Before your visitPreparing for your visit

You can download from our website an Activity Book for groups between the ages of 7 and 11 years. Students can choose one of six Elizabethan characters, each of which prompts questions that direct students to different parts of the exhibition. These activities can be completed individually or as groups.> shakespearesglobe.com/exhibition/groups

The Globe website also has information on the history of the original Globe, William Shakespeare, and today’s reconstructed playhouse. > shakespearesglobe.com/about-us

If you would like to pre-order items from the Globe Shop for your group to be picked up on the day of your visit, please contact us on 020 7902 1588 or [email protected]. We have a wide range of small gifts to choose from, priced from 50p. Your order will be individually bagged and be ready for collection in the shop. By pre-ordering you can save time on the day and ensure nobody goes home empty-handed.

Don’t forget that the Globe is an open-air theatre, so be prepared for all weather. Tours continue in rain, snow and sun, so please dress accordingly.

If you would like to visit the Globe in advance of bringing a group, please let us know on 020 7902 1500 or [email protected] Although you would be charged the normal admission price, this can be discounted from the cost of your group’s visit.

On the day of your visitCollecting your tickets

The group leader should collect tickets from the exhibition admissions desk on the day of the visit. You are welcome to bring your confirmation with you, but the name of the group will suffice.

We have limited space in the exhibition foyer, so we request that the group remains outside until the tickets have been issued unless the weather is inclement. We recommend arriving at least 15 minutes before your tour is scheduled to start to allow time for collecting tickets and toilet breaks, so that your tour starts promptly.

If you think your group will be running late please call us on 020 7902 1500 to let us know as soon as possible.

Please be aware that late arrival may mean that we cannot reschedule your tour, especially during our performance season when access to and capacity of the theatre is strictly limited.

Exhibition and Tour times

Your tour will last approximately 30 to 40 minutes and we advise leaving at least an hour to look around the exhibition.

Your tickets entitle the group to return to the exhibition until the end of opening hours on the day of your visit so be sure to keep them safe.

Depending on the timing of your visit, your tour guide will meet your group either at the exhibition admissions desk or on the lower level of the exhibition.

Exhibition audio guides

Audio guides are available for the exhibition in English, French, Italian, German, Spanish and Japanese; they can be collected from the exhibition admissions desk.

Please note that audio guides are not for use inside the theatre.

Arriving at the Exhibition

The entrance to the exhibition is on Bankside (see site map). There is a ramp down from the riverside walkway and visitors must then cross a cobbled road before reaching the ramped slope to the glass double-doors of the entrance.

In the reception area and inside the exhibition on the left-hand side, there are five steps leading from the entrance and a further two steps to the admissions desk. On the right, there is a curved ramp leading to the admissions desk. The desk is 750mm high. There are steps and a small ramp from the ticket desk to the mezzanine level.

Globe Exhibition

The Exhibition is situated on two levels. The route starts clockwise on the mezzanine level, along a wide, level corridor and descends to the lower level via a large, curved, 17-stepped, staircase or by wheelchair-accessible lift. The lift goes from lower level, up to the mezzanine level. The lower level is a large open-plan room with a series of smaller open-plan rooms on one side.

Wheelchair usersAll display cases and interactive screens in the exhibition are placed at a low level. There are wheelchair accessible toilets on the mezzanine level, and near the lift on the lower level which includes baby-change facilities.

Deaf or hearing impaired peopleFull commentaries are displayed on panels and interactive touchscreens throughout the Exhibition. There is a series of recorded video commentaries in the Exhibition; each has ahearing aid induction loop: please switch aids to ‘T’ position. Hearing dogs

are welcome. Please see general information in this leaflet under ‘Assistance Dogs’, page 5.

A hand-held audioguide is provided for visitors to use in the Exhibition. Tracks and volume controls are operated using buttons on the handset. Headphones are available to use with the handsets on request. An induction loop unit is available to borrow to use in combination with the handset on request. A printed transcript of the audioguide tracks and the video commentary screens is available on request.

Globe Theatre Tour

Access to the theatre as part of the guided tour is via a staircase (25 steps up from the upper level of the exhibition; 47 steps up from the lower level). A lift is available from both levels of the exhibition up to the Piazza level outside the theatre. Staff in the Exhibition can provide assistance.

The shop is well lit. The shop staff can help if assistance is needed to reach items onhigh shelves.

The shop counter is 895mm from the ground.

Eating and drinking

Swan at the Globe provides food and drink for visitors, with a bar, brasserie and coffee cart in the main foyer, offering breakfast, lunch, and dinner, as well as sandwiches, hot and cold drinks, and tasty snacks.

Please note that the Exhibition does not have a lunch space. There are grassy areas by the Tate Modern that can be used to picnic.

Personal belongings

We do not have any cloakrooms on site. You must keep your personal belongings with you at all times.

A working theatre

The Globe is a working theatre and its stage is in use for performances or education workshops throughout the year.

On the day of your visit, there may be rehearsals for actors or musicians in progress, or the stage crew may be constructing or moving scenery or preparing the theatre for the next performance.

This may not affect your tour at all and could give you the opportunity to see the theatre at work. However, you may find that we are operating ‘Silent Tours’, which means that your guide will talk to you outside the theatre; once inside we request no talking or photography. Your guide will be able to explain in detail what is happening in the theatre and what you may be watching on stage.

If you have further questions regarding how this might affect your visit please email: [email protected].

Special requirements

If you have any access requirements, or you require further information in order to complete a risk assessment, please contact us by emailing [email protected] or calling 0207 902 1500. These contact details can also be used should you have any further questions regarding your visit.

Page 8: 708149

Group supervision

The Globe Theatre is a working playhouse and the site in general can be very busy. Due to the nature of the visit, we expect each group to have at least one adult for every 15 students or children: to help achieve this we provide one free ticket for every 15 tickets paid for.

Accompanying adults are responsible for the health, safety and behaviour of the students in their care at all times during the visit.

Misbehaviour

Groups share the exhibition and theatre with other visitors. In order to ensure an enjoyable visit for all our patrons, the management reserves the right to request any group member to leave the Globe site if they are causing disturbance to other patrons.

If more than one member of your group is responsible for a disturbance, or if behaviour is considered threatening or disruptive, the management reserves the right to exclude the whole group and to terminate the visit immediately.

Theatre tours

During the theatre tour, the group must follow the tour guide’s instructions and stay with them all the time. If any member of the group wishes to leave early, they should inform the tour guide who can show them the safest route to leave.

Please ensure that all mobile phones, MP3 players and electrical devices are switched off during the tour.

Objects must not be thrown from the middle and upper galleries of the theatre.

Groups are not permitted on the stage.

Photography and video recording

Photography and video recording for personal use are generally allowed in the exhibition, but are not permitted in the theatre at certain times, particularly when rehearsals are in progress. Your tour guide will advise you if photography and video recording is allowed.

The use of tripods or the video recording of the whole theatre tour is not permitted.

Liability for damage

Damage done to Globe property may incur a financial penalty.

Handheld audio guides are made available for groups in the exhibition, with a key purpose to assist groups who do not have English as their first language. Audio guides are for use only in the exhibition and must not be taken to the theatre or off-site. They should be treated with care and consideration. Loss or damage will be charged to the group.
