I hope everyone enjoyed the holiday season with their loved ones. I’d like to thank the officers, board, and all the committee chairs for working so hard over 2014. Our chapter had a successful year with many of our events taking on a charitable cause.

In the past months, we have contributed funds to over 25 charities. We increased our support for the COAP program, assisted Island Harvest with our Ellen Gordon Run/Walk, held a successful blood drive, interacted with young students at our Mentor-a-Student Night, and raised money for We Care in conjunction with the Nassau Academy Bar. Thanks to all for making these events and our other meetings so successful.

On January 14th, we’ll have our annual CPA Ethics Update, in conjunction with our managing partners’ meeting, to be held at The Chateau Briand in Carle Place. The Nassau Chapter All Day Estate and Personal Financial Planning Conference will be held on January 17th at the Long Island Marriott in Uniondale. Our joint Nassau/Suffolk Bankers’ Meeting will be held at The Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury on January 29th. Year after year, this event has proven to be one of our most popular networking opportunities.

MEMBER PROFILE: Kristina Albarella

MEMBER PROFILE

If there was one person who influenced Kristina Albarella to become an accountant, it would be Sister Judy Olsen, who was her accounting teacher at Molloy College. “I attended Molloy with the dreams of becoming a Special Education teacher,” she explained. “In my second year, I needed a course to fill my schedule and decided to take Accounting 101. I was immediately drawn to the subject and loved how everything seemed to always ‘balance,’ which fit right in with my over-analytical side.”

Kristina works at Marcum LLP in Melville as a Senior Manager in the firm’s Corporate Tax Department and Chair of its Marketing Committee for Melville tax management. As a corporate tax accountant, she is involved in audits as a reviewer of tax provisions for SEC disclosures. Kristina effectively represents clients with federal and state audits, as well as clients with international operations within the retail and service provider industries. In addition, she advises companies with corporate restructurings, acquisitions and liquidations. Her areas of expertise include ASC 740/FIN 48 analyses, financial statement disclosures, corporate compliance consulting and research, transfer pricing and tax representation.

Most recently, Kristina has worked with Tim Larson, an International Partner at Marcum’s New York City office, and other Marcum employees across the U.S. to develop her expertise in the International Tax arena. “This has been one of the hottest areas of taxation, with both business and national news outlets regularly reporting on corporate inversions as a means to achieve reductions in a company’s overall effective tax rate,” she said.

Kristina has more than 20 years of public and private accounting experience. Before joining Marcum in 2008, she was principal tax advisor for an international public company and, prior to that, she spent eleven years as a senior tax manager with a “Big Four” accounting firm.

Throughout her career, she learned the importance of building professional relationships with clients and others in the accounting field and being yourself.

“The quality of relationships that we establish with our clients and colleagues will determine our success in this business,” Kristina said. “I learned that being myself is best, especially being trustworthy, whether with a CFO of a major corporation or with my new colleagues. Even in the business world, I quickly learned that we are all human, we make mistakes and we all have good days and bad days.”

In May 2014, Kristina was inducted as a member of the executive board of the NYSSCPA-Nassau Chapter. “I consider this an honor and am truly grateful to have the opportunity to collaborate with some of the best leaders in the profession,” she said. She has also been a co-chair of the Attorney & Accountants Committee for the last several years.

On November 25, 2014, the committee held its annual “Neturkeying” event, in which accountants and attorneys had the opportunity to network while supporting charitable causes. Each year, the proceeds from the event’s sponsors have been donated to charities designated by NYSSCPA-Nassau and the Nassau County Bar Association. The committee also collected non-perishable food items, which were donated to Island Harvest. Since the event began four years ago, participation has more than doubled.

Kristina became involved in the Nassau chapter when she started to attend the events in support of Ron Finkelstein, Marcum’s partner with the Trusts and Estates division, who was chapter president at the time. “Ron saw my interest in networking and requested my assistance with the Attorney & Accountants Committee,” she said. “I figured I had to join the chapter since I would be co-chairing the committee.”

By joining the chapter, Kristina said, she has built relationships that have resulted in her bringing in business for her firm, as well as referring business to other practitioners. “Involvement with the chapter opens yourself and your firm to others within the accounting profession as well as professionals within the legal, valuation, finance and real estate fields. Maintaining solid relationships and nurturing new relationships is an ongoing process that is an integral part of both our professional careers and our personal lives.”

In addition to her work with the NYSSCPA Nassau Chapter, she is active in her church, Christ The King, in Commack. She serves as a lector, a wedding rehearsal coordinator and welcoming ambassador to new parishioners. She is also financial secretary of the Commack Court of the Catholic Daughters of America. “With the work/life balance Marcum LLP provides for me, I am also able to volunteer at my son’s school,” she said. “This, to me, is the most invaluable benefit of my career.”

While working at Marcum and serving on the NYSSCPA-Nassau board and the Attorney & Accountants Committee, Kristina is currently pursuing her Master’s of Science degree in Taxation at Hofstra University. She suggests that aspiring accountants study for the CPA exam as early as they are able to sit, if not before, because they may not be able to do so when the “busy season” comes. She also advises them to obtain their MS or MBA degree in the five-year program, provided they have the time and the money.

But the most important piece of advice she offers new accountants is that hard work pays off. “There are so many avenues your expertise can take you,” she said. “If you work hard for a national public accounting firm, you will get the experience and skill set that can drive you in the direction you desire years down the road.”

She has also learned that accounting is about more than numbers; it is also about people. “While often wondering if being an accountant would be self-fulfilling, I now know that being an accountant provides so many opportunities to give back to others, whether by teaching staff and clients, being active in NYSSCPA-Nassau events which promote charitable giving or allowing my skills to be utilized for local commitments in the community.”

COMMITTEE SPOTLIGHT

The Small Firm MAP Committee is comprised of a core group of CPAs who discuss ways to improve their accounting practices. They meet eleven times a year and, at their networking events, introduce themselves and share with the other participants how long they have been practicing and, more interestingly, the specialties and niches in which they concentrate. This works out for other CPAs who might have the same specialty or niche in their practice but may have a problem or question that other CPAs outside their areas of expertise may be unable to solve or answer.

The committee was formed by Craig Morris, CPA, who has been a sole practitioner since 1981. He believed that a committee comprised of sole practitioners and small CPA firms would benefit, as those in the group learned from each other the obstacles they faced in their practices and how they can attract as many clients as their larger counterparts do. By forming this committee, it disabused the notion that only larger firms could be members of the NYSSCPA. For the first three years, Craig was the Committee’s Chair. All four of the group’s current co-chairs — Scott Sanders, Alex Resnick, Eliot Lebenhart and Ken Hauptman — started out as sole practitioners before joining other firms.

Since its inception 15 years ago, the Small Firm MAP Committee has made it its goal to assist sole practitioners and small to medium-sized CPA firms with fewer than 50 employees in building up their practice, with the focuses being:

• helping CPAs solve any problems that may impede the growth of the practice, such as employment, workflow and paperwork issues

• teaching CPAs how to market themselves • offering tips to CPAs on how to operate a more efficient

and more well-run practice• teaching CPAs to use engagement letters• acting as a resource to fellow CPAs on tax- and audit-

related issues• aid the practitioner in how to bill more effectively• having roundtable discussions on current issues, such

as Hurricane Sandy, late starts to the tax season, identity theft, etc.

Over the past two years, the committee has grown from 100 to 160 core group members. The committee recruits new members through NYSSCPA forums — including the Nassau Chapter newsletter, NYSSCPA email announcements and the Open Forum Exchange — and by word of mouth. New members are welcomed and encouraged to attend any and all upcoming meetings. Your insight and support is always appreciated.

The committee co-chairs have been very active in not only building up its membership but also in attracting event sponsors. Ace Payroll and Giorgenti Custom Menswear have been ongoing sponsors for the Small Firm MAP Committee meetings and will continue to be throughout fiscal year 2015.

On December 19, 2014, the committee held its regular meeting. The presentation was titled “Engagement Letters — Detailed Review & FBAR Requirements.” Among the topics covered included when to issue an engagement letter, client communications required by AICPA, third parties and engagement letters, the scope of services and the client’s responsibilities, and the filing requirements for FBAR and Form 8938. The next meeting will be held on January 16, 2015 and will address “Estate Planning Issues — Straight from the Heckerling Conference in Orlando, Florida”.

We on the Practice Continuity Committee hope you all had a happy holiday season and a very prosperous 2014. For those of you who have made a New Year’s resolution to make the 2015 tax season your last, our upcoming meeting is for you. On Tuesday, January 13, 2015, guest speaker Hank Sessa, a retirement consultant and planner, along with Larry Lioz, a retired CPA; Michael Gaines, a near-retirement CPA; and Robert Goldfarb, a CPA whose firm merged to enhance partner retirements, will discuss the different perspectives that go into planning for a CPA’s retirement.

Hank will help you think about the decisions that affect the years beyond your public accounting career. He’ll help you navigate the retirement process, as well as plan for your retirement… and beyond. Hank is a consultant who doesn’t sell any products. Instead, he uses his vast knowledge to help people understand the impact of retirement benefits, health insurance, and accumulated assets on their decision making and retirement planning. Hank has held over 125 seminars attended by thousands. A seminar with Hank is an awareness-building experience that informs, educates, inspires and brings relief to the anxiety surrounding retirement decisions.

You may already know members of our panel. Each of our CPA panel members has been prominent in our field and active in our professional organizations, representing well-known firms on Long Island. Hank and our panel will discuss the important questions to get our group thinking about retirement in a more serious way.

Our final meeting for the season is on April 24, 2015. Suzanne Holl of Camico has been published recently in the Trusted Professional. She will speak on her article “Practice Continuation for Small Firms - an Action Plan.” She will address the details of Practice Continuation Agreements and will expand on the concepts in her article. She will bring some new ideas on the issue and answer questions on practical applications of the Practice Continuation Agreement concept.

Employer Responsibility Changes for NYC Employers

IN THE NEWS

Over the last couple of years, New York City has been passing legislation which is beneficial to the employee while adding a burden of responsibility—and possibly cost—to employers.

In 2013, we saw the enactment of the mandatory Paid Sick Time Act. Under this law, all employers are required to accrue and offer sick time to their employees. Employers of one to four employees do not have to pay for this time. The exception to this is domestic employers who must offer this as paid time. For employers of five employees or more, this must be paid time. The accrual rate is based on hours worked and there are required notifications to the employees. Recently, in 2014, Mayor Bill de Blasio enacted Intro 295-A (the Affordable Transit Act) which requires New York City companies of 20 or more full-time employees to offer pre-tax transit benefits to their employees. The requirement to offer this benefit is effective January 2016. Employers who do not comply will be subject to a civil penalty. While the requirement is to have the plan in place by January 2016, employers will not be subject to the penalty until July 1, 2016. This law will be enforced by the Department of Consumer Affairs.

The latest to be debated is the “Ban the Box” bill. This legislation would effectively ban credit checks in hiring and other personnel decisions. In addition, as this is being debated, the council is also considering a proposal backed by the mayor that would restrict employers from considering criminal conviction history when making hiring decisions. Specifically:

• Employers would have to remove any criminal history questions from the initial employment application and wait to ask such questions after making a conditional offer of employment to the candidate.

• Employers could not take an adverse action based on felonies more than ten years old or misdemeanors more than five years old, regardless of whether the conviction relates to the job.

• Employers would have to continue to apply an Article 23-A analysis (New York City correction law currently governing this issue), but would now have to provide that analysis in writing to the candidate before taking an adverse action based on criminal history.

• Employers would have to afford applicants at least seven business days to respond to questions about the results of the criminal background inquiry.

This would be one of the most restrictive “Ban the Box” policies in the country.

EVENT HIGHLIGHTS

In November 2014, the NYSSCPA Nassau Chapter Financial Literacy Committee was part of a Boy Scout event held in Wantagh. The night was scheduled as a pack night, during which the boys were awarded ribbons and patches for their various activities and accomplishments. Prior to and after the meeting, the boys and their families walked around the eight booths set up by the committee to teach various financial lessons, including recognizing monies from around the

world, and figuring out ways to earn money. The evening was educational, fun and a resounding success.
