9th September 2016 Principal’s Desk What a fantastic fortnight we’ve had as a school! The students competing at the District Athletics Sports last Friday really did the school proud. There were some amazing individual efforts and a number of them will be going on to compete at the Divisional Athletics Sports. All our competitors tried their best and displayed great sportsmanship. It was really good to see the way that all our students supported and cheered on each of our competitors. There will be a more detailed report of results in this newsletter. The Fathers’ Day Breakfast morning was a great success. Thank you to all the fathers and grandfathers who took time off work to come and participated in this event. It was tremendous to see so many people there enjoying time with their children and mixing with other families. Thank you to all the parents and staff who helped with the catering and the cleaning up. A big thank you to Kelly Batson, Shara Tisseverasinghe and the Community Engagement Committee for organising the morning. Term holidays A quick reminder that next Friday 15 th September is the last day of Term 3 and school will dismiss at 2:30pm and the first day back for Term 4 will be Monday 3 rd October. I hope everyone has an enjoyable and safe holiday and look forward to seeing you all next term. Dogs at school. Dogs are not allowed on school premises between the hours of 8:45am and 3:45pm. Even if you know your dog is placid and wouldn’t hurt anyone, some children are scared or uncomfortable around dogs. If you do bring your dog to school for pick up or drop off, please tie them to the fence outside. Scooters and Skateboards Students are permitted to ride scooters and skateboards to school provided they wear approved helmets and do not ride them on the school grounds between 8:45am and 3:45pm. Any student seen riding them on the school grounds during these times or riding them in an unsafe or dangerous fashion will be initially warned not to and any subsequent incident will result in the student being banned from riding them to school for a period of time. Not Returning Next Year? I know this seems very early to be thinking about next year but the DET has already requested projected numbers for next year for the school. If your child is not is not returning to Bonbeach PS next year, could you please advise the office in writing so that we can start organising classes and rooms. As a parent of 4 boys, I found this article to be a bit of a reminder of approaches that I know I should be taking and a reassurance that many other families share my family’s experiences. Parenting the family underdog By Michael Grose Raising kids who find life a breeze is easy. However, parenting the underdog who takes longer to mature or who must put in 110 per cent effort to achieve is challenging for any parent. It requires parents to focus on kids’ strengths, be liberal with encouragement and have realistic but positive expectations for success.

One of the unwritten laws of family life is that talent and ability are unevenly distributed between siblings. In most families there is one child who seems to have more than his or her fair share of ability. Everything this kid turns their hands to – whether schoolwork, sport or socialising – is done successfully and effortlessly. If you have such a child then there is a fair bet that another of your children struggles in the same areas. For these children, achieving success takes more e ort and concentration than it does for their sibling. Just as it is easy for parents to marvel at the talented child, it’s frustrating and, at times, heart-breaking to watch another child struggle to attain even mediocre levels of success at school, sport or leisure activities. It’s harder still when you know that no matter how hard this child tries they just can’t be as successful as their sibling, who continues to get all the glory and accolades from relatives and friends. As a parent it’s important to be realistic about what each child can achieve.Keep your expectations in line with their ability and maturity, and avoid making comparisons between siblings.

Here are some ideas to keep in mindif you are parenting a child for whom success at school, sport and other common childhood activities just doesn’t come naturally. 1 Be your child’s cheerleader Kids who have to work really hard to achieve need someone in their lives whois able to boost their self-confidence, particularly when they are struggling. Make a fuss over small successes so they can puff up their chests every now and then. 2 Focus your comments on contribution, improvement and effort It’s difficult praising kids when the results aren’t there but you can always focus your comments on their contribution to the team. Focus on things improvements shown in reading or the effort they are making at art. 3 Remember that persistence pays off Children who persist learn an important life lesson – that is, success in most endeavours takes effort. Those kids who sail through their childhoods without raising a sweat can struggle when eventually they do have to work long and hard to succeed. 4 Help kids identify their strengths Kids are like niche marketers – they define themselves by their strengths. “I am a good reader” or “I’m sporty” or “I’m really good at art” are some of the labels kids will use. As they move into adolescence the number of options for success opens up, so help them find one or two areas that they enjoy and can easily achieve success in. 5 Don’t put kids on pedestals It is difficult living in the shadow of a superstar so avoid making a huge fuss over the achievements of a particular child – it makes life difficult for those who follow. Recognise results but balance that by focusing equally on the efforts of the others as well. Ken Jones Principal

Child Safe Standards

CHILD SAFE STANDARD 2: A Child Safety policy or a Statement of Commitment to Child Safety Child Safe Standard 2 (Standard 2) requires schools to develop and publicly communicate a Statement of Commitment to child safety or a school Child Safe policy. Everyone in society has a moral responsibility to keep children safe and to protect them from harm. A Statement of Commitment to child safety helps raise awareness about the importance of child safety in the school and the community and affirms our commitment to child safety and expectations. Bonbeach Primary School’s Child Safe policy is an overarching document that provides key elements of an organisation’s approach for child safe environments. It describes the values and principles that will guide us in developing procedures to create and maintain a child safe school environment, and protect children from child abuse. You can view Bonbeach Primary School’s Child Safe policy at http://www.bonbeachps.vic.edu.au/ and click the ‘Child Safe’ tab. Thank You! We would just like to thank all of the volunteers who have helped out at a Farmers' Market and/or at the Canteen this year. Without your support, these important events cannot happen, or fall to the shoulders of a few. Bonbeach PS values our volunteers, and recognises this support through a reduction in fees for the following school year (2017) if the required number of shifts are met: Market – 3 Canteen – 9 Working Bee – 3 Various combinations of the above can be undertaken such as:

· 6 Canteen Shifts and 1 Farmers’ Market; · 1 Working Bee; 3 Canteen Shifts and 1 Farmers’ Market.

Canteen shifts must be in multiples of 3 to meet the criteria.
