Mick Malone is acting as both a

buyer and a vendor at this year’s sale, his workload increased in part by

the launch of micro syndication company The Racing League, which is

expected to secure more than ten horses at the auction.

Kitchwin Hills’ Malone, whose Hunter Valley farm is offering 27

yearlings, does not predict any wild market fluctuations occurring at the

    Gold Coast.

“Everyone’s talking the market down and as a buyer you think ‘yes’

but as a vendor that’s certainly not what you want to hear and I don’t

think it will be actually. I think the good horses will be better and the

hard horses will be harder (to sell),” Malone told ANZ Bloodstock News

    yesterday.

“You’ve just got to be realistic about what your stock is like as

    a vendor and either

    get them on the

    market or realise

    that you’re taking

    them home.”

    Describing the

    racing industry

    as a “crazy game”,

    Malone believes

    buyers’ search for

the next stallion prospect will underpin the middle-to-top-end of the

    market.

“There’s a lot of colt funds getting around, a lot of guys looking to buy

colts at that higher level. How low they come on those horses, who knows.

Is that a $300,000 colt fund or a $700,000 colt fund?” he asked.

“Often those colt funds are high, so you might lose a few guys who are

    under that $400,000 mark.

“The interest from a viewing point is down, but it wouldn’t be down

30 per cent or anything like that. It would be down ten or 20 per cent and

    that is understandable.

“Sometimes a lot of those viewings around those extra ten, 15 or 20

per cent that you get at a sale are often owners following up on a trainer’s

recommendation, so hopefully those owners keep pushing the trainers

    and we roll on.”

While The Racing League, a spinoff of the Mirunners partnerships, is

taking up much of Malone’s inspection time, he is also a trusted adviser

for prominent Sydney-based owners Neil Werrett and Max Whitby, while

some interstate trainers and buyers unable to get to the Gold Coast have

also sought his opinion on horses.

“I have got a lot of texts saying, ‘have you seen this horse, what did you

think of that one?’ and then we are buying for the Thoroughbred Racing

League, so that is something different for us and I always buy for a few

    other clients,” he said.

    AUSTRALIA

Capacity fields for Classic, GuineasBoth the $2 million Magic Millions 2YO

Classic (RL, 1200m) and the $2 million Magic

Millions 3YO Guineas (RL, 1400m) have

attracted capacity fields of 16 runners plus five

emergencies ahead of the respective barrier

draws later today. The Classic features five

stakes winners - Alpine Edge (Better Than

    Ready), Finance Tycoon (Written Tycoon),

Shaquero (Shalaa), Fake Love (I Am Invincible)

and She’s All Class (I Am Invincible) - with

Ranch Hand (Fastnet Rock) the first emergency.

The Guineas will see Away Game (Snitzel) aim

to become the first Classic winner to take the

three-year-old feature a year later as she lines

up for her eagerly-awaited rematch with speedy

filly Isotope (Deep Field). The draw will take

place at Surfers Paradise this morning with

festivities beginning from 6am local time.

Sargent ready for Millions with Clockwise Classic winnerJohn Sargent believes Magic Millions Clockwise

Classic (1000m) winner Readily Availabull (Bull

Point) is peaking at the right time as he heads

into Saturday’s Classic following a barrier

trial success at Randwick on Thursday. That

was the promising two-year-old’s first public

appearance since he won his only outing to

date at Ballarat on November 21, getting the

    better of a ten-strong field by a long-neck. “He

won a trial last week and that’s got him ready for

what’s ahead on Saturday,’’ Sargent told Racing.

com. “I know the race he won hasn’t been the

strongest form-wise for the Gold Coast, but he’s

a really laid-back horse that has shown he has

a great finish on him and he’s ready to go again

on Saturday. On top of that, there is no standout

horse in the race this year. Usually there is a

Sunlight or a really good one but this year it’s

    pretty even.’’

Gollan excited for Isotope, JonkerTony Gollan will be well represented at the

Gold Coast on Saturday and the Queensland

trainer is confident his flagship horses are

in peak condition ahead of their respective

assignments. Isotope is all the rage for the

Guineas while Jonker (Spirit Of Boom) is

TAB’s $5 favourite for the Magic Millions

    Snippets (1200m). In addition, Outback

Barbie (Spirit Of Boom) and Tokoriki Lad

(Falvelon) will be joined by stablemate

Macewen (Rothesay) in the Magic Millions

QTIS Open (1200m). "Isotope was really

good in her heat then in the open company

trial Jonker, Outback Barbie and Tokoriki

Lad did exactly what I wanted them to do,"

Gollan said in regards to the quintet’s trials

at the Gold Coast last Tuesday. "They were

important trials just to tune them up for

Saturday because all four have had a space

between runs. I'm very pleased with how

they all trialled and most importantly how

    they've come through their hit-outs. They're

very fresh and nice and well." Macewen is not a

graduate of the Magic Millions sale but gained

entry to the QTIS race by claiming a wildcard

after he scored in a qualifying race at Eagle

Farm on Boxing Day. "It's great when you can

target these wildcard races which adds another

dimension to Magic Millions day," Gollan

added. "It's really satisfying for Macewen to do

that and he won't be making up the numbers in

    the QTIS race."

83 entries for All-Star MileCaulfield Cup (Gr 1, 2400m) winner Verry

Elleegant (Zed) and Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m)

hero Sir Dragonet (Camelot) have joined the list

of 83 eligible horses nominated for this year’s

running of the All-Star Mile (1600m). Two of

the stars of the spring, Verry Elleegant and Sir

Dragonet are among the 23 Group 1 winners

nominated for the $5 million feature, which will

be run at Moonee Valley on March 13. The first

winner of the race, Tasmanian Mystic Journey

(Needs Further), features in the list, while 2020

winner, the Bob Peters-owned Regal Power

(Pierro), is relying on a wildcard entry to run.

Also on the list are Russian Camelot (Camelot)

and Arcadia Queen (Pierro), New Zealand

    hopefuls Melody Belle (Commands), Probabeel

(Savabeel) and Aegon (Sacred Falls), and

Queensland cult hero The Harrovian (Fastnet

Rock), winner of his last 11 races. "The quality

and diversity of nominations for the All-Star

Mile 2021 has again exceeded our expectations,

with 45 stables from right across Australia and

New Zealand all vying to win the marquee

race of Victoria's autumn carnival," said Greg

    Carpenter, Racing Victoria's executive general

manager – racing. "It is exciting to see so many

up-and-coming horses in the entry list and it

will be fascinating to see how the voting period

plays out when it officially opens on Friday,

January 22. Just as importantly, with every $500

nomination fee going to the All-Star Mile's

official charity, a total of $41,500 will be donated

to the Good Friday Appeal, which raises money

for Melbourne's Royal Children's Hospital." The

top ten vote-getters will be unveiled by RV on

or before Friday, February 19, with the field of

15 supplemented by five wildcard runners. The

latter will be determined by two 'win and you're

in races' and the All-Star Mile wildcard panel.

Russian Camelot impresses O’BrienDanny O’Brien is delighted with Russian

Camelot’s condition as he prepares for a first-

up tilt at the All-Star Mile. Russian Camelot

landed the Underwood Stakes (Gr 1, 1800m)

in September before placing in the Caulfield

Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) and Cox Plate. His spring

campaign ended with an eight-placed finish in

the Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) and the four-

year-old is now back in work at O’Brien’s yard.

“He is very well. We’ve had him back under

saddle now for a little over a week and he’s

very happy,” O’Brien told RSN 927. “Every day

he gets the saddle on he is bouncy and wants

to get on with it. He’s really pleased to be back

in work. He’s just turned four, he’s still a horse

    that’s got natural weight-for-age improvement

into this campaign. He had a really good

campaign at the top level over the spring and

we are hoping he can elevate himself a couple

of lengths. The two races that he will contest –

the All-Star Mile and the Queen Elizabeth – are

probably going to be two of the highest-rating

races they will run for the rest of the season. He

needs to be right at him best and probably a

bit better to win them. But we think there’s still

    improvement to come.”

Buchanan double-handed at Warwick FarmWyong-based trainer Kristen Buchanan

believes she has two live chances as stable

stalwart Margie Bee (Dreamscape) and new

recruit Casino Mondial (Casino Prince) line-

up at Warwick Farm tomorrow. Margie Bee will

contest the Heat Of The Rising Star (1400m)

under apprentice Mikayla Weir, having finished

a last-start sixth in the Provincial Summer

Series Final (1600m) at Wyong on January 2.

"She's a go-forward type mare and Mikayla suits

her right down to the ground," Buchanan said.

"She's such a tough horse, she just puts in every

time she goes to the races. She handles all going

and should be a nice chance on Wednesday if

she can get a comfortable run from gate six.”

Of Casino Mondial, who will make his second

start for the yard in the 1400-metre Benchmark

72 under Josh Parr, Buchanan added: "You

always know what you are going to get when

you put Josh on. He's one of the best jockeys

riding in town at the moment and I think he'll

be a good fit for this horse. We are still figuring

him out so to get Josh's feedback post-race will

    be invaluable."

Heart Of Puissance ready to go againThe Ciaron Maher and David Eustace-trained

Heart Of Puissance (Puissance De Lune) has

been accepted for the 1440-metre Benchmark

70 at Caulfield tomorrow and will try to get his

career back on course so long as the track is not

deemed too firm. The four-year-old, who won

his first two starts before finishing third in the

Sandown Guineas (Gr 2, 1600m), has not been

seen since running last of 15 in the All-Star Mile

on March 14. “He had quite an obscure issue,”

Eustace told Racing.com. “He jarred up after

the All-Star Mile then we got him back in work

in the spring and it took a while to get to the

bottom of what was happening with him. He

got quite an unusual issue with his teeth where

he has aged gums and it took a long time to get

to the bottom of it. It created a sinus infection,

which was such a red herring because it didn’t

appear to be linked to his mouth. He had a

tooth removed but he’s fine now.” Looking

ahead to tomorrow, Eustace added: “We think

he’s a pretty smart horse, but he’s also rated a

72 so we won’t be getting carried away and we’ll

just let him go through the grades and hopefully

end up in a nice race. He’s a four-year-old now

so major stud deals might have passed him by,

but now we’ve got a nice horse and there’s no

    pressure as he goes forward.”

Halvorsen on trial for Lightning startHalvorsen (Magnus) will try to secure his

place in next month’s Black Caviar Lightning

Stakes (Gr 1, 1000m) when he returns from an

11-month absence in the Kensington Stakes

(Listed, 1000m) at Flemington on Saturday.

Trained by Robbie Griffiths and Matt De Kock,

Halvorsen has won seven of his 18 career starts

    - including three of his five straight-track runs

    - while he was last sighted running seventh

behind Pippie (Written Tycoon) in the Oakleigh

Plate (Gr 1, 1100m) on February 22. Having

won an 800-metre barrier trial at Cranbourne

yesterday morning, with those in behind

including Blue Diamond Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m)

winner Tagaloa (Lord Kanaloa), Griffiths, who

is currently at the Gold Coast, said the five-year-

old would be given the green light to return at

the weekend. “Obviously I wasn’t there but

the staff were delighted and I’m told Nathan

Rose who rode him was really pleased with

him,” Griffiths told Racing.com. “He’s heading

to Flemington on Saturday and I’ve asked the

team to book Dean Yendall for the ride because

(regular rider) Andrew Mallyon is riding up

here and is unavailable. The plan is to run him

    in the Lightning next month.”

Long Arm eyes Cups long-termAlso at Flemington, Irish import Long Arm

(Rock Of Gibraltar) will make his second

outing for Peter Gelagotis as he embarks on a

long-term path to the Melbourne Cup. A dual

winner for Ger Lyons before running fourth

in a Limerick Listed contest on June 17, Long

Arm made an immediate splash for his new

connections when winning over 1600 metres at

Flemington last month. "We didn't expect him

to be that sharp and have that turn of foot. It was

rewarding as we were focusing on the second

start over 2000 metres at Flemington," Gelagotis

said. "It's a big thing to come here and adjust

from being trained in the European style and he

also has to acclimatise to Australian racing. It was

a great introduction to Australian racing." Long

Arm is set to line-up in Benchmark 84 company

at the weekend and looking ahead, the trainer

Teams announced for The Racing League Some of Australia’s biggest trainers will

compete in the inaugural season of The Racing

League, with Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott,

Peter Moody and Trent and Toby Edmonds

all set to represent their respective states in

the competition. The teams, known as NSW

Tycoons, Qld Rogues, Vic Husslers and WA

Black Hearts, each have stables comprising

six horses - four yearlings and two ready-to-

race horses, with micro owners buying into the

horses. Steve Brown, boss of Mirunners, came

up with The Racing League concept. Trainers

will begin to target yearling purchases for their

respective teams at the Magic Millions Gold

    Coast Yearling Sale today.

Trackwork return for DunnDwayne Dunn rode for the first time in four

months yesterday after he was forced to have a

prolonged period on the sidelines following a

nasty incident at Moonee Valley in September.

The 47-year-old sustained a serious neck injury

when his mount Shot Of Irish (Canford Cliffs)

reared in the barriers before the start of a race,

causing Dunn to smash his head on the uprights.

He was found to have suffered a C6 fracture, which

specialists said almost left him quadriplegic.

However, the 24-time Group 1 winner is now at

the final stages of his recovery and is delighted to

be back at work. “I just did a couple this morning

and I’ll do a couple tomorrow so it’s pleasing to get

the first morning done with,” Dunn told Racing.

com. “I knew I was going to be a bit sore, but I’ve

just got to get through these first couple and start

to build fitness, so I’ve ticked the first box. The

neck seems to be OK but because I haven’t been

on a horse for a little while I’m a bit sore. It’s been

more than 14 weeks or something.”

Rudolph joins South Australia’s stewards panelFormer NSW deputy chairman of stewards,

Greg Rudolph, has joined South Australian

racing as a senior steward. Rudolph, who began

his career in Queensland and also held the role

of general manager (racing and commercial

operations) for Racing NSW, will take up his new

position in early February. “Greg will add great

depth and experience to our stewards’ panel,”

said TRSA CEO Nick Redin. “He is extremely

well-credentialed for the position, and has gained

broad industry experience, particularly during his

time with Racing NSW, where he held a number

of key roles and dealt with a range of important

issues. He’ll bring a great deal of expertise to his

    position with TRSA.”

Bevan departs Inglis Inglis bloodstock consultant Bryce Bevan has

left the auction house to take up the role of

sales agent and auctioneer with real estate

company Bresic Whitney. Bevan, who will

begin his new role next month, leaves Inglis

after four and a half years, but has expressed

a desire to stay involved in the industry and

to continue to participate on the sales circuit.

Fighting Harada back in businessSocial media sensation Fighting Harada (Fighting

Sun) has not raced since the 2018 Caulfield

Guineas Prelude (Gr 3, 1400m), but the five-year-

old continues his build-up ahead of a potential

return with a jump-out at Colac this morning.

Bred and raced by Peter Creighton’s United

Syndications and a group of owners that includes

ANZ Bloodstock News editor Andrew Hawkins,

the Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr-trained

Fighting Harada burst onto the scene with terrific

wins at Sale and Sandown at two. During

his three-year-old year, though, he became

renowned for misfortune with two luckless

runs at Sandown before he was scratched at the

gates at Morphettville. However, none of that

compares to the dramas that he has suffered

in the 836 days since his last start. “He’s had

more trouble than the early explorers, this

    horse,” Creighton told Racing.com. “Everything

that could possibly have gone wrong, has gone

wrong. He had that first leg injury as a three-year-

old and we gave him a lot of time off, more than

what he really needed to but we wanted to take a

conservative approach. He was going really well

but he had an external bleed in the summer last

year which we think was caused by the smoke

from the bushfires. We gave him the time off

after that and then lo and behold, he stepped on

a toe clip in a paddock and we had to get a bit of

his pedal bone removed that had splintered off.

He’s really had a bad time of it. Now, though, he’s

in excellent order and fingers crossed he can have

a nice jump-out. He’s come up a treat this time in,

Matt (Williams) has done a fantastic job with him. If

he can trial successfully and progress through that,

he’ll be back, he looks every bit the horse he did.”

Immortal Love seeks wet tracksAnother of United Syndications’ stars is McNeil

Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) winner Immortal Love

(Snitzel), who has only just entered pre-training

with the Sydney autumn and Brisbane winter

on his radar. “He returned to John Ledger’s in

Wangaratta for pre-training on the weekend,”

Creighton said. “He jarred up pretty badly at

Flemington when favourite in the Exford Plate

so we gave him three months out and he’s come

back looking fantastic. Wet tracks are him so if

Sydney gets wet, he’ll be going up there and he

could be a Brisbane carnival horse depending on

    the weather.”

Jungle Edge set to go againMick Bell is lining up ten-year-old Jungle

Edge (Dubawi) for another shot at Sydney’s

autumn carnival, with the trainer delighted

by his condition. Jungle Edge, who has

18 wins from 86 starts amassing over $1.7

million in prize-money, is back in work

after finishing second at Moonee Valley in

October. “The horse is going gangbusters,

he’s going better than ever,” Bell told

Racing.com. “He had six or seven weeks

in the paddock but he’s been back in work

for three weeks and going really good. He’s

just a marvel, he’s not carrying any injuries

and the only thing he’s got hanging over his

head is that he’s bled once before.” Jungle

Edge has been placed in the Challenge

Stakes (Gr 2, 1000m) and the Galaxy (Gr 1,

1100m) in recent years and those contests

are top of Bell’s agenda once again. “I’m

keeping my eye on Sydney at this stage,”

he said. “He’s run in the Challenge Stakes

four times I think, so that’s an option, and

obviously he’s run well in the Galaxy as well,

so that could be a suitable target for him. It

is all weather dependent, I won’t head off

for those races if the tracks aren’t soft.”

Bear to make NSW debut for Beer Mitch Beer is hoping former Adelaide

    sprinter Theresabearinthere (Carrara) can

hit the ground running for his new yard

today, as the three-year-old gelding makes

his stable debut in the opening 900-metre

    handicap at Albury. Theresabearinthere

won two of his five starts for Richard and

Chantelle Jolly and Beer, who has seven

runners across the seven-race card, is

targeting the son of Carrara (Elvstroem) at

the Flat Knacker (900m) back at Albury in

March. "He's a pretty nice horse we bought

online a few weeks ago and he's settled in

well here. He was purchased with the Flat

    Knacker in mind - the $75,000 900-metre

race run here at the Albury Cup meeting

at the end of March. That's his immediate

target," Beer told Racing NSW. "He's a

'jump and go' type, ideally suited to the

900 metres and that's the big key to him on

    Tuesday."

Maskiell still sidelined after fall Jason Maskiell will remain sidelined for a

minimum of another ten days following

his visit to hospital after a fall at Geelong

last Thursday. Maskiell is recovering from

general soreness after his mount Northeast

Express (Dalakhani) tripped over the fallen

Slickback Teddy (Elvstroem) in a 2455-metre

maiden, forcing Maskiell off his mount. He

was taken to hospital and remained there

overnight while he was monitored for signs of

concussion. Maskiell, who said he kept asking

where he was for 45 minutes after the race,

won’t be able to due until at least January

21 in line with Racing Victoria’s concussion

protocols, which ban a jockey from riding for

14 days after concussion is diagnosed.

    NEW ZEALAND

War Decree to fly southern flag at KarakaInglewood Stud moves into a new era this

year with the first yearlings by War Decree

(War Front) going through the sales ring.

The North Canterbury nursery helped to

raise the profile of South Island breeding by

standing Zacinto (Dansili) from 2012 until

his move north to Valachi Downs in 2018. He

has sired 68 winners from 135 runners among

those southern crops, five of them at stakes

level, including Group 1 winner Ugo Foscolo.

Inglewood Stud recruited War Decree as

Zacinto’s replacement and there are promising

signs that he will be a worthy successor. Later

this month, the Karaka Premier Yearling Sale

will feature 17 members of War Decree’s first

yearling crop, including nine in the catalogue

for Book 1. “This is an exciting time for us,”

said Gus Wigley, who owns and operates

Inglewood Stud in partnership with his wife

Bianca. “We’ve made a concerted effort to

support him with Book 1-quality mares, and

it’s worked out really well. From his first

season here, we’ve sent half of our mares

to him and the other half to other stallions,

then swapped them over the next year. It’s

all been about doing everything we can to try

to give him the best possible start. We’re rapt

to have nine of his yearlings in Book 1, along

with some lovely yearlings in Book 2. That’s

a great result for a stallion that stands down

here in the South Island.” He continued: “I’ve

been particularly encouraged by how strongly

New Zealand Bloodstock have supported the

stallion. They’ve looked at a lot of his progeny

and have got right behind the horse. That level

of support gives you a real boost when you’re a

    studmaster standing a young sire.”

Ormsby sidelined following rodeo incidentRiding horses may be how Chad Ormsby

makes his living, but it is riding bulls that is

his biggest passion. That passion took him

north to compete in a rodeo near Whangarei

over the weekend where he was involved in

an incident that resulted in a broken leg and a

trip to Waikato Hospital for surgery. “It is a bit

unfortunate, but it is the game we play. The

way it was broken was a bit unlucky,” Ormsby

said. “In the chute where we come out of on

the bull, instead of coming out right through

the middle of the gate, the gate opened too

fast and he ran into the post with my leg in-

between him and the post. Only one thing

was going to give there and that was my leg.”

Ormsby said he heard a crack upon impact

with the post, but soon realised it was his leg

where the sound had come from. “If the bull

hits the post you can get a re-ride,” he said.

“But by the time I hit the ground I realised

the crack wasn’t just the post, it was my leg.

I got myself to hospital and the X-ray showed

I have broken my leg in the exact same place

before. I travelled to Waikato Hospital on

Sunday and had surgery this morning to put

a pin in it. I haven’t had an update yet, but

going from last time it (recovery) is anywhere

between six to ten weeks. If things go well,

hopefully we are at the six-week mark.”

Stakes target beckon for Maria FarinaMaria Farina (Contributer) kept her unbeaten

record intact at Ellerslie on Sunday in the Blue

quarters of a length over Cadeau (Zacinto),

with a further short-neck back to Group 3

    performer Explosively (Sweynesse) in third.

Weatherley, who also co-owns and bred the

horse, admits he got a bit animated in the

stands when his filly started to open up down

the Ellerslie straight under his son Sam. “We

have watched the replay about 943 times, and

she seems to be improving each time we watch

it,” he said. “After a couple of hundred metres I

thought she might be outpaced, but Sam rode

her really well. He drew a sticky gate and went

back to the tail of the field, although there were

only seven in it, got on the rail and then she

came up underneath them before the turn and

I thought we might run fourth, but when she

burst between a couple halfway up the straight

I got out of my seat and started yelling and

screaming. We weren’t expecting her to win

like that, but we weren’t surprised either. We

have had a lot of time for her. She has just got

something about her. I have ridden a few over

the years and she has got a bit of an X-factor

    there.”

Cunneen records maiden training victoryRiccarton trainer Meg Cunneen broke through

to record her first victory when Mamma Sans

(Tavistock) won the Alex Hayward/Noel Wafer

Pow Memorial (1810m) at Kumara on Saturday.

Cunneen (26), the daughter of Mid Canterbury

rugby centurion Paul Cunneen, who bred the

mare in partnership with Eric Parr and races her

himself, boasts a strong equestrian background.

“They put on good days and get lots of people

on course,” Cunneen said of Kumara. “I had the

clubs ring me a few days in advance asking if I

wanted boxes, or yards, or tie-ups, and saying

to bring owners to the Committee Room for a

drink on us. It’s great hospitality, really. When

Neil (Ridley) passed away I didn’t want to

work for anyone else full-time, and thought it

was a good opportunity to do my own thing.

I’ve got access to more boxes and yards at

Riccarton, and would like to build my numbers

up eventually. I’ve got a Burgundy colt being

broken-in and will get him going to trial in the

spring, and hopefully getting a couple of other

ones.” While more than capable hands-on with

horses, Cunneen has also worked in racing

stables owner communications. “Up until he

died, I worked with Neil Ridley at Riccarton,

but previously with Mike Moroney and Pam

Gerard, Stephen Autridge and Jamie Richards,

and Mapperley Stud, all in Matamata, and

beforehand I worked here with Shane Kennedy

    and Anna Furlong.”

Eight for KizunaImpressive young stallion Kizuna (Deep

Impact) made it eight individual stakes winners

yesterday when Fine Rouge (3 f ex Passion

Rouge by Boston Harbor) took out the Fairy

Stakes (Gr 3, 1600m) at Nakayama. Sent out as

the $5.50 third favourite behind market leader

and Group 3 placegetter Ten Happy Rose

(Epiphaneia), Fine Rouge was ridden midfield

by Christophe Lemaire before he elected to

send the Tetsuya Kimura-trained filly off on a

searching run around the outside approaching

the turn. It proved the right move as Fine Rouge

sustained that long run to score by two and a

half lengths from Ho O Ixelles (Rulership) with

a length back to the fast-finishing Bella Nova

UK: 'Racing continues' - BHA and government sources quash shutdown rumoursGovernment officials have moved to quash

rumours that an imminent stoppage of elite

sport in Britain is planned, according to the

Racing Post. Officials from the Department

for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS)

are believed to have told racing that no formal

meetings concerning a shutdown of sport have

taken place. On Sunday afternoon, rumours

began circulating widely on social media

suggesting that the government was poised

to order a halt to sport, but those claims were

not substantiated by the Racing Post in several

conversations they had with senior industry

sources yesterday. The official BHA Twitter

    account tweeted yesterday "British racing

continues behind closed doors this week", with

a list of the meetings due to take place yesterday

    and today.

US: High-class Thousand Words retires to Spendthrift FarmThousand Words (Pioneerof The Nile), a Graded

winner at two and three, has been retired

from racing and will stand the forthcoming

breeding season at B. Wayne Hughes'

Spendthrift Farm in Kentucky. The four-

year-old will become the newest stallion

to participate in Spendthrift’s 'Share The

    Upside' programme and is immediately

    available for inspection by appointment.

"Thousand Words is a horse we have been

high on since the day we partnered with the

Albaugh family to buy him at the Keeneland

    September sale," said Ned Toffey,

    Spendthrift general manager. "We believed

he was one of the best combinations of

pedigree and physical we saw that year,

which is why he commanded a million

dollars. Thousand Words is a terrific

package and will greatly complement our

stallion roster, especially at his price point.

We think breeders are really going to like

everything he has to offer as an exciting

young stallion prospect.” The Share The

Upside fee for Thousand Words will be

    USD$10,000 (approx. AUD$13,000) for one

year. Additionally, breeders must breed a

mare in 2022 on a complimentary basis. After

the breeder has a live foal in 2022, pays the

stud fee, and breeds a mare back, he or she

will earn a lifetime breeding right beginning

in 2023. For breeders not interested in the

programme, Thousand Words will be offered

    for USD$7,500 (approx. AUD$9,750).

    Rosemont Stud will join forces

with a core group of prominent

breeders in an attempt to unearth

    future stallion prospects capable

of standing at the Victorian farm, starting at

today’s Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling

    Sale.

    The partnership, labelled the Victorian

Alliance, is the latest group looking to identify

suitable prospects as yearlings rather than

laying out the huge sums commanded by

owners of elite, Group-winning colts off the

    track.

“Ultimately, the concept was borne out of

the fact that we are really committed to seeing

some of these top stallion prospects remain in

Victoria,” Rosemont Stud general manager of

bloodstock Ryan McEvoy told ANZ Bloodstock

    News at the Gold Coast.

“Like many Victorian breeders, we run a

commercial operation and are obliged to send

a significant number of our mares up to the

Hunter, which is fine, but we are obviously keen

to source a stallion organically and we’ve got a

great team of partners involved to help do this.”

Already this season, Golden Slipper (Gr 1,

1200m) winner Farnan (Not A Single Doubt)

and Golden Rose Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) and

Caulfield Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) winner Ole

Kirk (Written Tycoon) have sold for tens of

millions of dollars to Kia Ora Stud and Vinery

    Stud respectively.

The emergence of the Victorian Alliance

follows similar strategies employed by the

    Newgate Farm-China Horse Club partnership

and that of Aquis Farm, which has enjoyed

immense success with its colts led by Farnan,

as well as Prague (Redoute’s Choice) and

    Holyfield (I Am Invincible).

Rosemont Stud will provide seed capital

for the venture with a consortium of breeders

joining the partnership, which was only

officially established in the latter part of 2020.

While no trainers have officially been

    appointed, the horses will predominantly

be prepared by leading stables in Victoria.

However, McEvoy indicated that some Sydney

trainers could also be candidates for the

    Alliance-owned stock.

“We’re certainly not trying to reinvent the

wheel here with a colts partnership but, as has

often been said, it is difficult to buy a Group

1-winning colt off the track,” McEvoy said.

    “From a Rosemont viewpoint, we’re a

significant investor in all facets of the industry.

We have a real passion for racing led by Nigel

    Austin and principal Anthony Mithen.

“The Alliance model is quite simple – to enjoy

the racing experience together with a like-minded

group of partners who share an ultimate aim of

securing colts deemed successful enough to

stand as commercial stallions at our beautiful

    Barwon River property in Gnarwarre.”

Rosemont Stud has assembled a buying team

led by McEvoy, Mithen, the UK-based Tweenhills

Stud duo of David Redvers and Hannah Wall,

as well as Victorian agent Suman Hedge.

Wall, who along with Redvers remains

in the UK due to Covid-19 travel restrictions,

broached the Victorian Alliance in an interview

published in ANZ Bloodstock News on Friday.

McEvoy, Wall and Redvers were part of the

    partnership who identified and subsequently

    raced Group-winning Zoustar (Northern

Meteor) colts Zousain and Sun City, who have

just completed their first breeding seasons at

Widden Stud and Telemon Stud respectively.

“We feel we’re in good shape leading into

the sale and the team have put in a power

of work to have a final shortlist completed,”

    McEvoy said.

    “We’ve assembled a strong, committed

team of people involved with us. David Redvers

and Hannah Wall, who were coming down to

the sale before Covid made that impossible,

remain officially involved and have been a

terrific help as a sounding board and source of

    research.

“Suman Hedge is also assisting us on the

ground and I have known Suman for a long

time. Suman was instrumental in launching

Written Tycoon and, of course, had the honour

of securing Zoustar as a yearling here at the

Magic Millions. I believe him to be a talented

judge with a great eye, so I think we have all

    bases covered.”

The news of the Victorian Alliance’s large-

scale yearling investment is welcome at a time

when Aquis Farm has shut its Victorian stallion

arm, while it was recently announced that Sun

Stud will also close its stallion operation.

McEvoy pointed to the achievements of

Victorian-breds both on the racetrack and

in the stallion barn as a reason to be positive

    about the state’s breeding industry.

    “The record of Victorian-bred horses

speaks for itself. I have never subscribed to the

theory that top-class stallions need to stand in

    the Hunter,” he continued.

“The last two colts to be sold and syndicated

by commercial operations, Ole Kirk and North

Pacific, were Victorian born and sired by

    Victorian stallions.

    “The phenomenal season we’re seeing

from Written Tycoon, which sees him sit atop

the sires table in Australia, is - I would suggest

    - largely a result of Victorian breeder support.

    BY HARRY TROY | @RACINGMACAU

It’s full steam ahead for Stanley Chin

in his quest for his second Macau

champion trainers’ title, leading in four

winners over the weekend’s racing to

take the lead in the trainers’ standings.

Chin, a former champion Hong Kong

apprentice who rode successfully around the

world, won his first Macau trainers’ title in the

    2018-19 season with 52 victories.

City Gold (Outstrip), a UK import, was

the first of Chin’s winners when he easily

accounted for his opposition in the Class 4 over

1510 metres on the sand under Japanese rider

    Masa Tanaka.

Cherry Road (Niagara), again under Tanaka,

was the second winner for Chin over the two

days, when he continued on his winning way,

making it four wins from his last five starts with

a strong win in the Class 3 over 1500 metres on

Saturday, having been given another perfect

    ride by the Japanese jockey.

Chin and Tanaka did not even have time

to cool down when they took out the next

event, the Class 4 over 1800 metres, with the

progressive Star Of City Gold (Swiss Ace), who

made it three wins on the trot after what was

another fine piece of riding by Tanaka.

Roaring Fans (Nicconi) rounded out Chin’s

day with a dazzling all-the-way win in the last

of the day, the Class 4 & 5 over 1200 metres with

    Eric Cheung in the saddle.

In an on-track interview at the beginning of

the season, Chin declared that he had the horse

power in his yard and was going all out to pick

up his second title this season.

“Yes, the horses have all done well; it’s been

a very good weekend.” Chin said after Saturday.

“As I said at the start of the season, a lot of

my new horses last year were a bit immature

and needed time to acclimatise. They have

now come back better and stronger this season

and I’m going all out for my second trainers’

    championship.”

Taking through his four winners for the

weekend, Chin said: “City Gold has been a bit of

a surprise for us. He is only a small horse, around

960 pounds. A friend of mine in the UK said that

he worked well with some higher-class horses,

but was on the small side, and was on the market

for not a lot of money. He has now won three and

placed in three from only nine runs.

“Cherry Road was always going to be a

Derby type of horse and has taken a while to

mature but now has won four from his last five,

with six wins overall. He just keeps improving.

“Star Of City Gold was originally going to

Hong Kong but had a knee operation and could

not go after that. We bought him for a very

reasonable price and he is really doing a great

job. He did not race until he was a four-year-old

but has now won his last three straight and four

    races in total.”

Of his last winner, Roaring Fans, Chin

added: “He was at a good mark and got an easy

lead so it all worked out well.”

Chin has forged a strong partnership with

Tanaka this season that has resulted in the bulk

of Tanaka’s winners coming from his yard.

“I watched Masa ride last season and liked

what I saw,” he said. “At the start of this season,

we had a meeting and we agreed that he and Eric

Cheung would become my main riders. Of course

I will still use other jockeys when needed, but

I am very happy with how it’s all working out.”

Chin is now leading the standings on 17

winners for the season, three ahead of Sio

Cheong, with last year’s champion trainer Tony

Fung in third spot on 12 victories.

Number Zero (Showcasing) is a horse really

going places evidenced by his brilliant win in

    Friday night’s Class 1 (70+ ratings) over 1510

metres under Brazilian rider Fausto Henrique.

Prepared by Danny Wong, Number Zero

made it six wins from ten starts in Macau when

he powered away from a good quality lot to beat

Kelowna Star (Sufficient) with Hostwin Saturn

    (Stratum) in third.

Number Zero, on his rating of 79, was well

out of it at the handicaps carrying 116 pounds,

as opposed to race favorite Star of Yiu Cheung

(Casino Prince), who was rated on 103 and

    carried 119 pounds.

However, in the case of Number Zero, he

has still not reached his true rating mark, his

connections were fully aware of that and had

no hesitation taking on the higher grade.

A son of Showcasing (Oasis Dream) from

the Keeper (Danehill) mare Karmadini, Number

Zero’s talents are not just confined to the sand.

The gelding has three wins on the turf as well

and is adept on both firm and heavy tracks.

After jumping smoothly into the lead, Hi Hi

Hi skipped clear down the straight to see off

Larkspur Run (Shamardal) by three and a half

lengths, with Contentedly (More Than Ready) a

further head behind in third. Bred by Victorian-

based Chesapeake Thoroughbreds, Hi Hi Hi

was bought for $145,000 from the Princess Park

draft at the 2019 Inglis Great Southern Weanling

Sale by Hall of Fame Bloodstock. She is the

second foal and first winner out of Cottesmore,

who died last year. Winning Rupert, winner of

    the 2016 Champagne Classic (Gr 2, 1200m),

has also produced Townsville maiden winner

Vienna Cruise. He stands at Newgate Farm,

where his 2020 service fee was $16,500 (inc.

    GST).

    New Group/Grade 1 winnersTrippi - The fast-finishing Jet Dark (4 c ex

Night Jet by Jet Master) flew home against the

rail to land the Queen’s Plate (Gr 1, 1600m) at

Kenilworth on Saturday, earning Trippi (End

Sweep) his ninth individual elite-level winner.

The Justin Snaith-trained colt, who finished

fourth in the Cape Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) on

his previous start, broke through a small gap

on the inside and sped home under Grant

Van Niekerk, seeing off Rainbow Bridge (Ideal

World) by three-quarters of a length, with

favourite Belgarion (Dynasty) a further half-

length behind in third. Trippi, 2016 champion

sire in South Africa, stands at Drakenstein Stud

    for an undisclosed fee.

New stakes winnersAnodin - The Douglas Whyte-trained

Savvy Nine (5 g ex Insan Mala by Bahhare)

scored a maiden stakes success - and just his

second win in 22 outings - when he took out the

January Cup (Gr 3, 1800m) at Happy Valley on

    Wednesday. Ridden by Christophe Soumillon,

the five-year-old got the better of race favourite

Glorious Dragon (Teofilo) by three-quarters of

a length, with a further length and a quarter

back to Singapore Sling (Philanthropist) in

third. In doing so, Savvy Nine became the

sixth individual states winner for Haras du

Quesnay resident Anodin (Anabaa), a five-time

Group 1-placed brother to Goldikova, who it

was announced on Wednesday had died aged

    16. Anodin is set to stand the forthcoming

European breeding season at a fee of €7,000

    (approx. AUD$11,875).

Heart’s Cry - The first Japanese Group

race of 2021 saw Heart’s Cry (Sunday Silence)

register a 49th individual stakes winner when

Hishi Iguazu (5 h ex La Liz by Bernstein) took

out the Nikkan Sports Sho Nakayama Kimpai

(Gr 3, 2000m) at Nakayama on Tuesday. The

Nakayama Kimpai has been used as a starting

point for a number of eventual Group 1 winners

in the past, including dual Hong Kong Group

1 winner Win Bright (Stay Gold), Takarazuka

Kinen (Gr 1, 2200m) hero Lovely Day (King

    Kamehameha) and Singapore Airlines

International Cup (Gr 1, 2000m) victor Shadow

Gate (White Muzzle), and hopes are high that

the Noriyuki Hori-trained Hishi Iguazu can

join them after he made it five wins from ten

starts last week. Storming home from midfield,

    the Kohei Matsuyama-ridden Hishi Iguazu

defeated Kokorono Todai (Eishin Flash) by

a neck with a further length and a half to Win

Exceed (Manhattan Cafe) in third. Heart’s Cry

is slated to stand another season at Shadai

Stallion Station in 2021, but a fee is yet to be

    announced.

    High Chaparral - Never Again’s (6 g ex

Rollon Rose by Encosta De Lago) defeat of

Vassilator (Zacinto) in the Chester Manifold

Stakes (Listed, 1400m) at Flemington on

Saturday brought up the 131st individual

stakes winner for High Chaparral (Sadler’s

    Wells). A six-time elite-level winner, the former

Coolmore shuttler High Chaparral died in 2014

    aged 15.

middle of the track to see off $3.70 favourite First

Accused (Turffontein) by a length and a half, with

One Lotto (Super One) a nose behind in third. It

straight to the lead under Yuichi Fukunaga,

controlling proceedings to finish a length and

a quarter clear of Rooks Nest (Maurice). Bathrat

    Leon (Kizuna) was another three-quarters

of a length away in third. Arrowfield Stud will

opening session at the Gold Coast.

Savabeel - Milford (3 c ex Etiquette by

long neck behind in third. Savabeel, who has 11

yearlings going through the ring at the Gold Coast

service fee was NZD$100,000 (plus GST).

The Factor - Lane’s End resident The Factor

winner when his daughter Charmaine’s Mia

(5 m ex Charming Vixen by Bernstein) landed

the Las Cienegas Stakes (Gr 3, 6f) at Santa

Anita on Saturday. The Group 2-performed
