SALVATION IS FROM THE JEWS The Role of Judaism in Salvation History from
Abraham to the Second Coming. By Roy H. Schoeman Schoeman weaves together fascinating speculations on the on-going role of the Jews in the light of the Holocaust, the State of Israel, Islam, & the Second Coming. This is an important book for the insights it provides & for the discussion it should pro-voke. Some of the answers most have never heard before! Mr. Schoeman is a convert from Judaism to Catholicism.

Gospel Passage of the Week Luke 6: 27-38 27 'But I say this to you who are listening: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, 28 bless those who curse you, pray for those who treat you badly. 29 To anyone who slaps you on one cheek, present the other cheek as well; to anyone who takes your cloak from you, do not re-fuse your tunic. 30 Give to everyone who asks you, and do not ask for your property back from someone who takes it. 31 Treat others as you would like people to treat you. 32 If you love those who love you, what credit can you expect? Even sinners love those who love them. 33 And if you do good to those who do good to you, what credit can you expect? For even sinners do that much. 34 And if you lend to those from whom you hope to get money back, what credit can you expect? Even sinners lend to sinners to get back the same amount. 35 Instead, love your ene-mies and do good to them, and lend without any hope of return. You will have a great reward, and you will be children of the Most High, for he himself is kind to the ungrateful and the wicked. 36 'Be compassionate just as your Father is compassionate.37 Do not judge, and you will not be judged; do not condemn, and you will not be condemned; forgive, and you will be forgiven. 38 Give, and there will be gifts for you: a full measure, pressed down, shaken together, and over-flowing, will be poured into your lap; because the standard you use will be the standard used for you.'

Reflection by Rev. Leonard N. Peterson—7th Sunday in Ordinary Time This item was first reported in a Canadian newspaper in 2011 and was updated last May. “Jobless Canadians who make even the smallest of errors on the employment insurance application forms wait extra weeks and sometimes months for their first benefits payment to arrive as a result of technological inflexibility and staff shortages.” If those applications are completed with no errors the approval process is quick. Sometimes it can be completed within 24 hours. But any mistakes or omissions will create extended delays because the com-puter system is unforgiving. (my emphasis) Sound familiar? For all the good our computers can do for us, these machines do not tolerate mistakes. So there they are, as common as toasters in our homes, and nes-tled neatly in our cell-phones and car consoles, but secret tyrants when it comes to human error, making them likely causes of frequent frustration. All because they cannot forgive. There is a parable in there somewhere, but I’m not capable of composing one. If our blessed Lord were still here among us in physical form I’m posi-tive that He would not only tell one on the spot but would make it as immortal as the Prodigal Son. All I can say is that we owe a great debt to God that He is so forgiving of our sins mortal and venial alike. Can you im-agine a world where He was not such? This weekend’s Readings from the Bible highlight this ever vexing problem for us of practicing forgiveness when every fiber of our being wants to exact form of sweet re-venge. When we are told to include even our enemies in forgiveness we bristle. We almost wish Our Lord had made a mistake, or at least retracted His statement in a later Gospel passage! Note how in the suspense-ful passage from the Book of Samuel David had an easy opportunity to slay Saul, his erstwhile friend but now a sworn enemy. What held David back? His belief that Saul was nonetheless than “the anointed of the Lord.” Just think of that whenever you are tempted to rake your local parish priest or bishop “over the coals” by your rash judgment and gossip. David’s belief was an actual grace that precluded any notion of committing the much worse evil of actual murder. The Gospel focuses on the first of many lessons Jesus would teach His new disciples, His “recruits” if you will. It’s the same lesson we need to hear, who became His disciples at our baptism. End your inflexibility toward other people and forgive them, even if they are real or perceived ene-mies of yours. Add in the belief that perception is not always reality. After all, I might add in this context, we are not pre-programmed machines that compute according to limited software. Granted, our computers com-pel us to be as accurate as we can and to deliberate before we choose a path of action. But none of them ev-er will match the ability of our informed consciences to know what the Lord wants in a given situation. The good news has to include the fact that our God is more than tolerant, and when we confess and repent of our bad choices to sin, He is more loving than we can imagine. Meanwhile, we are not computers either. Most of us are broad-minded enough to admit there are two sides to every question—our own side, and the side that no intelligent, informed, sane and self-respecting person could possibly hold. Right?

FIRST SATURDAY DEVOTION In the July 13, 1917 apparion at Fama, Our Lady said, “I shall come to ask for…the Communion of Reparaon on the first Sat-urdays.” She came expressly to request this devoon when she appeared to Sister Lucia on December 10, 1925, in Pontevedra, Spain, where she was preparing to start her religious life. The Moves for the Devoon Later, while Sister Lucia was in the chapel with Our Lord during part of the night of May 29-30, 1930, He explained the mova-on for the devoon. This explanaon answered the queson posed by her confessor about why the number should be 5 Sat-urdays and not 9 to correspond with the 9 First Fridays, or 7 to correspond with Our Lady’s 7 sorrows. Our Lord responded that there are 5 ways that people offend and blaspheme against the Immaculate Heart of Mary: 1. Offenses or blasphemies against the Immaculate Concepon – its denial and/or ridicule 2. Against her perpetual virginity 3. Against her divine maternity, refusing to accept her as the Moth-er of God and mother of all mankind 4. Those who implant in children’s hearts, indifference, contempt and even hate against our Immaculate Mother 5. Insults directed against her sacred images –displays of in-difference or ridicule, & the inflicon of damage to them. The essenal elements of the pracce of 1st Saturday Com-munions of Reparaon With the intenon of making reparaon to the Immaculate Heart for these five offenses, we are asked to: 1. Go to confession 2. Receive Holy Communion worthily 3. Pray five decades of the Rosary 4. Keep Our Lady company for 15 minutes while meditang on the mysteries of the Rosary The Great Promise Our Lady promised to assist all those who will pracce the devo-on of the 1st Saturday on five consecuve months with the graces necessary for salvaon at the hour of their death. Promise not a guarantee of heaven It would be a serious mistake to think that those who pracce the devoon on 5 consecuve 1st Saturdays are guaranteed passage into heaven when the moment of their death ar-rives. Our cooperaon with grace is always required. A life-long devoon, not merely five First Saturdays The promise associated with the pracce of the devoon on 5 consecuve 1st Saturdays has been mistakenly construed by many to mean that, once one has completed a series of 5, they have accomplished the devoon and are finished. This was not Our Lady’s intenon in making the promise, & has resulted in far fewer people praccing the devoon. Our regular pracce of the 1st Saturdays is a sign of our devoon to the Immaculate Heart & a desire on our part to make reparaon for the blasphe-mies against her.
