On-Deck CircleSeventh-Inning Stretch

• The Dolphins went 1-2 in a week-end series at Georgia State, drop-ping the first two contests before salvaging the second game of Sat-urday’s doubleheader. JU plated a pair in the top of the ninth of game three’s 5-3 win, after the Panthers knotted the game in the seventh.

• Three JU pitchers recorded career-highs in strikeouts last week. First, it was freshman RHP Austin Temple, who fanned six in 2.1 innings of relief on Tuesday at Bethune-Cookman. Then on Sat-urday, RHP Mike Cassala threw six innings in a start at Georgia State, striking out eight, before he was relieved by freshman RHP Chris Mauloni, who earned his first career win in 2.1 of scoreless relief and K’d four.

• Sam Armstrong came alive, smack-ing a ground-rule double on Tues-day for his first hit of the season and clubbed three total doubles this week, amounting seven hits over the four games.

• Mauloni still has a perfect 0.00 ERA after his third appearance of the season Saturday night. He has now thrown 5.2 scoreless innings in relief, and has registered two saves and a win.

• Senior pitchers Spencer Stockton and Matt Meyer both made their season debuts this weekend. RHP Stockton struck out two and al-lowed just one hit in two scoreless innings of relief on Friday, while LHP Meyer allowed two runs on one hit in one inning Saturday.

• 1B Angel Camacho finished the week with four RBI, including his first game-winning run batted in, which came in the top of the ninth on Saturday at Georgia State. A pop-up in the infield deflected off the second base bag into shallow left, scoring Chris Lehane for what ended resulted in the game-winning score.

• JU has used six different batting orders through the first seven games of the season, keeping the first four batters the same in each contest.

Santana Slings in Starting DebutSophomore RHP Tyler Santana earned ASUN Picher of the Week on Feb. 19 after he went seven innings, allowing just one hit and one run while striking out a career high seven in earning the win in his collegiate starting debut against #22 West Virginia on Saturday, Feb. 17.

2017 Was Mean and GreenJacksonville University baseball entered its 2018 campaign looking to ride off the momentum of a Championship Game appearance. The Dolphins return to the diamond after claiming the ASUN Conference Regular Season Title for the third time since joining the league, and the first since 2006. The team’s 36-24 mark under first-year Head Coach Chris Hayes was its best since 2011.

No Love LostThe Dolphins are returning 25 letterwinners from last season, after losing just six players from their 2017 roster. This includes seven starters, 15 position players, 10 pitchers, and seven players who received ASUN Conference postseason honors.

Green HayesAfter spending 11 years as a JU assistant during two different stints, former Dolphin standout Chris Hayes made a bold statement in his first season as the team’s skipper. The 2017 ASUN Coach of the Year, Hayes posted the second-best record for a first-year head in school history, second only to the great Terry Alexander.

Angel In The InfieldJunior first baseman Angel Camacho received his first career preseason honor this spring, being named to the 2018 preseason All-ASUN Team. A two-time ASUN Player of the Week and a member of the ASUN All-Academic Team last season, Camacho played in 50 games as a sophomore, starting 47 at either 1B or DH. He hit .299 last year and put up a .985 fielding percentage.

Put Me In, CoachThe 2018 Dolphin coaching staff combines Jacksonville legends with fresh faces. Along with Hayes, former JU All-American Mark Guerra returns to tend to the pitching staff. Former Creighton assistant Rich Wallace and two-time National Champion Scott Wingo swim on to the staff with hopes of taking the team to an NCAA Regional.

I’m Ready To PlayThe Dolphins will face off against eight teams who qualified for the 2017 NCAA Tournament. Two of those teams (#1 Florida & #4 Florida State) currently sit in the D1Baseball.com Top-25 Poll.

Scouting The Seminoles

Florida State enters the mid-week tilt as the No. 4 team in the nation, moving up one spot in the latest top-25 poll. The Seminoles maintained a perfect record over the weekend, completing a three-game sweep of Troy to improve to 7-0. FSU stands alongside 12 other undefeated teams in college baseball.

FSU looks to build off a 46-23 mark in 2017, which included an ACC Tourna-ment Title and the club’s first trip to the College World Series since 2012. The team returns 19 letterwinners (9 position players & 10 pitchers) from its previous campaign.

Coaching Staff Head Coach Chris Hayes (Second Year) Assistant Coach / Recruiting Coordinator Rich Wallace (First Year)Assistant Coach / Pitching Mark Guerra (Second Year)Volunteer Assistant Coach Scott Wingo (First Year)Director of Operations Ryan Quintero (First Year)Trainer Bo Owens

Chris Hayes enters his second year the head coach of the Dolphins. Hayes begins his sophomore season as skipper following a successful first-year campaign, leading JU to its first ASUN regular-season title in over a decade.

Hayes guided the Dolphins to a 36-24 record in 2017, leading the team to the ASUN Tournament Championship game. JU picked up wins against six NCAA Tournament participants, including a 3-2 home victory over eventual national champion Florida. The campaign also included a 13 game winning streak from April 1-22, the program’s longest in 26 years.

In Hayes’ first season the Dolphins had three players who recieved weekly ASUN honors during the season. Three players made ASUN All-Conference squads, while three more were honored on the All-Freshman Team, and four were named to the All-Tournament Team.

Following the season, RHP Michael Baumann departed the team for the MLB June Amatuer Draft, and was selected in the third round by the Baltimore Orioles. LHP Casey Kulina later signed with the Arizona Diamondbacks organization as an unsigned free agent. As assistant head coach, Hayes served as the third base coach, coordinated the Dolphin offense, worked with the hitters, baserunners and infielders.

Hayes’ credentials as a result of working with the JU offense during his eight years as an assistant are impressive.

During his tenure, the Dolphins posted an eight-year batting average of .288, scored 5.95 runs per game and averaged 78 stolen bases per season and his work with the infield produced an average .964 fielding percentage.

In addition to the on-field statistical performance, Hayes mentored four All-Americans, two freshman All-Americans, 19 Atlantic Sun Conference selections, 12 ASUN All Freshman team selections, three ASUN Player/Pitcher of the Year award winners. Nineteen Dolphins signed Major League Baseball contracts.

A 1995 graduate of Jacksonville University, Hayes was previously on staff from 2003-08 before taking over the Seminole State College of Florida program as Head Coach for five seasons from 2009-2013. He brings to the JU program 15 years of coaching and nine years of playing experience at the collegiate and professional levels.

In 2013, Hayes returned to the River City after leading Seminole State to a 125-113-1 overall record in five seasons and represented the Mid-Florida Conference in the FCSAA state tournament in 2013. During his tenure, 51 student-athletes moved on to play at four-year universities and 13 were selected in MLB draft, including Cleveland Indians MLB pitcher, Mike Clevinger.

Hayes first joined the Dolphins as an assistant coach in 2003, helping the team to back-to-back ASUN Conference championships and NCAA Regional appearances in 2006 and 2007. It marked the first consecutive regional appearances for the program since his final two years as a player with the Dolphins (1994-95). As recruiting coordinator, Hayes received national accolades with back-to-back recruiting classes ranked in Collegiate Baseball’s Top 40 Poll.

Prior to his time at JU, Hayes spent two years as an assistant coach at Wolfson High School in Jacksonville from 2002-03, where the team won the district championship in 2002 and 2003, while earning a No. 12 national ranking at the end of the 2003 season. Wolfson also was ranked in the top 10 in the state every year of Hayes’ tenure, while seven of his players received college scholarships. Two of his coaching prospects are former first-round selections and MLB players - Eric Hurley and Billy Butler.

Before launching his coaching career, Hayes spent five seasons (1995-2000) with the Toronto Blue Jays organization after being drafted in the 28th round of the Major League Baseball Amateur Draft. He played every infield and outfield position in five seasons with the Blue Jays’ minor league system finishing with a .276 career batting average. Over the course of his career, Hayes made stops in St. Catherines, Ontario; Hagerstown, Md.; Dunedin, Fla.; and Knoxville, Tenn. while in the minors.

Hayes was a four-year starter at Jacksonville from 1992-95, was drafted on two occasions by MLB organizations (1994, Seattle; 1995, Toronto) and twice earned All-Sun Belt Conference honors. He also picked up all-regional accolades as a junior. Hayes led the Dolphins to consecutive NCAA Regional appearances (1994, 1995) and ranks among the all-time Jacksonville leaders in RBI (176), at-bats (802), hits (271), doubles (53) and total bases (402).

A native of Jacksonville, Hayes earned his bachelor’s degree from the University in finance in 1995 and his MBA in 2007. Chris and his wife, Joy, live in Jacksonville.
