Principal’s Message

Welcome to this year’s Pass the Torch Dinner and Auction! We are always thrilled to welcome back many faithful parishioners, school parents and friends who believe in our vision of a new school for St. Augustine’s Parish.

For twelve years, we have been blessed with the generosity

of many groups of people. From within the school community, again this year there has been a team of creative individuals who have worked tirelessly as a team to establish our theme, “A Night in Paris”, and ensure that every detail compliments and affirms our vision for this once-a-year gathering. Hundreds of individuals, groups and companies give generously of their time and talent, and you, assembled guests have the honour of bringing life to this spectacular evening.

Thank you each and all - for your presence and support this evening. We are witness to the truth that when a community is prayerful in its intentions, generous with its time and talent and thoughtful about its giving, so much can be accomplished in Jesus’ name.

We are all privileged to be a part of such a commitment to Catholic Education - and we are abundantly grateful that you have chosen to be a part of our Parish’s efforts to “put a shovel in the ground” this year!

On behalf of all the children, those who will live out part of their lives in our new school, and those to come in the future, know you are in our prayers each and every day as anexpression of our gratitude and love.

Pastor’s Message

History places us in the story – the story of where we have come from, of where we are now and perhaps most significantly of where we are headed. History is the DNA of our aspirations as a people and as a community. It charts our progress, encourages us forward and defines our future.

The history of Pass The Torch is our unique story as a parish, a people and a school. Pass the Torch began 13 years ago at the dawn of a new millennium. It was born of Vision and Hope and continues in Faith.

In 2001 St. Augustine’s School Principal Catherine Oberndorf recruited Grade Two parent Brenda Juric to chair a Fund Raising Committee with the spectacular goal of building a new school. The Grade Two parents embraced the vision and accepted the challenge by attending rival fund raisers, taking notes and researching such events as Silent Auctions. They were formidable in their ambition and fearless in their quest – mostly because they had no idea what they were getting themselves into!

Nathalie Meyer was the first to insist on a budget. Nathalie remained undaunted when told that there was no budget. She merely insisted that she would obtain everything we required for free – and then promptly made sure it happened that way. That first event raised $36,000!

With that auspicious beginning Pass The Torch became an annual event at the Hellenic Centre. It now encompasses hundreds of dedicated volunteers and donors each year. Pass The Torch brings together a diverse community of St. Augustine’s parishioners, school parents and families and provides an opportunity to interact with area residents and local businesses.

7

8

Each school family volunteers a minimum of five hours per year to this event and many give countless hours more. Local celebrities and politicians such as Christy Clark & Bill Vander Zalm have consistently given their support to our Pass The Torch gala evening. In the past few years we have raised close to $100,000 at each event. Thanks to annual traditions such as having our servers come from St. Augustine’s Alumni, hosting a popular Silent Auction and lively entertainment provided by Peter Juric’s Dance Band we have forged a history of community built on hard work and suffused with joy.

With Pass The Torch we know the history of where we come from and where we are headed. This is our history; strengthened by diversity and united in a common goal. It is where a new school becomes a reality and quality education and community is the by-product. “Passing The Torch” expands these ideals and forwards them to future generations. Pass The Torch is our history and our legacy. A legacy born of Vision and Hope and continued in Faith.

Now let’s party!
