THEOLOGICAL RENEWAL AND THE RESURGENCE OF INTEGRISMThe René Draguet Case (1942) in Its Context
DE PRIL W.
On July 1, 1942 the Holy Office issued a decree that the Louvain professor of fundamental theology
René Draguet (1896-1980) had to be deprived of his teaching. The decree did not clarify the reasons
for this sanction. Earlier on in the same year two books were placed on the Index: M.-D. Chenu’s
while a dissertation of a Louvain doctor in theology and student of Draguet, V. Buffon, was ‘con-
demned’ without being put on the Index. These theologians shared a pursuit of theological renewal,
either directly (e.g. by elaborating a new theory of theology) or indirectly (e.g. by introducing meth-
odological innovations in the domain of doctrinal history). As both Charlier and Buffon were to a
large extent dependent on Draguet’s theological theory and method, the Louvain professor appears as
the key figure of a ‘Louvain school’ of theological renewal that – together with the school of
Le Saulchoir – was combated very harshly by the Holy Office in 1942. The quick succession
of condemnations gave rise to the fear that a revival of ‘integrism’ was taking place against a kind of
neo-modernism, labeled as nouvelle théologie.

THE ARTICULATION BETWEEN NATURAL SCIENCES AND SYSTEMATIC THEOLOGYA Philosophical Mediation Based on the Contributions of Jean Ladrière and Xavier Zubiri
JIMÉNEZ RODRÍGUEZ L.O.
The object of this work is the interdisciplinary dialogue between natural sciences and Christian theol-
ogy. It studies the theological, epistemological and semantic conditions that make possible an articu-
lation between scientific worldviews and theological discourses. Based on some theological and epis-
temological conditions, this work proposes a theological method that articulates scientific worldviews
into systematic theology through the mediation of philosophy. The method seeks two objectives:
(a) that theology remains in its epistemological boundaries and (b) to respect the autonomy of natural
sciences. Finally, the proposed theological method is applied to three examples in dialogue with natu-
ral sciences: (i) creation, (ii) human action and (iii) a spiritual contemplation of God’s presence in the
world. This book follows the contributions of two major scholars of the Twentieth Century: Jean
Ladrière and Xavier Zubiri. Our considerations are based on the scholars’ analyses of the plurality of
epistemologies and their analyses of the intellectual act.

POULIOT É., FORTIN A., CHAMPAGNE E. (eds)
• 2015 – Terra Nova 2

IN-BETWEEN SPACES: CREATIVE POSSIBILITIES FOR THEOLOGIES OF GENDEREntre espacios: propuestas creativas para las teologías de género - Zwischenräume: Kreative
Möglichkeiten für Gender-Theologien
BLOHM U., BODO M., GUDMARSDÓTTIR S., KNAUSS S., PAPACEK R. (eds)
The in-between is often considered as a bare and infertile space. To venture into the borderland
between two states, for example, can be fatal; it is a lawless area, threatening and chaotic, hostile to
human well-being and flourishing. Yet recent postcolonial and queer studies have increased awareness
of the positive aspects of the in-between: borders also provide spaces for negotiation, interconnection
and transgression and for articulations of identities and differences. Like bridges, borders emphasize
difference and distance, but also connection. The interest and aim of this volume is to explore the
in-between space in its positive and negative, challenging and limiting aspects with regard to issues
of gender from the perspective of theology and the study of religions.

Under today’s conditions of globalization and neoliberalism with the consequent commodification of
the whole life, poverty, (hetero-)sexism, homophobia, racism, fundamentalism and nationalism
(including right-wing extremism) are producing violent exclusions instead of inclusive ideas of com-
munity, solidarity, and justice. What answers can the theological perspectives of different religions
offer to decrease economic and epistemic violence? Especially liberationist, intersectional, feminist,
and gender-sensitive approaches have proven to be very conscious of these issues and have contributed
immensely to their analysis in theology and religious studies. More recently, postcolonial, post-secular
and queer theories have furthered the critical debates in cultural and social analysis and enriched pre-
vious approaches.

THE EVOLUTION OF HOPETheological Metaethics in the Context of Evolution
KEOGH G.
This book is situated within the realm of theological engagement with the sciences with a particular
focus on how the nature of ethics is understood through this dialogue. Its purpose is to provide a
theological appreciation of the nature of ethics which also takes seriously evolutionary accounts of how
ethics came to be. It argues that such a theological metaethic can be interpreted as hopeful and opti-
mistic given the apparent evolution of the moral from the amoral. This work hinges on two different
but intertwined levels. One is the level of ethical systems: a particular understanding of Western
Christian ethics. This level is framed by another, broader level of metaethics: an overarching under-
standing of the character of ethics that emerges from reflections on evolutionary theory and its natu-
ralistic context.
WITHOUT METAPHOR, NO SAVING GODTheology after Cognitive Linguistics
MASSON R.
Studies of conceptual and neural mapping in cognitive linguistics, while posing a fundamental
challenge for religious belief, also suggest new ways of understanding how people conceptualize God
and make theological inferences. This book, inspired by that research and attentive to the distinctive
insights of Christian theology, elaborates an innovative explanation of God-talk, better able to cred-
ibly address confusion and controversies that trouble the church, academic theology, and broader
culture. The first part analyzes both cognitive linguistics’ challenge to standard theological depictions
of metaphorical, analogous, symbolic, and literal language, and the discipline’s promise for providing
a more satisfactory account. The second half examines six case studies to illustrate how clarifying the
conceptual mapping in God-talk and theological inferences provides a powerful tool for advancing
religious understanding. The illustrations include the hypothesis that religion is an epiphenomenon
of evolution, the so-called “new atheism,” Black theology, and controversies between theologians and
Church authorities.

FULLY INFORMED REASONABLE DISAGREEMENT AND TRADITION BASED PERSPECTIVALISMBALDWIN E.D.
Apparently, people who are aware of the relevant facts and experiences in a belief forming situation,
sometimes reasonably disagree about whether to believe and why. This study argues that such
disagreements are possible, and that some purportedly fully informed reasonable disagreements are
genuine, including cases involving disagreement about which beliefs about God are reasonably taken
to be properly basic, given the facts of religious diversity and cases in which phenomenologically
similar religious experiences properly ground a variety of religious beliefs. Drawing on the work
of Alasdair MacIntyre, it also argues that Tradition-Based Perspectivalism – roughly, the view that
foundational beliefs about what is reasonable to believe and why, are tradition-based and perspectival
in nature, originating in and appropriately grounded only from the perspective of some tradition of
inquiry or other – is true, and that its truth provides additional support for the claim that fully
informed reasonable disagreement actually occurs.

FAITH, HOPE AND LOVEThomas Aquinas on Living by the Theological Virtues
GORIS H., HENDRIKS L., SCHOOT H.J.M. (eds)
During the last two decades virtue ethics has become the focal point of renewed ethical and theo-
logical interest. To lead a good life, it proves useful to watch those who have mastered the art of living.
Living a good life requires exercise, and is a question of acquiring a virtuous character rather than of
complying with external ethical and legal rules. This renaissance partly builds on Thomas Aquinas.
He in turn recovered Aristotelian, Ciceronian and Augustinian thought on virtue ethics. The inter-
pretation and development of virtues and vices form the core of his authorship, as the secunda pars of
his Summa Theologiae readily displays. And yet, the most important virtues for him are not the moral
ones, such as Justice, Temperance, Prudence and Fortitude, but those virtues that are both infused by
and aimed at God: Faith, Hope and Love. These are virtues that the philosophers of antiquity were
not aware of. To account for them, Aquinas had to adapt the classical understanding of virtues. For
Aquinas, the moral virtues come to full fruition only when they are embedded in a life before God, a
life lived exercising the God given theological virtues. By ignoring Faith, Hope and Love, the present
discussion of virtue ethics not only ignores those virtues that were for Aquinas of utmost importance,
but also fails to arrive at a complete understanding of his view of the moral virtues.
THOMAS AQUINAS, «DE UNIONE VERBI INCARNATI»NUTT R.W. (ed.)
This volume contains the first publication in book form of an English translation of Thomas Aquinas’s
controversial disputed question De unione Verbi incarnati. This disputed question is a remarkable
portal into the Angelic Doctor’s theology of the hypostatic union, which is recognized as an area in
which Aquinas forged some of his most original and penetrating articulations of the Christian faith.
In the De unione Verbi incarnati Aquinas presents in five articles material that occupies more than
eighteen questions in the third part of the Summa theologiae. The attribution of an esse secundarium
to Christ, in the fourth article of the De unione, has been the object of intense debate, for it seems to
contradict the account of the Summa. In addition to Professor Nutt’s English translation, the volume
includes the critical Latin text published by Barbara Bartocci, Klaus Obenauer, and Walter Senner, as
well as a substantial introduction. Professor Nutt’s introduction carefully unfolds the historical back-
ground, technical concepts, sources, and speculative claims needed for understanding the breadth of
the biblical and metaphysical contemplation represented in this work; it also includes a detailed
exploration of the debate over the fourth article.

THE HERMENEUTICS OF KNOWING AND WILLING IN THE THOUGHT OF ST. THOMAS AQUINASO’REILLY K.E.
This study elicits a concern to show forth those elements in the theology of Saint Thomas Aquinas
that can meaningfully engage with those trends in contemporary hermeneutical philosophy and theol-
ogy that highlight the conditioned nature of human understanding. The main point of reference in
this regard is the hermeneutical philosophy of Hans-Georg Gadamer. At the heart of this hermeneu-
tical enterprise is Thomas’s construal of the relationship between intellect and will, a relationship that
can be described as one of dynamic reciprocity. A dynamic interaction between intellect and will
obtains in both their natural and graced operations. Hence, the title of this book, The Hermeneutics of Knowing and Willing in the Thought of St. Thomas Aquinas. Some might be concerned that the
notion of hermeneutics will import the spectre of relativism into Thomas’s thought. By guiding the
reader through Thomas’s doctrine of man as made to the image of the Trinity, his Trinitarian theol-
ogy, his Christology, and his treatment of grace, the theological virtues of faith and charity, and the
Gifts of the Holy Spirit, the author shows how Thomas in fact offers us resources for a theological
hermeneutics of objectivity.

Untersuchung.

OF SINS AND SERMONSWENZEL S.
Seventeen previously published papers, here updated and revised, and one hitherto unpublished esssay
explore the medieval notion of the Seven Deadly Sins and several aspects of medieval sermons. These
scholarly studies examine how the commonplace of seven “chief vices” was analyzed in scholastic
theology and used in preaching and in hearing confession. The influence of one major Summa de vitiis on other works of its kind is investigated in some detail. In the field of medieval preaching, the author
examines sermon collections, academic speech acts, sermons for saints, and preachers’ use of proverbs
i n French. Several works by English Dominican authors, particularly Fishacre, Bromyard, Holcot, and
an ars praedicandi, are brought to light. The essays are based on fresh investigation of medieval
manuscripts and accompanied by critical editions of the relevant texts.

DURANDI DE SANCTO PORCIANOSCRIPTUM SUPER IV LIBROS SENTENTIARUM

THE NOTORY ART OF SHORTHAND (ARS NOTORIA NOTARIE)A Curious Chapter in the History of Writing in the West
HAINES J.
The Notory Art of Shorthand (Ars notoria notarie), an important yet understudied late medieval work,
is newly edited here and presented for the first time in English translation along with an introduction
and commentary. This unique treatise on shorthand writing is a hybrid of literary genres that sheds
much light on late medieval scribal culture. Following in a medieval tradition of works such as the
Secret of Secrets, the innovative Ars notoria notarie points forward to early modern hermetic writers such
as Agrippa von Nettesheim and John Dee, the latter having owned one of the three manuscripts of the
work. The Ars notoria notarie relates to disciplines ranging from paleography to magic. It has multiple
identities: a unique branch of one of the most popular magic treatises of the Middle Ages, the Ars notoria; a rare report on medieval paleography and the notarial trade; an exposé of a unique medieval
cipher based on the famous Tironian notes; an eclectic university text bringing together authorities
from Pliny and Aristotle to Donatus and Bede; a remarkable source for the liturgy of Thomas Becket;
and, finally, a distinctive contribution to the epistolary genre known as the mirror for princes.

SCRIPT AS IMAGEHAMBURGER J.F.
In the Middle Ages, writing conveyed far more than information. In contradistinction to the modern
separation of image and text and, by implication, form and content, which was reified with the inven-
tion of printing, illuminated manuscripts made images out of words. In consonance with Christian
doctrine, which declared that the Word had become flesh, letters painted on parchment assumed
bodily presence to create effects of power and persuasion. Painted letters elicited modes of perfor-
mance, oral recitation and ritual action. Far from calligraphic ornament or a medium with prescribed
boundaries, medieval lettering reveals itself as a flexible instrument in which various categories of
human experience and expression – the audible, the visible, the symbolic and the figurative – come
together. Among the topics touched on by this book are display scripts, monograms, nomina sacra and
carmina figurata, epigraphic inscriptions, chrysography and color, speech scrolls, relationships among
author, scribe and artist as expressed through scripts, the anthropomorphic dimensions of abstract
lettering, and the impact of iconic scripts on the reader.

NEW PERSPECTIVES ON FLEMISH ILLUMINATIONPapers presented at the Colloquium held in Brussels, Royal Library of Belgium,

The Proceedings of the Colloquium New Perspectives on Flemish Illuminations constitute an overview
of recent research into manuscript illumination in Flanders under the Dukes of Burgundy. In 1959 Léon
Delaissé organized the seminal exhibition La miniature flamande. Le mécénat de Philippe le Bon
(Flemish Illumination. The Patronage of Philip the Good). Seen in Brussels, Amsterdam and Paris, it
was a ground-breaking initiative. In 2014, more than fifty years later, our knowledge of the illumi-
nated manuscript in the Southern Netherlands during the Burgundian period has vastly increased, as
revealed in the exhibition Miniatures flamandes 1404-1482 (Flemish Miniatures 1404-1482) held in
Brussels and Paris in 2011-2012. The associated Colloquium stimulated sixteen papers, by leading
specialists in the field, presented here in six sections.

THE WOMAN WITH THE BLOOD FLOW (MARK 5:24-34)Narrative, Iconic, and Anthropological Spaces
BAERT B. (ed.)
This publication starts from a particular passage in the New Testament that tells the story of a
“woman with an issue of blood.” The gospel relates how the so-called Haemorrhoissa is healed the
very moment she touches Christ’s garment. This publication forms the first – and so far the only –
interdisciplinary study of this particular biblical motif from an exegetical, art-historical and anthropo-
logical point of view. Contributing scholars interpret the impact of this biblical miracle on Christian
texts, material culture and healing archetypes in the Middle Ages and Early Modernity. The story and
its Nachleben in literary commentaries and various iconographies unveil a particular energy in
Christendom related to ideas about the female body, the role of textile, and the magical impact of
touch. The Woman with the Blood Flow (Mark 5:24-34). Narrative, Iconic, and Anthropological Spaces contributes to all research in the humanities concerned with gender, the sensorium, Judeo-Christian
attitudes towards blood and taboo, and early Christian material culture in the East and West. Its
trajectory ultimately reveals the crucial mystery at the heart of image-making as such.

FROM FLOW TO FACEThe Haemorrhoissa Motif (Mark 5:24b-34parr) between Anthropological Origin
and Image Paradigm
SIDGWICK E.
The synoptic Gospels record a remarkable story about an anonymous woman – the ‘Haemorrhoissa’
in further tradition – suffering from incessant uterine bleeding who, without Jesus’ intention or
knowledge, was healed by his power (Mark 5:24b-34parr). The Haemorrhoissa motif had an impor-
tant place in early Christianity, and from its earliest manifestation as synoptic narrative it developed
into a multifarious motif embedded in a variety of contexts. One of its most remarkable developments
was its transformation into the Veronica motif, the roots of which thus lie in early Christianity.
This historical-anthropological investigation of the early Christian Haemorrhoissa motif hence is
driven by two primary research questions. The first: why was the early Christian Haemorrhoissa motif
so richly represented and did it develop so multifariously? The second: what did the early Christian
constellation of the Haemorrhoissa motif contribute to the genesis of the vera icon and its constitution
as image paradigm and, intrinsically linked to this, as anthropological paradigm?

EXPRIMER LA VISION SPIRITUELLE (XIVe-XVIIe SIÈCLES)PASCHOUD A., SELMECI CASTIONI B. (eds)

IDENTITÉS JUIVES ENTRE ANCRAGES ET PASSAGES EN CATALOGNE, DU XIIe AU XVe SIÈCLEDENJEAN C.

nouvel An.
moins grande ampleur.

as a new academic discipline in the last one hundred years, seek to define the academic goals in the
present and venture to envision the contribution of Jewish art and visual culture to the study of the

LA QUESTION DE LA NON-DUALITÉ DANS LA JAIMINIYASAMHITA DU BRAHMANDAPURANALe Janakaprasna
SMETS S.

SYRIAC ENCOUNTERSPapers from the Sixth North American Syriac Symposium, Duke University,
26-29 June 2011
DOERFLER M., FIANO E., SMITH K. (eds)
The Sixth North American Syriac Symposium brought together scholars from across North America,
Europe, the Middle East, and India. Syriac Encounters offers twenty-four papers that were originally
delivered at the Symposium, and represents a cross-section of both the Symposium and the current
state of Syriac studies more broadly. Although most of the papers in the volume focus on the late
antique heyday of Syriac Christianity, several papers contribute to the study of other, related fields,
including Islamic studies and Middle Eastern anthropology. The blossoming of Syriac studies beyond
church history and Semitic philology can be attributed to a wider recognition of the Syriac language
and culture as a bridge linking (and fostering encounters between) Rome and Persia, Byzantium and
Baghdad, and Christianity and Islam.

arly Society of Oriental Liturgy, held at the Universities of Notre Dame and Balamand in Lebanon,
July 2012. These articles reflect studies on Coptic, Ethiopian and Eritrean, Syriac, Greek-Byzantine,
Slavonic, and other liturgies. The authors examine, inter alia, the rites of matrimony, the blessing of
the waters, and the Eucharistic Prothesis; developments in Christian iconography; early Christian
worship and liturgical theology; new methodological approaches. The papers discuss both the his-
torical practice of diverse Eastern Churches and the current situation. The present collection of articles
shows clearly the progress made in a fascinating field of research.• 2014 – Eastern Christian Studies 22

THE UNIQUELY AFRICAN CONTROVERSYStudies on Donatist Christianity
DUPONT A., GAUMER M.A., LAMBERIGTS M. (eds)
Roman North Africa was one of ancient Christianity’s strongest havens, and there Donatism was the
strongest expression of Christianity. This neglected story from late antiquity is treated in a multi-
disciplinary way in the current volume. The Uniquely African Controversy: Studies on Donatist Christianity seeks to uncover what the identity and historical context of Donatism was, and why it
disappeared. What was Donatism’s legacy? Who were its leaders and adherents? Alongside this, why
did Augustine of Hippo become so embroiled with the Donatist Church? Contributions are from
scholars from North America, Europe, and Australia. They cover topics including archaeology, Roman
law, theology, martyrology, and ecclesiastical history.

DIE PACHOM-BRIEFEÜbersetzung und Deutung
JOEST C.
Grundgedanken in besonders charakteristischer Weise
hervor.

COPTIC PARADIGMSA Summary of Sahidic Coptic Morphology
STERLING G.E.
Facility in reading an ancient language requires several competencies: control of the morphology,
a working vocabulary of common words and phrases, and a grasp of syntax. This pedagogical aide
addresses the first of these by collecting the basic forms and patterns of Sahidic Coptic and presenting
them in a convenient format. It is not a full grammar, but a supplement to a grammar. The work
provides beginning students with an overview of the morphology of Sahidic Coptic so that they can
see the whole of a part of speech or pattern as they learn discrete parts. It offers those who once
learned Coptic but have not been able to maintain it with a concise review. While the work is not
exhaustive, it is complete enough that it can serve as a useful reference for those who teach Coptic. • 2008

COPTIC IN 20 LESSONSIntroduction to Sahidic Coptic With Exercises & Vocabularies
LAYTON B.
Coptic in 20 Lessons is written by the author of the most authoritative reference grammar of the Coptic
language, and is based on decades of pedagogical experience. In easy steps and simple explanations, it
teaches the patterns and syntax of Sahidic Coptic, along with the most useful vocabulary. Drills,
compositions, and translation exercises enable the student to gain fluency. All words that occur more
than fifty times in the Sahidic New Testament are introduced lesson by lesson in vocabulary lists,
which are arranged by semantic field and accompanied by both Greek equivalents and English glosses.
The book concludes with three chapters of the Gospel of Mark, in which all new vocabulary is glossed
in footnotes. Coptic in 20 Lessons is the ideal resource for use in the classroom or for teaching oneself
Coptic. Critical acclaim for this book: “Coptic in 20 Lessons is the up-to-date teaching grammar that
Coptic studies has long needed. ... There is no better way to learn Coptic.” David Brakke, Indiana
University “Layton brings to this book a life-long experience of teaching, combined with the author-
ity of his masterly Coptic Grammar, arguably the best grammar of Sahidic Coptic ever written, from
which the present work is distilled... A state-of-the-art account.” Ariel Shisha-Halevy, Hebrew

COPTIC GNOSTIC CHRESTOMATHYA Selection of Coptic Texts with Grammatical Analysis and Glossary
LAYTON B.
Layton’s «Coptic Gnostic Chrestomathy» is an essential tool for scholars and students of the Gnostic
corpus. This useful and accurate text edition contains a large, representative selection of works in
Coptic, ranging from Sethian Gnostic classics such as the «Apocryphon of John» to Valentinian works
like the «Gospel of Truth» and «Gospel of Philip» to the Mesopotamian «Gospel of Thomas the
Contender», all but one from the Nag Hammadi manuscript hoard. Laid out in a readable literary
format, the Coptic text is discreetly analyzed into its component morphs, clarifying the grammatical
structure at every point. Greek words are annotated in footnotes, and esoteric Gnostic vocabulary in
Egyptian Coptic is covered in a separate glossary. A brief introduction to each work points to informa-
tion on problems of dialect, grammar, manuscript, and scholarly bibliography. Contents (in Coptic):
Apocryphon of John, Apocalypse of Adam, Hypostasis of the Archons, Thunder-Perfect Mind,
Trimorphic Protennoia, Gospel of the Egyptians, Zostrianos, Allogenes, Three Steles of Seth, Gospel
of Truth, Prayer of the Apostle Paul, Treatise on Resurrection, Gospel of Philip, Gospel of Thomas,
Book of Thomas the Contender. Corresponding English translations of all these works can be found
in Bentley Layton, The Gnostic Scriptures.

CEL EN WERELDKartuizers en boeken in Roermond (1376-1783)
THISSEN P.

THE CARTHUSIANS IN THE LOW COUNTRIESStudies in Monastic History and Heritage
PANSTERS K. (ed.)
Most of the essays gathered in this volume evolved from papers that were delivered at a conference in
the former charterhouse Our Lady of Bethlehem in Roermond (1376). This conference was held on
the occasion of The Secret of Silence. The Hidden World of the Carthusians of Roermond (27 March –
21 June 2009), an international exhibition that explored the history and spirituality of the Carthusians,
highlighting the Order’s outstanding artworks now kept in public and private collections. The current
volume explores the history of the Carthusians and their cultural and spiritual heritage in the Low
Countries. It presents Carthusian monasticism as a multidimensional phenomenon requiring a multi-
disciplinary approach that explains the broader historical dimension of the Carthusian Order in rela-
tion to its local manifestations, cultural forms, and the centrality of its spirituality.• 2014 – Miscellanea Neerlandica 43,

THE CONTESTED LEGACY OF VATICAN IILessons and Prospects
BOEVE L., LAMBERIGTS M., MERRIGAN T. (eds)
The Second Vatican Council was the most important event in the Roman Catholic Church in the
twentieth century. In line with Pope John XXIII’s desire for aggiornamento it searched for ways to
enable the Church to meet the challenges of the times and thus prepare a future for Christian faith
and life. This search for renewal met with opposition during the Council and its reception process up
to the current day.
In this volume authors known for their research on and familiarity with the Council’s history and its
reception reflect on the (non-)reception of Vatican II in the Roman Catholic Church. Paying atten-
tion to both the wishes of the majority of the Council fathers and the often blocked implementation
of their decisions during the post-Vatican II period, they make clear that the freedom of speech that
existed during the Council soon was put aside, partly because those who where opposed to the con-
ciliar developments remained in charge after the Council.
At the same time, the contributors to this volume are of the opinion that Vatican II and its texts
continue to offer much inspiration for the life of the faithful today.

THE RIGHT TO DUE PROCESS IN THE CHURCH. A COMPARATIVE ECCLESIASTICAL APPROACHMonsignor W. Onclin Chair 2012
TORFS R. (ed.)
In the aftermath of Vatican II, questions concerning due process were not among the main issues
debated in canon law. Other topics dominated, including participation, the status of lay people, col-
legiality. Marriage was a covenant, not a contract. The Church was a community, not an institution.
A plea for a more prominent role of canon law was perceived as a lack of true pastoral spirit.
Theologians often argued that the Church had to offer more than just law, while it used to be less.
Today, the situation changed, though not completely, and at times with a lot of reluctance. This book
offers various contributions on due process: the functioning of the Apostolic Signatura and other
tribunals within the Roman Catholic Church; an historical overview of due process, covering the
evolution over many centuries; the Anglican ideas, norms and traditions; the reformed perspective.
A final address by professor Rik Torfs, contributing to the scientific development of church law, and
offering practical suggestions to the ecclesial world.

Puisse cet

FAMILY’S MANY FACES - LA FAMILLE AU PLURIELContemporary Family Patterns, Challenges for Christians – Les modèles familiaux
contemporains, défis pour les Chrétiens
DEMASURE K., CHAMPAGNE E., MARTÍNEZ DE PISÓN R., ROVERS M. (eds)
The diversity of family models presents great challenges for contemporary Christians, from ethical
point of view, as well as the spiritual level and the living together. Family patterns are in continuous
mutation which is a potential source of conflict. Many scholars, including sociologists, theologians,
psychologists, and philosophers take this subject to heart. They meet to discuss a number of issues
concerning the family: the forms of contemporary family, the future of the family or families, their
challenges and needs. This book is to promote conversation about the family between secular perspec-
tives and Christian approaches. In three parts, this volume deals with current research in the field of
human sciences. The first part discusses the structural dimension, treating the impact of attachment
theory, analyzing the investigations concerning family separation and taking into consideration con-
temporary parenting ethical issues. In the second part, relevant ethical, pastoral and psychological
issues related to contemporary tensions in the field are processed. As for the third part, it seeks the
indices, the spiritual and therapeutic pathways in the heart of the great diversity that is lived.

WORSHIP IN THE NETWORK CULTURELiturgical Ritual Studies. Fields and Methods, Concepts and Metaphors
BARNARD M., CILLIERS J., WEPENER C.
Worship signifies a wide field of liturgical ritual practices that extend from the Sunday morning ser-
vice in a mainline church through a worship service in an African Independent Church to Christian
ritual on the internet and cultural ritual-symbolic practices. Solid and solidified concepts are no longer
sufficient for the study of this liquid field. This book approaches liturgical ritual from a different
perspective. The first part of this book maps and explores the field of liturgical ritual studies. The
second part of the book takes a first step in the process of conceptualisation and elaborates on the
sensitising concept of liminality. In part three various aspects of the field are elaborated on in six
double perspectives: bricolage/particularity, language/silence, image/sound, embodiment/perform-
ance, play/function, time/space. Part four reviews the road that the book has covered to this point
from the two theological perspectives that characterise Protestant worship: Sacrament/Word and
Prayer/Worship.

MORAL BOUNDARIES REDRAWNThe Significance of Joan Tronto’s Argument for Political Theory, Professional Ethics, and
Care as Practice
OLTHUIS G., KOHLEN H., HEIER J. (eds)
Joan Tronto’s Moral Boundaries. A political Argument for an Ethic of Care (1993) is one of the most
influential works in the short history of the ethics of care. In her book Tronto rethinks ‘care’ as one
of the central activities of human life and explains that it is shaped through politics. Since it is two
decades ago that Moral Boundaries was published it seems more than worthwhile to take stock of its
significance. This volume does so. It attempts to redraw the moral boundaries Tronto discusses
and explores the impact and meaning of her thinking for care ethics as a developing discipline. This
volume celebrates the anniversary of a book. Our ‘author of honour’ is Joan Tronto herself. The
contributions of the other authors concentrate on three domains: political theory, professional ethics
and the understanding of care as practice.

LEADERSHIP, INNOVATION, AND SPIRITUALITYNULLENS P., BARENTSEN J. (eds)
In a world of managerial discourse, measurement and control, leaders and workers alike cry out for
inspiration and innovation in a way that respects their humanity. Spirituality as the search for mean-
ing and a healthy work/life balance is therefore no longer an esoteric phenomenon but part of main-
stream leadership. In this volume, two business leaders share how they have seen the need for spiritual
leadership develop at their places of work. A psychologist and a philosopher explain what spirituality
is, and how it works in the practice of business leadership. Three theologians frame spirituality by
demonstrating the benefits of Ignatian spirituality, by comparing spiritual leadership with Christ’s
offices as king, prophet and priest, and by reflecting on the human tendency to glorify the leader and
how destructive tendencies can be avoided in spiritual leadership. This maiden volume of the series
“Christian Perspectives on Leadership and Social Ethics,” is published by the Institute of Leadership
and Ethics, of the Evangelische Theologische Faculteit in Leuven (Belgium) and serves leaders to face
increasing pressure for innovation in today’s fast changing world.

SACRIFICEA Care-ethical Reappraisal of Sacrifice and Self-sacrifice
VAN NISTELROOIJ I.
Caring is a moral practice, i.e. a practice in which moral goods are realized. This is one of the critical
insights of the ethics of care. The idea that goods are also sacrificed in caregiving, however, is less
accepted or downright rejected. Starting off with real life stories, stories from literature and films, this
book shows that caregiving entails sacrifices even to the extent of sacrificing the self. This study argues
that concepts surrounding care and sacrifice need to be revised and makes proposals for re-conceptu-
alizing the subject’s identity, the intersubjective relation, the socio-political community, and the
role of meaning. Using an interdisciplinary approach that draws upon the ethics of care, theology,
phenomenology, political theory and hermeneutics, this book leads to a reappraisal of (self-)sacrifice
as vital to understanding caring. • 2015 – Ethics of Care 4

HADEWIJCH. THE COMPLETE LETTERSMOMMAERS P., DARÓCZI A.
Hadewijch, a Flemish beguine, who lived and wrote somewhere in Brabant during the thirteenth
century, has brought mystical literature as a whole to its highest point. Hadewijch’s teaching is
most accessible in her Letters, as there it is cast in a mould that succeeds in touching the senses as
well as the mind. In her text, oral and written culture combine to form an organic unity: when
Hadewijch writes, she not only builds sentences with words but composes sounds as well. In these
mystical texts, minne (“love”) is pivotal as regards both form and content – a distinction which
Hadewijch largely overrides. As regards form, minne serves as a catchword which occurs every-
where, again and again, drawing together different parts and sections. As regards content, minne is the key to the mystical experience evoked by Hadewijch and refers as much to the person who
lives the mystical union (along with the content of this feeling), as to the way in which this union
makes itself felt. This edition of Hadewijch’s Letters includes the text of the 31 letters. The English
text is not intended to be a word-for-word translation from the Middle Dutch, though it tries to
keep closely to the original. Hadewijch’s own words, phrases and turns of phrase are transposed
into the English text, especially when these are repeated and do not become a stumbling block for
the present-day reader. There is a commentary to each Letter. However, the purpose in each case
is not to accumulate the erudition of specialists or to comment on different interpretations. The
aim is to encourage a slow and loving reading of the text itself, while trying to avoid any ready-
made summary of what Hadewijch “has to say”. This edition also offers a new, sound-based lay-
out of the text which is intended to assist an appreciation of the creativity of this gifted writer
whose words and phrasing literally make music.

the Song Dynasty in China, and Meister Eckhart (1260-1328), a scholastic and mystic in the medi-
eval West. With a focus on the theme of human intellect as presented in the works of the two think-
ers, this study also explores the massive hermeneutical framework in which that concept is unfolded
in Zhu Xi and in Eckhart. Thus, the complexity of each thinker’s understanding of the human intel-
lect is demonstrated in its own context, and the common themes between them are discussed in their
own terms. Based on a systematic study of the original texts, the comparison between Zhu Xi and
Meister Eckhart goes much deeper than a general dialogue between East and West. The comparative
model of this book, based strictly on textual study, aims to develop an in-depth communication
between a scholastic Confucian mind and his equally sophisticated counterpart in Christendom, in
the hope that the intellectual brilliance and spiritual splendour of one thinker will be illuminated by
the light of the other. Probably only when one encounters a like-minded counterpart brought up in
a totally different tradition will such a mutual illumination become meaningful.

SEEING THROUGH THE EYES OF FAITHNew Approaches to the Mystagogy of the Church Fathers
VAN GEEST P. (ed.)
In the course of the past years an interest in precisely the mystagogy of the Church Fathers developed
at various Dutch universities. Interest in the mystagogy of the Church Fathers increased because it
was recognised that its study did justice both to the intention of the Church Fathers themselves and
to the increasing demand for spirituality. It was not heir primary intention to put forward a rational
reflection on the depositum fidei as such or to pass on knowledge of it as a goal in itself. Their goal
was rather to initiate a process aimed not so much at intellectual formation as at an existential trans-
formation by means of rituals, catechesis and the explanation of stories and images from Biblical
traditions. In this book the main focus was on the mystagogy of the Church Fathers. The assumption
wat that philological, historical and theological methods complement each other in the approach to
the Church Fathers as mystagogues. Consequently the manner in which they attempt to shape their
introduction into the mystery of Christ was regarded from an interdisciplinary point of view. The
contributions to this book form a first sketch of the research area of the mystagogy of the Church
Fathers, as it is taking shape at present.

THEODOTUS OF ANCYRA’S HOMILIES AND THE COUNCIL OF EPHESUS (431)FRENKEL L.M.
A substantial proportion of surviving late-antique conciliar homilies are by Theodotus, metropolitan
bishop of Ancyra. Here presented in English translation, they provide valuable evidence for an essen-
tial and effective means of communication by which councils presented and enforced themselves. The
analysis relates their content to the conciliar settings, considers the conventions of ancient rhetoric,
and reflects the reception of the texts, especially through collections of conciliar documents. The book
clarifies the regional parameters and disputes over episcopal territorial authority in which Theodotus’
theology and pastoral activity developed. Both informed his overall positive and constructive perspec-
tive on faith and the role of preachers and bishops, promoting unity and cohesion. The analysis of
Theodotus’ involvement in the First Council of Ephesus, especially in the techniques used to shape
and preserve allegiances and to defend a view or decision, contributes to an understanding of the
processes of identity formation, seeking agreement, and proclaiming consensus, even when it had not
been achieved.

LE DOSSIER DE L’ÉPISTOLAIRE AUGUSTINIEN: LA CORRESPONDANCE ENTRE L’AFRIQUE ET ROME À PROPOS DE L’AFFAIRE PÉLAGIENNE (416-418)Traduction, commentaire et annotations
DALMON L.

GESCHICHTE ALS ARGUMENT? HISTORIOGRAPHIE UND APOLOGETIKAkten der Tagung der Patristischen Arbeitsgemeinschaft, Basel, 2.-5.1.2013
WALLRAFF M. (ed.)
Wo wird mit Geschichtskenntnissen argumentiert? Wo wird Geschichte für theologische, politische
oder andere Zwecke nutzbar gemacht? Wo wird Geschichte interessengeleitet geschrieben? Gar in-
