Our Core ValuesCommitment - Commitment to provide quality services, programs, and

other initiatives that impact lives both within and outside the department.

Diversity - Respecting and embracing the diverse population of the community we serve.

Empowerment - Empowering our employees to take initiative in a leadership role to excel.

Innovation - The passion to implement new, creative ideas that have the potential to change the face of aging.

Fun - Having fun and celebrating small successes in our journey to achieve our goals and objectives.

Seniors and relative care givers are recognized as a valuable asset.

Seniors and relative care givers have the opportunity to contribute and expand their talents and knowledge.

Seniors and relative care givers strengthen our community and benefit personally by their involvement.

Seniors and relative care givers have access to a full spectrum of services, including social, emotional, educational and recreational opportunities to

their unique needs and interest.

Seniors and relative care givers are treated respectfully and with dignity.

Seniors and relative care givers of all economic circumstances are served.

We believe a supportive community environment is one where:

The New Year is a significant time in lives of many people, as it is the time when

resolutions are made or new goals are set. In this upcoming year, Senior Services has a few goals of our own. One of those goals is to take ownership of our new tagline, “Changing the face of aging”. Many people are afraid of the word “senior”, relating it to “old”, “helpless”, and other negative connotations and images. Our department will change that. We see seniors as active, independent, and full of life. And we want others to see that as well.

A few weeks ago my husband, our Aunt Jean who is 61 and I were driving back to Atlanta from New York. As I was enjoying a nice sized bag of Doritos, I glimpsed in the rear view mirror and saw Aunt Jean looking perplexed. I asked “What’s wrong Aunt Jean?” She replied “I’m ok I am just frustrated because I didn’t get my 5 mile run in this morning.” In that moment I felt envy and inspiration at the same time. Aunt Jean is 20 years my senior. I cannot run 1 mile and thinking about running five miles makes my heart palpitate. She has inspired me to be more health conscious and to exercise more. Aunt Jean runs or cycles 30 miles a week, she eats clean and is in excellent health.

Aunt Jean, along with Noreen Rogers who is 79 and teaches 3 Water Fitness classes at Frank Bailey Senior Center; Griswell Senior Center member Oretha Ensley who is 71 and would have given the late great James Brown a run for his money on the dance floor; Senior Adult program member Ms. Vivian Hammond who is 82, still wears high heels and can spice up a dance floor at the drop of a dime; Kinship Care

participant Marian Tucker who is 84 and actively raisng 5 great-grandchildren, and so many more members 55 and older for they are definitely “Changing the face of aging.”

The cover photo, as risqué as it may appear to some, captures this ideology; seniors are not limited by a natural change in hair color, the elasticity of their skin or the number of candles on their birthday cakes. Seniors are vigorous, strong, beautiful, fresh and capable of accomplishing many things.

In the upcoming year and years to come, you will see some enhancements to our programming and, with your help, we can change the way the general public sees a person 55 and older. We will take a more active role in promoting marathons, bike riding, weight lifting, participation in the Senior Olympics on the local, State and National level. We will aggressively push and promote active living for seniors. Hopefully we will inspire our members and others to become more physically active.

Our new tagline is not synonymous with the physical face of aging but it is changing the culture and perception of how the public sees seniors, our senior centers, and our participants who frequent them. It is breaking ageist thoughts and misconceptions. Join Clayton County Senior Services Department as we embark on an ongoing journey to "Change the face of aging."

Wishing all of you a great year ahead!

“There is beauty in aging we must embrace each step, for it began the moment we were born.”
