonegoesintobusinesstolosemoneyorbreakeven.Themotivationbehindstartingabusiness isto do something enjoyable andmakemoney doing it. Thegovernment makes money on business by taxing profits. Therefore, profits support government jobs. Businesses also support charities by donating part of their profit to charities.
If you increase costs in one place, businesses will go somewhere else (where costs have not increased) in ordertoremaincompetitivewithotherbusinesses.SometimesthismeansmovingaplanttoChina,othertimesitmeansmovingfromthecitytothecounty.Businesses will not be likely to open in your location if it costs significantly more to do businessinyourlocation.
We are in dangerous waters when folks can’t logicallycalculate the consequences of their actions. Increasing theminimumwageinAlbuquerqueisabadmoveeconomically.Prices will increase, people will be laid-off, business will locate anywhere but Albuquerque.
HelloEveryone,As you may know, myname is Randy Kenna,DirectorofOperationsforRudy’s “Country Store”and Bar-B-Q, and I amthe new President forNMRAfortheupcomingyear. NRA ROLLS OUT EMPLOYEE-EDGE
Intheworksoverthelastcoupleofyears, theNationalRestaurantAssociation(NRA)is now introducing the EmployeeEdgeProgram, a new benefits and awardsprogram focused on rewarding andretaining restaurant industry employeesbyprovidinguniquelytailoredbenefits.Italsoprovidesimportantcostsavingsandproductivityenhancementsforrestaurantownersandoperators.

For owners andoperators, the Programprovides employeesaccess to services andprogramsatnocosttotheemployer. For the employee, the Program offers amuch better way for the unbanked andunderbanked employee to manage theirmoney. Whatever thecase, we are looking forward to Session2013. Session begins on January 15 andends at noon on March 16. Since thissession is a 60-day session, legislationonanytopiccanbeintroducedandwitha new batch of freshmen legislators,I am pretty certain we will see a broadrangeoflegislationputinthehopper.
Oneofourtopissueswewillbelookingat supporting this year is changing thecertification for alcohol servers fromevery five years to every three yearsand with that reducing the penalty fora certified server unknowingly servingalcohol to aminor from a felony on the
first offense to amisdemeanor.WehavesupportedthislegislationformanyyearsandIamconfidentwithalltheworkwehavedone, and the fact this ismy luckyyear, we will get this passed throughthe legislature and up to the Governorfor her signature. The Regulation andLicensingDepartment is supporting thislegislation so we look forward to somegoodteamworkwiththeSuperintendentof RLD and with our partners at thePetroleumMarketersAssociation.
A big issue we will oppose if we seeit come up is an effort to change theconstitutionofthestateofNewMexicotoincrease the minimum or training wageand tie thatwage to the consumerpriceindex.Wefeelthatthedecisiontoincreasewagesshouldbemadeatthefederallevelbut if it must be done at the state levelthenlegislatorsshouldhaveasayinwhenandhowtoincreasethetrainingwagesinthe state. A constitutional amendmentwouldmeanthatanytimeachangeneeds

With the Durbin Amendment taking effect
You’ll see more money in your bank account.(As long as you process with Heartland.)
Your Durbin Dollars are Waiting for You
On October 1, important legislation that reduces the amount you pay for processing debit card transactions went into effect. The Durbin Amendment imposed a cap on debit interchange — or transaction fees — and every cent of savings you see adds up to valuable Durbin Dollars you can put to use for your business.
Get What’s Coming to You!
This is exciting news for businesses like yours. But what you may not realize is that before your Durbin Dollars can get to you, they go through your card processor — which may not be passing along these savings to your business.
Without exception, Heartland is sending every single dollar mandated in the Durbin legislation back to its merchants. In fact, based on our calculations, the average Heartland merchant will see an additional $1,200 annually in Durbin Dollars. If you’re not getting everything you deserve, ask your current processor what they are doing with your savings.
To learn more, call Heartland’s Durbin information line at 888.475.2180 or visit GetYourDurbinDollars.com
Here’s how it breaks down
21 cents .05%risk-based
Before Durbin, the average cost per transaction = 44 cents
After Durbin, the average cap = about 24 cents
This represents a savings of 20 cents per debit transaction!
