Summertime
Perhaps my favorite time of the year, summer is just around the cor-
ner: the weather is warm (hot), school is out, baseball is in full swing,
and every day is a good day to hit the golf course. For me, growing up
(and I imagine for many of you as well), summer was also a time for
making memories; families piling in the car for a little vacation time…
quality family bonding time. The Israelites (God’s people) were not
unfamiliar with this family bonding time; they got forty years of it as
the ‘traveled’ from Egypt to the Promised Land.
In the movies family vacations are caricaturized by fighting kids in the
back seat of the family car (National Lampoon’s Family Vacation),
everybody getting on the nerves of everybody else (RV), and in the
end families finally coming together. The same was true of the Israel-
ites: there was fighting and bickering and fingers pointing at everyone;
but all along the way they kept the Sabbath – they kept God in the
center of their travels – and by the end they grew together.
As we swing into summer mode, a few scheduling notes to highlight:
Sunday, June 8th (Pentecost Sunday… wear red to church) is the
last day of Sunday school.
Sunday, June 15th we begin our summer worship schedule. Like
in previous years, our Sunday morning worship will begin at 9:30am.
In addition, we will be adding a Wednesday evening service so if
you happen to be gone for the weekend, you can still make it to
church! The Wednesday evening service will be a guitar-led ser-
vice beginning at 7:00pm and will meet in the adult ed. classrooms
on the first floor of Grace Hall.
August 5th – 8th is Vacation Bible School.
A couple of additional thoughts as we enter the summer season:
1) Like the old Visa credit card commercials used to say, the church is
“everywhere you want to be.” Wherever this summer may take you,
there’s sure to be a church close by where you can remember and ob-
serve the Lord’s Day. And while you are wherever you’re going,
share a bit of your vacation with your church family: weather it’s a quick
trip to the coast, an old fashioned road trip, or travels overseas, send us a
postcard and we’ll put it up on the narthex bulletin board.
2) In the off chance that there is no church close by, remember the word
of our Lord in Matthew 18:20, “For where two or three are gathered in
my name, I am there among them.” In the Augsburg Confession (the
confession of the Lutheran Church), article seven states that the church is
that place where the Word is preached purely and the Sacraments are ad-
ministered in accordance with the Divine mandate: so grab your Bible,
some bread and some wine, and be the church together; Luther once
wrote that within the family is the place where we are most especially
called to be the church together, loving God and loving our neighbors.
I wish you all a happy and safe summer. May God’s traveling mercies
attend you.
Your partner in ministry,
Pastor Kris

College Graduates
Immanuel Family, I’m excited to announce that on May 16th, I graduat-
ed from Fresno State with a Bachelors of Science in Plant Science. I
chose a Plant Health focus and to specialize in ornamental horticulture.
My goal is to work in landscape design, but I’m excited for God’s plan
for me. Thank you to everyone’s prayer and support over the last few
years and especially during the last semester. This last semester would
not have been possible without support from loved ones! This summer
I’m continuing my work at Fresno State Floral.
Thank you again to everyone! Allyson Blayney
Amy Hansen will graduate from UC Davis in the top 10% of her class
on June 6th with a Bachelor of Science degree in Animal Science. She
was accepted into the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine, and
will start the last leg of her dream to become a veterinarian in Au-
gust. Amy is the daughter of Jim and Fran Hansen, and granddaughter
of Dick and Gail Hansen and Jack and Bev Reed.
Timothy Pilegard (Timmy) will be graduating from UCLA in June
with a Bachelor of Science degree in Atmospheric, Oceanic and Envi-
ronmental Sciences and a minor in Geophysics. He enjoyed being on the
UCLA sailing team and instructing sailing. He will continue completing
a research project at UCLA this summer while pursuing a career.
High School Graduates
Michael Pilegard (Mikey) graduated from University High School on
May 17, 2014. He participated in a variety of bands and played a variety
of instruments while at UHS. He also participated in Honor Commis-
sion, the Math Team, Chess Club, Cricket, and represented his school at
the American Legion’s California Boys State. While in high school, he
enjoyed being in the Youth Group, helping with Breaking Grounds and
the Easton Community Food bank, attending Breakaway, playing in the
Praise Band and Forgiven, and working the soundboard here at Immanu-
el. His summers were spent working with veterinarians. He will be at-
tending Cal Poly San Luis Obispo in the fall majoring in Dairy Science.
He hopes to be a large animal veterinarian.
Carissa Severin will be graduating from Washington Union high school
on June 6th. Through the AVID program at Washington Union Carissa
was able to tour many college campuses during the last four years. San
Jose State has always been at the top of her list. She is very excited to be
starting classes there this Fall. Carissa will be majoring in business, but
is also looking forward to enjoying the wonderful photography, and art
programs San Jose State has to offer. Go Spartans!
Robert Hollenbeck will be graduating from Washington Union High
School on June 6th. He has participated in many different activities in the
past 4 years. Robert has been instrumental in making Breaking Grounds
a success. When Breaking Grounds first started, Robert would come ear-
ly and move furniture from the library and set up for whatever activity
was planned for that day. He always went to Breaking Grounds and
made sure that everyone felt comfortable and welcome at his church.
Robert was in the marching, concert and jazz bands for 3 years. This
helped developed his love of music and helped prepare him for Immanu-
el’s Choir and Praise Band. Robert played football both his freshman
and senior years. He got to play in the new stadium which was exciting.
His class will be the first class to graduate in the new stadium, too.
Robert’s senior project was on law enforcement. He is also part of the
Law and Justice Program at school. As part of the Law and Justice Pro-
gram he got to see many different facets of Fresno County. He toured
the courts, the jail and even the coroner’s office. He especially enjoyed
the K-9 unit presentation and hopes to someday be a K-9 officer. In
May, the Law and Justice Program participated in the Stop, Think, and
Live program. This is a program designed to detour people from driving
while drinking, texting, or smoking marijuana. Robert did a number of
presentations on the problems of marijuana usage on driving. He also
was a fireman in the mock-up of a drunk driving accident that they did.
It culminated in an all night activity held at the school which involved
various presentations, games and food. The kids attending signed a pact
not to drive while drinking, texting, or smoking. Robert was part of the
leadership for that.
Robert plans on attending Willow International Community College in
the fall. He plans on getting his associate degree in criminology, after
which he will either attend the Police Academy or transfer to Fresno
State. He also plans to study auto mechanics.
Claire Johnson is graduating from Washington Union High School as
Valedictorian. Through out the years she has been involved in volleyball
and softball. She also was part of student government and Link Crew.
She will be attending Cal Poly San Luis Obispo in the fall.
Journey
It seems to be a season of transitions.
The kids are graduating from school. Even if that is just from 3rd to 4th
grade, that comfort level is about to be upended again. The bigger transi-
tions, I suppose are from high school to college and college to job. I'm
sure there are those for whom it's no big deal but, both all of these were
big deals for me.
This time of year also has an increase in the transition from unmarried to
married. We have one making that transition in a couple of weeks. It's a
big deal going from, me first to what's best for us. There is a lot of poten-
tial for uncertainty in that step.
Then kids happen and if you have one you know that transition from run-
ning out the door at a moments notice to making sure you have all 200
pounds of equipment for that 10 pound baby - another huge change of
focus.
How about the transition from not having cancer to having cancer! That
one's fresh in my mind. You really have to stop and reevaluate every-
thing and hit reset.
Coming up for me within the next year is the transition from working to
retired. That will be a big one for me and frankly very scary. I've turned
into the same driveway in west Fresno for almost 43 years. Big transi-
tion.
For some of you going from being a wedded partner to a widow or wid-
ower, I can't even imagine. And how about from being independent to
having even your basic bodily needs cared for.
We always seem to be in transition! Someone said - the only thing that
never changes is change. And being a pure bred Dane I can tell you I just
don't like change.
Wait a minute there is one other thing that never changes. He is the same
yesterday today and tomorrow. From the beginning to the end, the
same. Through all the transitions and changes in life, God in the Spirit,
loves us always. Unconditionally. Forever. Even our church's name pro-
claims it, Immanuel, God with us!
When we pass through life's changes, let God embrace you in his loving
arms. It's made the difference in my life and it will in yours. You're not
alone, accept His love.
Love, John.
Sympathy Love and Prayers
Murray Johnson, former pastor at Immanuel from 1975-1983, passed
away on May 3 surrounded by his wife and 4 children. He was 89. Mur-
ray was born and raised in Irene, SD. After serving in the Air Force he
attended Augustana College in Sioux Fall, SD and then Luther Theologi-
cal Seminary. Following his ordination in June 1954, Murray faithfully
served congregations in Kelliher and Stephen, MN; Santee, Rancho Cor-
dova, and Fresno, CA; and Sun City, AZ, for 37 years.
After retiring in 1991, he and Marguerite enjoyed traveling in their RV,
visiting 48 states, and eventually spending summers at Star Valley Ranch
in Wyoming. Murray loved people and a highlight for him in the last 10
years was volunteering at the Lutheran Thrift shop.
He will be remembered for his beautiful smile and gentle manner. He is
survived by his loving wife, Marguerite; children, Julie (Steven) Tofte-
land, Joyce Johnson, Sandra (Jon) Marthedal, and Sam Johnson; 7 grand-
children , and 2 great-grandchildren.

Family Camp 2014
July 23-27th
Immanuel is planning another annual Family Camp trip. It will
begin Wednesday July 23 and end on Sunday July 27th at Loggers Flat
Group Campground in the Sequoia National Forrest. Please sign up
on the bulletin board in the church entryway if you are planning
on attending so that we know when to expect
you. Everyone is welcome, it’ s a wonderful way
to build friendships. Hume Lake was built to sup-
port a one-time commercial logging operation,
and sits in the Kings River Watershed, a region of
the Sierra Nevada Mountains. If you would like
more information about the campsite log on to the
website at: www.recreation.gov and search for
Logger Flat Group Sequoia National Forrest. It’s
always tricky to reserve the space for the fol-
lowing year. If you are interested in helping with that task please
call the church office at 237-7909.
Jams or Jellies for Country Store
If you like to can preserves please remember to make an
extra batch for our Country Store at the Smorgasbord. We
would also love to include any canned fruit, vegetables, syrup,
pickles, olives, salsa, etc.
Thank You Immanuel
Thank you to everyone in the prayer group who have been praying for
me. Also thanks to everyone who sent notes of encouragement via e-
mail and cards by mail. I am so grateful to all of you. The eye drops my
doctor prescribed this last time worked too.
Our prayers have been answered. My last eye doctor visit was very en-
couraging. The pressure in my eyes has gone down significantly. In fact,
I will not be needing glaucoma surgery at this time. There's nothing to
be done for the optic nerve damage but hopefully it will not worsen. I
am scheduled for cataract surgery on my first eye on June 16th. I'm
looking forward to that! It will be nice to get some glasses that really do
some good.
It's wonderful to be amongst my church family knowing you pray for
me and care for me.
God's peace,
Joan Wynn

ities/events from
the last few years -
please drop them
off at the office. We
may use them for
the activity pages
at the beginning of
our new directory.
We can’t promise
to return them, so
be sure to keep a
copy!
Upcoming High School
Youth Activities!
The weather is getting nicer and it’s time to get some sun! The next
youth event will be on Sunday June 8th from 4:00-6:00PM! We will be
having an afternoon of jumbo board games on the Immanuel Lawn
across the street from the church. Bring comfy clothes and shoes you
can be active in.
Now that the school year is coming to a close, is it time to celebrate our
Graduating High School Seniors!! I would like to invite the families of
all high school graduates to our End of the Year Swim Party on Sunday,
June 22nd from 1-3:30PM at the Mike and Laura Nielsen’s home. We
will have food, swimming and a time for families to offer words of en-
couragement to their graduate. The Nielsen’s address is 10064 E. Ad-
ams Ave. Fowler, CA. 93625. If you need directions please contact Al-
lyson at (559) 708-9826 or Laura at (559) 917-7981.
As always if you have any questions, please feel free to contact Allyson!
NALC News
The Convocations and Theological Conference will be at The Citadel.
“Standing With...to Withstand” will be the theme for the 2014 Convoca-
tion of the North American Lutheran Church July 24-25 in Charleston,
S.C. The theme is based on Ephesians 6:10-20, where St. Paul describes
the whole armor of God, encouraging followers of Jesus to “put on the
whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day.”
The Convocation will focus on the persecution of Christians throughout
the world, and our hope to “stand with” these disciples as they witness
to the Gospel of Jesus Christ, in spite of opposition and, in some places,
suffering.
Trustees Report
The work around the church never ends, just flows steady. Currently we
are still saving money to repair the roof on the sanctuary and the social
hall. Currently we have saved $15,761.00, we are about a third of the
way to our goal. The new sign was hung on Grace Hall and we continue
to use and improve our buildings as needed. Thank you to everyone for
your support and your donations towards the church and parsonage.
Special thanks to Tom Britter who managed the replacement fence
project on the parsonage. Pastor Kris and Jenn are very grateful.
