A Message from our Pastor

Dear Parishioners, I recall a book among the required reading for my graduate studies in Liturgical Theology – Amusing Ourselves to Death: Public Discourse in the Age of Show Business by Neil Postman (c.1985). In it, the author maintains that television has conditioned us to not only tolerate entertainment as a means of communication, but also taught us to expect it even to the detriment of rational discourse and reasoned thought. The public arenas where this is most evident are politics, education, journalism and religion. Postman sees Evangelical preachers as those responsible for taking religion into the world of TV. Among these, we must also include Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen, whose Sunday afternoon program, Life is Worth Living, enjoyed enormous popularity among Catholics and non-Catholics alike. These weekly presentations were

both enlightening and entertaining, but most importantly, portrayed Catholicism in a positive light, as opposed to the numerous episodes of Mother Angelica on EWTN, who appeared to enjoy highlighting and even promoting the divisions within the Church. This created an atmosphere of suspicion for those things that she perceived as a threat to traditional Catholicism, thereby widening the chasm between the so-called “liberals” and “conservatives.” Nonetheless, she herself was very successful in using the media and contemporary technology to advance causes within the Church. But while religion made its inroads into the world of media, aspects of media also had an impact on religion, and particularly in the area of worship. Television brought personalities and emotion into our living rooms and into our hearts. Abstract and intellectual realities, however, did not always make it into people’s heads. Furthermore, the media help to blur the important distinction between enchantment and entertainment. Enchantment happens by means of beauty found in such realities as artwork, music, and vesture. Enchantment is essential for religion, because it give access to the sublime and sacred. Entertainment, on the other hand, is whimsical and capricious, focusing on the mundane and less lofty experiences of life. Entertainment tends to distance us from what we typically regard as sacred, as well as those things that have survived the test of time. If we examine what has happened in Roman Catholic worship over the past decades, it seems obvious that the entertainment mentality has had a significant role in shaping our attitudes toward worship. Some of this came about as the result of well-intentioned but misguided clerics who believed that to keep people engaged in worship and to attract new members to the church, it was necessary to alter and even re-define the liturgy, rather than allow the liturgy to alter and define us, as it was always intended to do. What ensued were frantic efforts and bizarre gimmicks that entertained rather than enchanted. This demanded the constant need to liturgically exceed what was previously done, because that is how entertainment survives. We all know television series have a limited life span. When they cease to entertain, they are taken off the air. I once had a disturbing but revelatory conversation with two school parents who were saddened (their word) by a First Communion liturgy in which the children did precisely and mainly what they were supposed to do – be recipients of Holy Communion for the first time. They believed this was insufficient. Instead they felt the children should also proclaim the Scriptural readings (regardless of whether they had training in this highly significant liturgical ministry), sing a song to the assembly, be applauded, and several other elements that would have certainly entertained the adults, but serve only to place undue pressure on second graders who were already anxious about the festivities of the day. I share this incident not to demean these loving and devoted parents, but to demonstrate how widely we have come to expect the entertainment model to design even our public prayer life.

When the elements of entertainment are absent from worship, it is frequently described as boring. This criticism is made by people of all ages and in most denominations. A relatively recent book by Timothy P. O’Malley, theology professor at Notre Dame University, is titled, Bored Again Catholics: How the Mass Could Save Your Life. In it, he writes:

It often seems that what we desire most in the celebration of the Mass is an occasion to be entertained. We want a homilist who can make jokes and tell engaging stories about his life.

SAVE THE DATE!

CHRIST RENEWS HIS PARISH (“CRHP’) MEN’S RETREAT

March 14 & 15, 2020

WHAT IS A CRHP RETREAT? A time to relax, rethink priorities and pray. A time to get to know others in the parish. A time to examine, reflect on and grow your personal relationship with Jesus Christ. An opportunity for personal and parish renewal.

WHAT A CRHP RETREAT IS NOT:

It is not a silent retreat. It is not a parish club or organization. It is not a solitary retreat. You participate as little or as much as you choose.

The weekend will include a full day Saturday and part of Sunday. We will enjoy, food, fun, fellowship and the Grace of the Holy Spirit.

SAVE THE DATE FOR THIS AMAZING BREAK FROM OUR BUSY LIVES… MORE INFORMATION TO COME!!

If you have any questions, please contact Michael Lewandowski at 630-353-4531 or [email protected].

Blessings,

We want music that is upbeat, a liturgical equivalent to what we listen while working out at the gym. We want liturgies that are short so that we can resume our busy schedules. Yet in our desire for entertainment, we distract ourselves from the contemplative encounter that each celebration of the Mass offers. (pgs. 8-9)

According to O’Malley, the “contemplative encounter” happens precisely at moments of boredom – those times in the Mass when our minds drift during long Bible readings, endless or esoteric homilies that lack any kind of punchline, the same Eucharistic Prayers, the tired old hymns sung over and over each year (with exception of Christmas Carols and Patriotic songs that people never get bored with), etc… Far from being something to eradicate, moments of boredom become critical to cultivating a Catholic imagination because they are openings for the Spirit to touch us in new and diverse ways. Boredom gives us the capacity to receive spiritual insight.

To let our minds be distracted by the way that incense fractures the colored light, revealing the beauty of a beautiful God, or to let our imaginations wander during the homily, may be less a matter of frittering away the time and more often a moment in which God’s voice speaks in the stillness of our hearts. For Catholics, fruitful participation in the Mass requires this ability to let the mind wander and wonder alike. (pg. 9)

Perhaps, then, the most effective means to improving our worship and becoming more engaged with life is to befriend boredom and not perceive it as an enemy of the soul.

Sing with Music Ministry for Christmas! Rehearsals for the Seasonal Choir will begin in November. The Seasonal Choir joins with members of the Parish Choir to provide music for the 10:00pm Mass (Solemn Liturgy) on Christmas Eve. Any interested parishioner – high school age or

older – is welcome to participate. This is a great way to be part of Music Ministry for those who cannot make a year-round commitment. Watch this space – and the parish web-site – in the coming weeks for more details, as well as a re-hearsal schedule. For additional information, please contact Jim Susic at 630-353-4529 or [email protected].

Mass of Remembrance Thursday, November 7th

In our Catholic tradition, November is the month when we traditionally remember all our beloved dead. As has been our custom, we remember all our beloved dead with a solemn liturgy. This liturgy will be celebrated on Thursday, November 7, with Mass at 7:00pm. This celebration of the liturgy will include a special candle lighting of remembrance after the homily. Sign-in – to memorialize a candle in memory of a loved one – will start at 6:30pm. Our Schola will lead the music at this Mass, with prelude music starting at 6:45pm. Light refreshments will be served in the Link after Mass.

Media Ministry Volunteers Needed We are still in need of more volunteers for our Media Ministry. These volunteers would help with the use of technology (primarily the laptop and screen) during our liturgical celebrations. We currently use the laptop for the image of the day, plus also for selected lyrics during the Mass. We are looking for volunteers to assist with running the PowerPoint Slide Show which displays the appropriate images and lyrics during the weekend Masses. It is VERY EASY to use: prior experience with computers is helpful, but NOT required. The primary requirement for volunteers would be to arrive at least 15 minutes before the assigned liturgy. The instructions are scripted, so it is simply a matter of following the script to display the appropriate images/lyrics. We’d like to get a group of volunteers for each Mass, so that the responsibility does not fall too heavily upon just a few individuals. We are in need of additional volunteers for ALL Masses. Please consider volunteering for this ministry. For additional information or to volunteer, please contact Jim Susic at [email protected].
