The Pastor’s Pen The Pastor’s Pen The Pastor’s Pen The Pastor’s Pen Dear Brothers and Sisters of St. John’s,
This is Deacon Kevin Ewing’s last weekend at St. John’s as he pre-
pares to return to Rome to continue his studies. It has been a great pleasure to have Deacon Kevin here for his pastoral internship and,
while we are saddened by his departure, we rejoice that he is moving
forward to ordination to the priesthood! We are hoping that he will be able to return to St. John’s during holiday breaks this year and
eventually celebrate Mass here after being ordained a priest next
June!. Please keep him, and all the men in our archdiocese who are
discerning vocations to the priesthood, in your prayers.
This week, many students return to school! I know many families
have been traveling with sons and daughters as they go off (or back)
to college, to help them settle in. Our school faculty returns this Monday and will begin by attending the 8:30 AM Mass. This week-
end, many families new to St. John’s School are attending the 9 AM
Mass and a welcome brunch afterwards. We welcome you and pray that you will find St. John’s to be a community that assists you in
forming your children who experience and share God’s love.
Make sure that you get your children registered for religious educa-tion classes as well as sacramental preparation programs. Confirma-
tion registration is up and running and classes start shortly! Call the
Faith Formation Office if you need assistance, or go to our website to register. Adults, I also encourage you to take a serious look at the
programs we offer here at St. John’s for you to grow in your faith as
well. We will be offering an 8-week course entitled Unlocking the Mysteries of the Bible that is a great introduction and requires little
homework. Walking With Purpose women’s bible study and our That
Man is You for our men are also starting up soon. Make a commit-
ment this year to grow in your faith and connect with a great com-
munity that will support you in the process!
Next Saturday, Aug. 27, Fr. George Asigre will celebrate a Mass of
Thanksgiving at 5:15 PM marking his 25 years of priestly ministry. Please join us as we celebrate with him! There will be a light recep-
tion in the Gathering Space following. Also, mark your calendars
now for Sunday, Sept. 18 which will be Sister Maureen Kelly Day!
We will honor Sr. Maureen as she retires as our leader of Ministry to
the Sick and Homebound with a Mass of Thanksgiving at 10:45 AM,
followed by a Parish Potluck Picnic. Watch for details in the coming weeks. Let’s make this a big deal for her in honor of all she has done
for our sick and homebound parishioners!
Now, relish the last days of summer vacation. Know that you are
loved by God and are an important part of this community of faith!

Welcome to St. John’s!Welcome to St. John’s!Welcome to St. John’s!Welcome to St. John’s!
If you are visiting with us today, or perhaps have been away for awhile, we invite you to become an active part of our parish
community. Please fill out a registration form, available at the welcome desk on weekends or at the Parish Office, and for-
mally enroll as a parishioner. Parish registra-tion is necessary when requesting eligibility forms to serve as sponsors at Baptisms and Confirmations. Young adults, living inde-
pendently, should register in their own names. Please do not hesitate to contact us if we can help in any way. If you are not Ro-man Catholic, know that you are most wel-
come. While we are unable to extend a general invitation to receive Holy Commun-ion, please feel free to come forward at
Communion time, and cross your arms over your chest as the minister will say a brief prayer as you make your “spiritual commun-ion.”

A True Disciple in Mission Missionary Rebecca Tilyou, former pa-rishioner and daughter of parishioners Dona and Eric Tilyou, will
be speaking about her missionary work in the Philippines. In her
third year as a missionary for Family Missions Company, her pri-
mary apostolate is to preach the gospel while serving the poor.
Join us on Wednesday, Aug. 24 from 7:30 - 9 PM in the Youth Room to hear her amazing stories of God’s Grace and Mercy
being showered upon her and those she serves. For more infor-
mation, contact Jeanette Cohn at [email protected].
Fr. George Asigre is marking his 25th Anniversary of ordination to the priesthood with a special

Washington Medical Center since his arrival in
May. Please make plans to join him and pray for him as he
marks this significant anniversary. A light reception will follow.
Save the Date On Sunday, Sept. 18 join us at the 10:45 AM Mass to honor Sister Maureen Kelly as she retires as our leader of the
Ministry to the Sick and Homebound. Following Mass, we will

for harvest, so now is the time to take care of
the garden for a week. You are asked to come
at least every other day to harvest (and water
and weed as needed). As of press time, all of
the remaining weeks in August and September are available.

Do you think you could be a better hus-
band? A better father? A better leader? This year of That Man Is You will focus on “man
in his relationship to his spouse.” Heavily
influenced by the thoughts of Pope John
Paul II, A Light to the Nations takes men on a journey into an
important spiritual reality: “The family has been placed at the
heart of the great struggle between good and evil, between
life and death and between love and all that is opposed to
love.” It is modeled on the story of Job from the Old Testa-
ment. Please join us on Saturdays this fall, beginning Sept. 10 from 6:45 - 8:30 AM. Contact [email protected] to register or for more information.
Are you Ready to Unlock the Mystery of the
Bible? This fall, we will offer an eight-part study, Unlocking the Mystery of the Bible, to make
the complex simple. It will help you uncover
the story woven throughout Scripture so that
you can get the “big picture” of the Bible and understand
what it is all about. The Bible is a story about the Father’s unfail-
ing love for you - a love that you are now called to share with
others. You will make sense of the Bible and see how it relates
to your everyday life, discover the remarkable connections
between the Old and New Testaments, and see how the sac-
raments, the Church and our entire Catholic Faith is rooted in
Scripture. The study will be offered on Monday mornings and Tuesday evenings, and is a great starting point if you have not done bible study before. Go to www.stjohnsp.org/unlocking to learn more and to sign up.
Reconciliation: Confessions are heard Saturdays 4-5 PM and First Fridays 9-9:30 AM and 7-7:30 PM (as well as special times during Advent and Lent) and by ap-pointment with a priest.
Baptisms: Parents who wish to have their children baptized should contact Jen Mayer, Coordinator of Adult Faith Formation, to begin the baptism prepara-tion process. Baptisms are celebrated at Mass and on Saturdays at noon. Please note that godparents must be at least 16 years old and confirmed, practicing Catholics. There must be at least one Catholic god-parent, but other baptized Christians may serve as Christian witnesses.
Marriage: Couples planning to marry must contact one of the priests or deacons at least 6 months prior to the tentative date of marriage. Participation in a marriage preparation program is required.
Ministry to the Sick: The Sacrament of Anointing should be administered at the beginning of a serious illness. Please notify the parish office when a parish-ioner is hospitalized. If you are unable to attend Mass and wish to receive Holy Communion, please contact the Parish Office.
Confirmation: Youth in 9th grade and above are eli-gible to prepare for the reception of the sacrament. Adults who have not been confirmed are invited to contact Jen Mayer, Coordinator of Adult Faith For-mation, to make arrangements for the sacrament.

Con-tact Dawn Sirinakis at [email protected].
Becoming Catholic / Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA): Prepares adults to join the Catholic Church (who may not be baptized or were baptized in another denomination) as well as to prepare those baptized as Catholics but who have never received First Communion or Confirmation. Groups form at various times throughout the year. For information, contact Jen Mayer, Coordinator of Adult Faith For-mation.
Eucharistic Adoration: The Blessed Sacrament is exposed the first Friday of each month (and each Friday during Advent and Lent) following the 8:30 AM Mass until 7 PM.

WWP registration is open
for next year! Would you
like to grow in faith and
build friendships with wom-
en who share your values and concerns?
Please join us at Walking with Purpose (a
women’s bible study) this fall! Sessions are
held on Thursday mornings and Thursday evenings. Childcare is provided for ages 1 – 5 (during the AM session only). For more information and to register, please visit
www.stjohnsp.org/wwp.
Hosts, Leaders, Geeks Needed! In the coming year, some of the Adult Faith offer-
ings are slated to be held offsite in parish-
ioners’ homes. This will allow us to expand
the selections of programs offered and will
build a greater sense of community. In or-
der to make this happen, the Adult Faith
Committee is looking for folks willing to
serve as host (which would require you to
open your home weekly to a small group
for the duration of the program), leaders
(folks who would guide the discussion, fol-
low up with missing members, handle re-
sources), and geeks/technology helpers
(who can help the host connect comput-
er to TV in order to stream the videos so
those attending can view it comfortably).
If you are interested in serving in one of
these roles, please contact Jen Mayer at
410-647-4892.
RCIA/Becoming Catholic runs in multiple tracks (comprehensive and targeted),
and is always looking for people who are
interested in becoming Catholic. Please
contact Jen Mayer at 410-647-4892 to
learn more about the RCIA/Becoming
Catholic process and learn which track
would be best for you.
Men’s Aquinas Group Men, come join us on Saturday mornings in the Parish Center from 7 - 8:15 AM as we reflect on the Sum-
ma Theologica of St. Thomas Aqui-
nas. Remember that "a man has free
choice to the extent that he is rational."
We will be concluding our reflections on
the Sacrament of Matrimony, as found in
the Supplement of the third part of the
Summa. For more information contact Bob
at 410-757-9395 or Bill at 410-518-9977 or
visit sites.google.com/site/aquinasgroup/.
Youth Formation www.stjohnsp.org/youth www.stjohnsp.org/re
Office Hours: 8:30 AM - 4:30 PM, Monday - Thursday
Worthy of the Call WOTC is the child protection pro-gram required of all youth 14-17 years of age who
will be working with children. The next training will
be held on Tuesday, Sept. 6 from 6:30 - 7:45 PM. This includes youth working in the Religious Education
programs, scouts, sacristans, choir, etc.
To register, please contact Nikki at [email protected] or 410-647-4892.
Religious Education Registration Classes begin in 4 weeks. Some classes are filled to capacity. Have you registered your children yet? Students are ac-
cepted to particular class sessions on a “first come
– first served” basis. Students attending public or private schools, from age 4 through grade 8 are
most welcome. New families and those who have been away for
a period of time should enroll in person. Return your form to the
office or register and pay tuition online. A full or partial payment
must accompany the registration in order to ensure placement.
Visit www.stjohnsp.org/re. Please direct questions to Ruth at 410-647-4892 or [email protected].
Special Needs Religious Ed A class is forming for chil-dren in the 6-8 age range. We also have a class for
children in the 11–13 range. These ages are approxi-
mate. Children and young people who have spe-
cial needs or challenges have the right, like others
their age, to know the “mystery of faith” and their
loving God. Persons with special needs bring a wonderful dimen-
sion and unique gifts to the life of a parish. Please contact John
at 410-647-4892 or [email protected] to discuss how we can meet your child’s needs.
Catechists & Youth Assistants Needed Will your child have a catechist this year? Vacant cate-chist positions include Sunday 9 AM (K, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 8th grades), Sunday 10:45 AM (K, 2nd, 5th
and 8th grades). An office assistant/receptionist is also needed on Wednesday evenings. Substi-
tutes are needed for all sessions. What will it cost
you to become a catechist? Classes are 75 minutes, and you will
spend about an hour preparing your lesson and praying for your
class. You and I by virtue of our baptism are “called forth” to
share the Word of God. Contact John at [email protected] if you are interested in pre-K through grade 8. Contact Jeanette at
[email protected] if you are interested in the Edge program of-fered on Monday evenings for grades 6-8 graders. Contact Ste-
phen at [email protected] if you are interested in high school Life Teen or Confirmation.

What is EDGE? Edge is a Catholic middle school youth ministry pro-
gram. It provides a safe fun
place for youth to find a solid
Catholic community, to get an-
swers to their questions about
faith, and most importantly, to experience Jesus in a profound
and personal way. Why is Edge Important? At this age, teens tend to shift socially and begin to experience tremendous
changes emotionally and intellectually. As they wade through
all the difficulties of this time of life, they have real questions. The
sessions that are provided during an Edge night and the experi-
ence they share in their small groups provide them with real an-
swers. How Does Edge Work? Edge is set up to model the flow of the Mass: Gather-everyone is called together in prayer and
them some form of fun game or skit that relates to the topic of
the night. Proclaim- The topic, based on a yearly theme, is pre-
sented by a guest speaker. The Break- the students are assigned
to a small group based on grade and gender. Questions relat-
ing to the topic are asked by the Core Team member for discus-
sion. Send- ends with prayer of devotion and a challenge to
take home for building faith. How Can You Help? By becoming an Edge Core Team member, you can help by fostering a sup-
portive relationship with the youth in your small group. For more
information, please contact Jeanette Cohn at 443-261-0108

Volunteers Needed Is God calling you to share the Gospel with teenagers? Then you’re in luck - we have amazing opportunities in
our High School youth ministry programs. Whether you are young
or old, we can use you to intentionally disciple the youth of our
parish. We’re looking for people to help teach confirmation clas-

Following up on our story from July 30/31,
the client we were concerned about re-
surfaced and we were once again able
to help her with some food! Last week,
we had a client in need of help with a
security deposit. His was a face I’d seen
many times, but I didn’t know his story. His
family had moved south about four years
ago in hopes of a better life. I missed the
abundant Christmas decorations he’d
put up each year, as some of you may
have too. I thought the worst and always
whispered a prayer as I drove by his
home. As it turns out, his mother has be-
come ill and he came home to help with
her care. This man gave up all he had to
help his mother and now he needs help. I
am so thankful for the generosity of our
parishioners that enabled us to help him
and, maybe in a small way, repay him for
the smiles his decorations put on our fac-
es.
Poor Box Jesus will multiply your gifts to our poor in this life, but more importantly,
in the next. Please be as generous as you
can. There is so much you can do!
Pantry BOGOGO! Buy one, get one, give one. We especially need boxed pota-
toes, canned chicken, and rice/pasta
side dishes.
Clothing, in good condition, is accepted in the receptacle located in the church
parking lot. All clothes are distributed in
Baltimore.
Thank you for your prayers and support as we continue our mission.

programs, visit www.stjohnsp.org/svdp or call the Parish Office at 410-647-4884 ext.
