Bubba is a “seri-ous attention hog,” ac-cording to Karen Maloneof Beech Island, S.C.The German Spitz rollsover on his back to getpetted and shows all histeeth.
“I call it his were-wolf face, and I know heis happy because he willdo it for hours if you con-tinue petting him,” Mal-one says.
He may just bemaking up for lost time. Not so long ago he was a
stray and on his own. Helooked rough when hewas rescued, Malonesays. He was placed in afoster home by GirardLifeSaver Rescue of Gi-rard, Ga.
Malone’s pathconverged with GirardLifeSaver throughPetfinder. Her old dog,Buster, had died, and heryounger one, Dusty, whom she had found viaPetfinder, was lonely.
“I spoke with Gi-rard LifeSaver on the
phone, and the rescueowner thought one dogthey had would be agood fit,” Malone says.“We arranged for her tobring him to visit us at thehouse.”
Bubba wassmart, sweet and well be-haved, so it didn’t takethe Malones long tomake a decision.
“He joined ourfamily like putting on oldjeans: a perfect fit!” Mal-one says, and Dustycame out of his lonely
slumpOne of Buster’s
favorite activities is takingrides in the family truck.
“My husbandcan't go near it whenBubba is out in the back-yard,” Malone says.
“He goes andsits by the passengerdoor and stares at myhusband, as if to say,‘Let's go already!’ If thedoor is opened, he willhop in and not get out.”
Malone wantedto adopt a dog in danger
of being euthanized, butsometimes, she says, theright dog just finds you,
and there’s nothing to dobut make him or her partof your family.

N a t i o n w i d e ,shoppers are askingquestions and becomingmore connected to thesources of their food. They browse farmersmarkets, choose farm-to-table dining and spendtheir time and money vis-iting farms.
A d v e n t u r o u sconsumers even tendbackyard chicken coops,providing themselveswith their own source offresh eggs and poultry;o t h e r sweigh theadvantagesof buying or-ganic foods.W h a t e v e rs p e c i f i chabits theymay havestem from apopular de-mand forfresh, locallygrown agri-c u l t u r a lproducts.
Farmers are pro-ducing and selling morecrops, livestock and otheragricultural products di-rectly to regional outletsand individual consumersthan ever before, accord-ing to the U.S. Depart-ment of Agriculture’s(USDA’s) National Agri-cultural Statistics Service(NASS).
The latest Cen-sus of Agriculture showsthat 144,530 farmers na-tionwide sell their prod-ucts directly to con-sumers, accounting for$1.3 billion in food sales.
In 2012, 22 per-cent of products sold di-rectly to consumers
came from beginningfarmers. “If they can getto a town or city, youngfarmers want to sell di-rect to consumer,” saysLindsey Lusher Shute,Executive Director of theNational Young FarmersCoalition.
“Direct sales pro-vide the best margin onfarm products and en-able farmers to scale upgradually. CSAs andfarmers markets arehelping thousands ofyoung people makefarming a career.” CSA
stands for Community-Supported Agriculture.
More consumersare also seeking agricul-tural products from road-side stands, farmersmarkets and “pick yourown” farms.
In fact, the num-ber of farmers marketshas grown by 67 percentsince 2008, and con-sumers can select frommore than 7,800 listed inthe USDA’s NationalFarmers Market Direc-tory. Tellingly, local foodhas topped the NationalRestaurant Association’sTop 10 ConsumerTrends list since 2009.
The concept of
selling agricultural prod-ucts directly to con-sumers is not new.
“Communi t iesaround the world havelocal markets, butchersand bakeries for freshfoods and local prod-ucts,” says NASS Admin-istrator Joseph T. Reilly.
“In the UnitedStates, as consumer de-mand for local, farm-fresh fruits, vegetables, meats and preparedfoods continues to grow, farmers markets help re-connect rural and urban
America.”
Fans oflocal foodoften seekout agri-tourism aswell, sincet h e s efarmer-to-consumert r a n s a c -tions occurdirectly onthe farm.
H o w -ever, in addition to fresh, locally grown food, agri-tourism offers consumersthe added bonus ofspending a day on thefarm, where they canpick their own bounty andget a behind-the-barn-doors look at how theirfood is grown. Census data shows agri-tourism and recreationalservices from these oper-ations generated $704million, up 24 percentsince 2007. Farmers whosell directly to consumersare not only providingfresh food—they arepassing down agriculturalknowledge.
Customers demand fresh food... and knowledge
