Biography/Historical Note The Oakland Mission, located at 11 Masonic Avenue in Oak Bluffs, Massachusetts, was established in 1895 by Mrs. Susan Clapp Bradley as a Christian mission to help Portuguese immigrants become naturalized citizens. It was also known as the Oakland Mission Hall, the Oakland Hall Mission, and the Oakland Hall. In 1901, Reverend Oscar E. Denniston of Kingston, Jamaica, came to Martha's Vineyard to work with Madison Edwards at the Seamen's Bethel in Vineyard Haven (Tisbury), Massachusetts, and soon after began working with Susan Bradley at the Oakland Mission. Together they created

a place for African Americans, Portuguese and Cape Verdean immigrants to attend religious services as well as learn the necessary skills to pass the citizenship test, including basic arithmetic and how to read and write in English. Following Susan Bradley's death in 1907, Reverend Denniston took over running the Oakland Mission and renamed it the Bradley Memorial Church in honor of Susan Bradley, his mentor and friend. Parishioners were of all ethnic backgrounds however the Bradley Memorial Church primarily catered to the Portuguese, Cape Verdean, Wampanoag and African-American communities and was considered the first African American church on Martha's Vineyard. Reverend Denniston provided Sunday morning services followed by Sunday school. He also held Sunday evening services to accommodate black servants and others who had to work during the day. Prayer meetings were conducted on Wednesday and Friday nights and other social and community service activities were frequently held at the Church. The Bradley Memorial Church was recognized by the Taunton Baptist Association and later by the Massachusetts Baptist Convention. Despite its Baptist affiliation, people of all denominations attended services and activities at the Bradley Memorial Church. Reverend Denniston was the pastor until his death in 1942. The Church continued to operate until it closed in 1966. Oscar Edward Denniston was born on April 5, 1875, in Kingston, Jamaica. He attended Manning's Academy and then Calabar College, both in Kingston. After completing his religious education Oscar was appointed the superintendent of the seamen's mission in Kingston where he met and cared for an ill Madison Edwards who was vacationing in Jamaica. Edwards was a chaplain from Tisbury, Massachusetts, and the head of the Seamen's Bethel, which provided religious guidance and hospitality to sailors while they were in port. Madison Edwards invited Reverend Denniston to come to Martha's Vineyard and in 1901 Oscar and his first wife Charlotte Denniston (-1905) arrived on the Island. Rev. Denniston first assisted Rev. Edwards at the Seamen's Bethel in Vineyard Haven (Tisbury), Massachusetts, but during his first year he also worked with Mrs. Susan Clapp Bradley at the Oakland Mission. Oscar and Charlotte Denniston had two sons: Osmund S. and Madison Edwards. Charlotte died giving birth to their third son, who also died, in 1905. Following Charlotte's death, Oscar returned to Jamaica with his sons for an extended visit. On October 8, 1907 Oscar married Medora Albertha Curtin (1874-1971) of Kingston, Jamaica. He returned to the Vineyard with his two sons and new wife in 1907 and resumed his work at the Oakland Mission. Oscar and Medora Denniston had five children: Olive, Amy, Dean, Baron, and Gerald. The Denniston family lived in the building that housed the Bradley Memorial Church. Reverend Denniston ran the Church until his death on March 3, 1942. Oscar Denniston is buried in Oak Bluffs, Massachusetts.
