A Message from our Executive Director

Dear ACCET Colleagues: On behalf of the Accrediting Commission and staff, welcome to the 2010 ACCET Annual Conference. This year’s theme, A Partnership for Quality: Mapping Institutional Effectiveness, celebrates ACCET's 36th anniversary while also recalling the numerous changes that have affected our private postsecondary sector over the past decades. In a long bygone era our institutions, both proprietary schools and national accrediting agencies were often cast in the harshest terms and after a brief period of golden years once again appears to have been called in question as Capitol Hill and the media have become obsessed with the bad-apple crowd in our sector with cries of indignation that a profit motive inherently taints us all. We have focused on providing quality training to our students aimed specifically at achieving positive outcomes in student satisfaction, certification, completion, and placement rates, which in turn has served as a mission-centered report card on successful metrics for each institution. These measures were not easily adopted or achieved, but your dedication and support lead to the heightened recognition and credibility of ACCET. Sadly, there are those who have fallen back into the patterns of the past, or are under the demands of the publicly traded marketplace for growth where often the primary criteria for success is revenue and a secondary focus on actual benefit to students. ACCET and our member institutions work diligently to maintain the balance of entrepreneurial vigor and educational soundness, recognizing that measurable outcomes that enhance the value of our students as the truest long-term indicator of success. Savannah seems like a fitting destination off the beaten path to relax, while taking a break from the day-to-day grind with some fresh insights and good company. We have assembled an impressive group of colleagues, including our ACCET Commissioners and staff, the U.S. Department of Education, Department of Homeland Security, state licensing agencies, and other accrediting agencies that share our mission, along with guest speakers, exhibitors, and fellow member schools, to provide us this annual venue for staying in touch, keeping current, and looking ahead. In that spirit, we welcome you to ACCET's 36th anniversary event and look forward to making or renewing acquaintances as we join together at this important partnership for quality that matches our words with our deeds. Best Regards,

Roger J. Williams

Monday, November 1, 2010 1:30 pm – 3:00 pm Opening General Session Harbor Ballroom Ground Floor

“Attainment, Completion and ? Quality: Where do we go from here?” Featured Keynote Speaker: Dewayne Matthews, Vice President, Policy and Strategy Lumina Foundation for Education

In a recent interview with Career Education Review, Dr. Matthews stated that “we believe for-profit higher education is going to play a significant role in providing the amount and the quality of education that we need to get to ‘the big goal’ of 60 percent of Americans completing some form of post-secondary education. That suggests a very large capacity problem in the near future. We’ve seen no scenario under which you could take the current higher education system and simply scale up to meet that increased demand. We’ve explicitly stated that we think for-profit higher education has to be part of the mix in getting us to this national goal.” Dr. Matthews has served in a variety of higher education leadership roles, including Senior Adviser to the President and Vice President of the Education Commission of the States (ECS), Director of Programs and Services for the Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education (WICHE), and Executive Director of the New Mexico Commission on Higher Education. He has been a legislative staff member, faculty member and university trustee, and has worked with higher education institutions in Mexico, Canada, and Japan. He began his career as a first-grade teacher in Taos, NM. Dr. Matthews graduated from the University of New Mexico and earned a master's in bilingual education at New Mexico Highlands University in Las Vegas, NM. He earned a doctorate in educational leadership and policy studies at Arizona State University and received an honorary doctorate of humane letters from Marycrest International University. 3:15 pm – 4:30 pm Annual Business Meeting Harbor Ballroom Ground Floor David Wilson, Chair of the ACCET Accrediting Commission, will preside over ACCET’s Annual Business Meeting. This session will discuss the disconnect of the seemingly "perfect candidate" and their actual job performance, style and cultural fit with your school. Hiring mistakes can cause costly delays in operations and put a strain on resources. Time and money spent twice or three times due to a “misfit” is counterproductive and often leads to operational problems from the effects of turnover or cultural differences. In this session, we will investigate the reasons behind why this happens and how to avoid this in the future. Remember, your greatest asset is your faculty and staff. Hire RIGHT the first time!
