Title: Unity and Harmony
Grade: 8th
Grade
Curricular Goal:
Students will learn the principles of art, Unity and Harmony. They will learn how they work together to
create a successful work of art. Students will be exposed to Pop artist, Roy Lichtenstein and his use of
comics as a source for pop art. Using Lichtensteins style they will create a comic strip frame using oil
pastels to understand the technique of blending.
National Standards:
1.1-Maintain and conserve materials, tools, and studio facility, for the creation and exhibition of worksof art in a safe and responsible manner.
1.2-Demonstrate productive, safe, and responsible use of art materials, techniques, and processes forthe creation and exhibition of works of art.
2.2- Describe how elements and principles contribute to the expression qualities in a work of art.
3.1- Compare and contrast how artwork and artists differ visually and spatially, and describe using
elements and principles.
5.1- Exhibit and critique own artwork defending the purpose of creating the work of art and art of
others.
5.2- Compare two or more artworks with the same subject matter but different in media, artist, or style
and describe the qualities that make these artworks similar or different.
Iowa Core:
- Writing: Write arguments to support claims in an analysis of substantive topics or texts, usingvalid reasoning and relevant and sufficient evidence.
- Write routinely over extended time for a range of tasks, purposes, and audiences.Targeted Standards:
- Students will create an artwork that reflects Roy Lichtensteins style. By using oil pa stels toblend colors.
- Students will identify and demonstrate unity/harmony within their piece and in their critiques.- Students will be able to demonstrate various elements and principles of art within their artwork
as well as using them to describe in their critiques.

Day 1:
Warm up: Describe Lichtenstein
Intro:
Discuss:
Roy Lichtenstein- Harmony/Unity-
o What does this term mean?o Where do you see this in the image?
Explain:
They will use a comic strip example to reproduce using Lichtensteins style. Step 1- draw scene from comic stip. Step two- add color with oil pastels. Demonstrate how to blend and apply dots.
Day 2:
Warm up: Describe comic strip image
Work time: Step 1
Day 3:
Warm up: Compare
Work time: Step 1 and 2
Day 4:
Warm up: Contrast
Work time: step 2
Day 5:
Warm up: art critique
Work Time: finish up project.
