SELECT COURSE DESCRIPTIONS DAS System Inspections: We will be going in depth into what it takes to do an effective inspection and what to look for as well as what to be on the lookout for. Electric utility perspective on interconnections for renewable energy systems: The section will focus on an electric utility perspective on modifications to National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Standard 855 for Energy Storage Systems, Underwriters Laboratory (UL)-1741 for The Standard for Inverters, Converters and Controllers for Use In Independent Power Systems as well as concerns with utility interconnections as described in the NFPA 70® National Electrical Code®” Chapter 705 regards to utility interconnections for alternative energy (predominately solar systems). Emerging Trends for Fire Service Personnel: The hazards and processes exposed to first responders is ever changing. New products and processes are continuously being introduced. The best way to avoid injury to the public and first responders is to become aware of what these emerging items are and to begin to explore what they are and how they might affect responding personnel. Ensuring Public Safety Emergency Communications: Verifying Indoor Network Performance: This course will raise the awareness of the students to the problem of indoor public safety radio performance and provide them with the knowledge of what they need to do to adequately test facilities and new systems. Additionally, a discussion of past cases will be discussed to provide real world examples to the students. Extinguish Inequities: Disability Inclusive Fire Safety & Community Risk Reduction: Developed in conjunction with the National Association of State Fire Marshals, The National Disability Rights Network is proud to offer this interactive session which will focus on disability inclusive fire safety approaches and community risk reduction strategies. Participants will learn about, and be encouraged to contribute their own experiences, partnering with people with disabilities on CRR techniques such as education, enforcement, economic incentives, engineering, and emergency response. Conversations will intentionally consider how race, class, gender, disability, and age can intersect and influence the overall effectiveness of fire safety/CRR programming. The importance of disability inclusive data collection/analysis will also be openly discussed as we strive to make more informed life safety decisions and involve the whole community in how success is sustained/measured. Fire Alarm Myths, Misunderstandings, & Missed Opportunities: In this course we will discuss Fire Alarm Rules and States as well as the Florida Building Code, NFPA 70 and NFPA 72. Specific topic s to be covered include Fire Alarm Panel tags, UL requirements, who doesn’t need a FASA card, initiating device compatibility, Booster panel connection, Dedicated Function System, Do Manufacturers Published Instructions equal code, and Backflow monitoring. Fire Protection Underground in Florida: Upon completion of this course, each participant will have a better understanding of the requirements of fire protection system piping installed underground, including, applicable NFPA Standards and state statutes, drawing requirements, and strategies to ensure compliance and approval. Fire Pump Basics, Installations, Inspections & Testing, and Impairment Mitigation: Class includes an introduction to fire pump systems to include the various pump types and drivers, and the different building applications that would require a fire pump system; an examination of NFPA 20 installation requirements to include fire pump rooms, diesel fire pumps, electric fire pumps, water supplies and system piping, and start up procedures; an examination of NFPA 25 Chapter 8 to include inspection intervals, testing procedures, and impairment situations; a discussion of the severity of fire pump system impairments, fire watch requirements, and methods of avoiding fire watch with temporary fire pumps; and a hands on set up and flow test of a 750 GPM diesel fire pump.

Page 9: 73rd Annual Florida Fire Prevention Conference

Florida Fire Prevention Code - Occupancies and Occupant Load: The Florida Fire Prevention Code (Life Safety® and Fire® Codes) considers the risk factors associated with a building and fire, including safety features to mitigate the risks, with the general use or occupancy classification system. Florida Fire Prevention Code Water Flow Demand for Firefighting: The Florida Fire Prevention Code (Life Safety® and Fire® Codes) considers the risk factors associated with a building and fire, including safety features to mitigate the risks by determining the needed firefighting water demand. High Performance Passive Fire Protection Solutions: This course provides an overview of the most current Code Compliant Intumescent and Fire-Retardant Solutions for structural steel, structural wood, upgrading 1 and 2-hour firewalls, interior furnishings, fabrics, plastics and fiberglass. How to Prevent Thermal Runaway in Lithium-Ion Batteries: Recent lithium-ion battery explosions have demonstrated how dangerous they can be. This webinar will explain the four stages of battery failure and how to prevent a thermal runaway with proper “Advanced Detection” at the appropriate stage of failure. It will also address why conventional gas detection will not prevent thermal runaway and address best design and layout practices as well as sequence of operation. Lithium-Ion batteries are safe once they’re understood! In-Building Public Safety Communications: Navigating Critical Changes that impact code-compliant Emergency Responder Communication Enhancement Systems (ERCES) programs: Since 2009, fire code has required radio coverage for first responders inside buildings. This session, presented by Chief Alan Perdue (Ret.) of the Safer Buildings Coalition, will provide insights into the critical trends and issues impacting the adoption and enforcement of ERCES within your State. Information provided is designed to assist attendees with understanding the critical impact these systems provide as it relates to the safety of our first responders. Needed Fire Flow (NFF) Calculations: Upon completion of this course, each participant will understand the different methods of calculating Needed Fire Flow based on building size and construction type. New Technology showcase: During this session the student will interact with 24 or more individual companies. Each company will explain the new and emerging technologies they supply that the individual street inspector will be seeing soon if they have not seen them already. Each company will have new products available for the inspector to see first-hand and obtain a knowledge of, while getting contact information from all the various entities for future follow up. NFPA 25 – The Gray Areas and More: Upon completion of this course, each participant will understand more of the NFPA 25 Standard including some gray areas such as forward flow tests, testing of sprinklers, and recalled products. Rapid Access Challenges Trends and New Technologies: Topics to be covered include: How Rapid Access plays a role with new industry challenges, the Growing Trend of Multi-Jurisdictional Response, How has COVID Impacted Response Strategies, the Impact of EV Charging Station Growth in Florida, the Importance of Asset Tracking, Response Challenges to Growth of Seniors, Being Prepared for the Increase of Carbon Monoxide (CO) Incidents, and What Should the Fire Industry and future leaders keep an eye on. Recommended Practices for Remote virtual Inspections: Using hand-held smartphones and tablets loaded with advanced software tools and technologies has made it possible for fire and building officials to observe construction activities and perform virtual building inspections from anywhere. Remote Virtual Inspection (RVI) programs allow fire and building departments to maintain continuity of vital community services needed to ensure the safety of the built environment. This class will familiarize participants with the implementation and administration of RVI programs and industry best practices.

Page 10: 73rd Annual Florida Fire Prevention Conference

Stress, Trauma and the Crucial Conversation: In basic first aid, we are taught to recognize the universal sign for choking. Unfortunately, there is no universal sign for someone struggling with a mental health issue or substance use disorder. Although there is new and emerging research on the impact of trauma and stress on fire and emergency service personnel, a gap remains in basic education and awareness. All fire and emergency service personnel must be trained to recognize and appropriately engage someone who is dealing with a mental health problem, regardless of its cause. This training should be available to their families and loved ones, as they are in the best position to recognize early signs and symptoms. Culture change starts with education, awareness, and accountability. Eliminating stigma requires consistent effort. Our personnel are and will always be our greatest asset. UL Fire Safety Research Institute Update and Mission Change: The Mission of the Firefighter Safety Research Institute has undergone a transformation to increase its scope of work from one of strictly firefighter safety to fire safety in general. This course seeks to describe the mission change and discuss what it means to the fire prevention/protection community. UL Resources for Fire Professionals: It’s important for Fire Professionals to know how they can find out more information about Listed and Labeled requirements described throughout the codes, therefore we’ll spend time understanding UL resources available to them regarding UL Test Standards, Product IQ, Manufacturer Instructions and Engineering Judgements. We’ll discuss the importance of understanding Approvals and the difference of Approval vs Listings as designated in the codes. Update from the State Fire Marshal’s Office: Attendees will be given an update on what is happening in the State Fire Marshal’s Office including pending regulatory changes, educational requirements and more of what can impact them every day. New changes in legislation, rules, and certification will be presented upon and discussed. Also, discussion will be had on the impact the pandemic has had on the agency and its deliveries and the various adjustments in operations as a result.
