A Message from our PastorA Message from our Pastor
Dear Parishioners, One of my annual reads, to which I am very faithful, is the above poem by John Betjeman entitled Christmas. One of its appealing aspects is the warm, colorful descriptions of those familiar objects and places that we associate with Christmas, e.g., silver bells, holly branches, a wood burning stove on a cold winter’s night, busy shoppers searching for the perfect gift (even if it isn’t so), sleepless but happy children, Christmas carolers, a decorated church complete with stained glass. All these images have the power to evoke precious memories of Christmas pasts that have made lasting imprints on our religious imaginations. The beauty of this remembering is that in the process of recalling these memories, we bring them to life and make them present to us now. While we live in the present, we always employ the past to interpret it. This fact is realized most especially in the Liturgical Prayer of the Church, for when we gather as God’s people to celebrate the great events of salvation history, we transcend the barriers of time -- barriers that do not constrain God. And so the commingling of the past with the present forges a future for us, and in this way the timeless Mysteries, integral to our faith, continue to shape us as citizens destined for the Kingdom of God. This Kingdom, however, is not only a future reality, but is already present in our midst. The Kingdom of God has begun. This is what our annual feast of Christmas calls us to celebrate – that divine life of God (Grace) that permeates every nook and cranny of our world. This is what is meant when we describe the Christian religion as “incarnational.” The Latin word carne means flesh. To speak of incarnation is to express our belief that when the Word of God became flesh in Jesus, all creation was taken up into the Divine Life. Our world has become a Tabernacle of the Universe in which God is enshrined and revealed. If this is true, the distinctions that we fabricate between the “sacred” and the “secular” are imaginary. The ongoing challenge for us is to discover and re-discover the divine life that is incarnated in the world and that lurks among people, places and things, even where we might never suspect to look.
The bells of waiting Advent ring, The Tortoise stove is lit again And lamp-oil light across the night Has caught the streaks of winter rain In many a stained-glass window sheen From Crimson Lake to Hookers Green. The holly in the windy hedge And round the Manor House the yew Will soon be stripped to deck the ledge, The altar, font and arch and pew, So that the villagers can say 'The church looks nice' on Christmas Day. Provincial Public Houses blaze, Corporation tramcars clang, On lighted tenements I gaze, Where paper decorations hang, And bunting in the red Town Hall Says 'Merry Christmas to you all'. And London shops on Christmas Eve Are strung with silver bells and flowers As hurrying clerks the City leave To pigeon-haunted classic towers, And marbled clouds go scudding by The many-steepled London sky.
And girls in slacks remember Dad, And oafish louts remember Mum, And sleepless children's hearts are glad. And Christmas-morning bells say 'Come!' Even to shining ones who dwell Safe in the Dorchester Hotel. And is it true, This most tremendous tale of all, Seen in a stained-glass window's hue, A Baby in an ox's stall ? The Maker of the stars and sea Become a Child on earth for me ? And is it true ? For if it is, No loving fingers tying strings Around those tissued fripperies, The sweet and silly Christmas things, Bath salts and inexpensive scent And hideous tie so kindly meant, No love that in a family dwells, No carolling in frosty air, Nor all the steeple-shaking bells Can with this single Truth compare - That God was man in Palestine And lives today in Bread and Wine.
Page 3 December 24, 2017
So, is it true, this most tremendous tale of all? asks John Betjeman. Is it true that God was man in Palestine and lives today in Bread and Wine? At some point in our lives, each of us must make a conscious choice to believe or not believe this tremendous tale. My only question is, why would anyone choose not to believe it? On behalf of our Parish Staff at St. Joan of Arc Church, I extend joyful greetings to all of you and ask that we pray for one another in this most holy time of Christmas. A Theological Clarification It is important to make a theological clarification regarding the last line of Betjeman’s poem; That God was man in Palestine and lives today in Bread and Wine. While the poet clearly writes using incarnational language asserting that Jesus, who was once visible as a historical person in Palestine, is now present to his Church through the Sacrament of the Eucharist. We should note a subtle distinction, however. Catholic theology asserts that in the Eucharistic Mystery, the bread and wine cease to exist except for their appearances. Rather, they are transformed into the Body and Blood of Christ. Therefore, it is technically inaccurate to state that God lives today IN bread and wine. Instead, God transforms the bread and wine into the Body and Blood of his Son. God takes these natural elements from the earth and raises them to a higher order by consecrating them into the Divine Presence. This theological clarification, however, in no way diminishes the beauty and meaning of the poem.

The Lord is Near Today, as we celebrate the Fourth Sunday of Advent, we know that Christmas is near. We light four candles of the Advent wreath, noticing how time has passed since we lit only one candle – barely three weeks ago. We wait
in joyful anticipation for the celebration of Christmas, for Christ to come – once again – into our hearts and minds. Our music today still reminds us to be watchful and ready, for the Lord is near. Our sending forth song this weekend is ‘People, Look East’. This song con-tains the phrase ‘the time is near’. It reminds us that the Lord is coming, He is already ‘on the way’, and we should prepare to receive Him. Have a blessed week! Jim Susic

CHRISTMAS SEASON SCHEDULE
The Proclamation of the Birth of Christ
The Solemn Liturgy of Christmas (celebrated at our 10pm Mass) includes ‘The Proclamation of the Birth of Christ’. What exactly is this chant that is sung to begin the Christmas Season? “The Roman Martyrology for Christmas Day contains a formal announcement of the birth of Christ in the style of a proclamation. It begins with creation and relates the birth of the Lord to the major events and personages of sacred and secular history. The particular events con-tained in the proclamation help to situate the birth of Jesus in the context of salvation history.” (from 2018 Sourcebook for Sundays and Seasons, printed by Liturgy Training Publications). We sing this chant to remind us of God’s saving plan, and how He has always saved His people throughout history. Through the story told in this chant, we can see the plan of God emerging through all ages. We also see how the birth of Christ fits into the sacred and secular events of that particular period in time.
