Last Discourse This reading from the Gospel, we look forward to the day of Jesus' second coming. We do not know the day or the hour of his coming; only God knows. Meanwhile, as Jesus has repeatedly taught us, we must watch and wait for him in faith, hope, and love. In the hour we least expect him, he warns, he will come. Let us pray in today's liturgy for ourselves and for the whole Church, that the Lord may find us ready when he returns. May we not be doing foolish things or be living in fear, but be awaiting the kingdom with hope as we strive to do God's will. Prayer: Lord, I gaze upon the tender branch of the fig tree that is my life and I wait. As the shadows of evening lengthen along my path, I think back on your words. What peace floods my heart when my thoughts dwell on you! In your own good time, my waiting for you will be fulfilled. In my time your expectations of me will be fulfilled. What a mystery is time, past, future and the eternal present! Today’s waves break on the burning experience of your Presence and remind me of games in the sand that are always washed away by the sea. And yet, I am happy. Happy that I am nothing, happy with the sand that will not last, because once more your Word goes on writing. We seek to pause in time, writing and talking, achieving excellent works that stand the ravages of centuries. You, however, pause to write on sand to achieve works of love that have the perfume of a caressed gazelle standing still, that have the sound of formless voices that are the basis of daily life, the taste of a doused vendetta of a returned embrace… works

that do not last except in the heart of God and in the memory of the living who are sensitive to the flight of a dove in the heaven of their existence. Tender love of my soul, may I, each day, look up to the clouds and be consumed by the nostalgia of your return. Amen.

Discurso final En el evangelio de hoy, Jesús usa un lenguaje dramático y simbólico para hablar del gran evento. El habla del Hijo del Hombre viniendo en poder y gloria. Sin embargo, él insiste en que nadie, excepto del Pa-dre, sabe el día y la hora cuando llegará el fin. Lo que importa realmente sobre la segunda venida de Jesús no es cuando o cómo será. Lo que importa es que estemos siempre preparados para ello y vivamos en fe, esperanza y amor. Para que el Amo nos encuentre listos cuando vuelva. Oración: Señor, miro la rama tierna de la higuera que es mi vida y espero. Mientras las sombras de la tarde se alargan sobre mis pasos, recapacito en tus palabras. El tiempo, como un misterio de pasado y futuro, de eterno presente. Las olas del hoy se quiebran en las experiencias llameantes de tu

Presencia y me recuerdan a los juegos sobre la arena que puntualmente el mar me destruye. Y sin embargo soy feliz. Feliz de mi nada, de mi arena que no queda en pie, porque una vez más tu Palabra escribe. Tratamos de pararnos en el tiempo, escribiendo y hablando, realizando obras excelsas que resistan la intemperie de los siglos. Y tú, sin embargo, te paras a escribir sobre la arena, para realizar obras de amor que tienen el perfume de una lepra acariciada y no temida, el sonido de voces roncas y sin forma como subfondo de cada día. El sabor de una venganza esfumada y de un abrazo dado de nuevo... obras que no quedan sino en el corazón de Dios y en la memoria de aquéllos que viven, atentos a las huella del vuelo de una paloma en el cielo de la propia existencia.
