Machining Titanium Short Facts & Tips

As easy to machine as 316 Stainless Steel, depending on (alloy) gradeHas a tendency to seize and gall (as do stainless steels). At elevated temperatures the surface temperature increases and titanium particles will weld to the tool dulling it.• Use Sharp Tools (better to re-sharpen frequently)• Proper Tool Angles• Use heavy feeds (thicker chip to decrease speed and heat build-up)• Low Modulus of Elasticity ( exes more)• Rigid set-up – Rigid machines• Low Thermal Conductivity (lower dissipation of heat)• Signi cant coolant directed as close as possible to point of contact

of the tool• Slow Speeds• Work Hardens less than Stainless Steel (approx. equivalent to 0.20

Carbon Steels)

ToolingAlways check with manufacturer or experienced shop for recommendations depending on the Grade of titanium and Hardness. Both High Speed Tools and Carbide Tools (for higher hardness) have been recommended.

• Turning speeds can range from 150 fpm to approx. 400 fpm depending on the titanium grade (CP or Alloy), the tool material, depth of cut and the feed. Water soluble & Sulphurized cutting oils are widely used

• Milling speeds are generally from 25/30 fpm to as high as (approx.) 150 fpm again, dependent on the grade, tool material, feeds (0.003 to 0.008 in/tooth (ipt) being recommended) and depth of cut.

Drilling• Apply max. force the drill will permit• “Keep Drilling” – Do Not ride in the hole under light

pressure• Engage & Disengage as quickly as possible for deep

hole chip removal• Sulfurized & Chlorinated coolants OR mixtures of

medium grade mineral oil, soluble oil & water have proven satisfactory

Sawing• Power Hacksaw – Coarse pitch

blades 2 to 6 teeth per inch• High blade tension• Heavy Feed & Slow Speed• Generous Coolants

Welding TitaniumWelding titanium has become a very routine operation performed by many thousands of welders in various industries. The Commercially Pure (CP) grades are quite easily welded, easier than stainless and nickel base alloys (NBA), because of their single phase compositions (purity levels of approx. 99.2% to 99.7%). Alloys of titanium are also readily weldable, generally with the same ease (or more so) as stainless and NBA.

Titanium is weldable in all forms: Titanium Inert Gas (TIG) / Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW)Metal Inert Gas (MIG) / Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW)Plasma Arc Welding (PAW)Electron Beam Welding (EBW)Laser Beam Welding (LBW)Resistance Spot/Seam Welding (SPOT)Explosion Welding (Bonding)Submerged Arc Welding (SAW)Diffusion Bonding (DB)Flash Welding (FW)

Circular Sputtering Targets (Pucks) (Ion Beam Sources)Sizes: 24mm to 120mm Dia x lengthCustom sizes available using your drawingMaterials Typical: Ti, Zr, Ti/Al, Ta, SS, Nb, Cu, Cr, Al and others.

Clamp Down Sputtering Targets • Bonded Sputtering TargetsCoating Materials has been supplying clamp down and bonded style sputtering targets for over 15 years in many different shapes and sizes from very thin to thicknesses up to 1.75”, from 2” wide to 13” wide, and from 2” long up to 130” long. Coating Materials bonded targets range from small circular to jumbo size and are bonded to our copper backing plates or other materials used as backing plates.

Custom built sputtering targets manufactured to your drawings can easily be machined using our modern machining facility. Stocking programs are available for your sputtering targets against a blanket type order, with on the shelf targets ready to ship per your required releases.

Coating Materials uses either Indium or Elastomer bonding agents depending on application requirements. Complete inspection documents of bonding integrity can be supplied if requested.

Circular MagnetronsCircular Magnetrons (Pucks) are machined using state of the art computer controlled CNC machinery. Coating Materials supplies Pucks in the following materials: Ti, Zr, Cu, Al, SS, plus alloys of Ti/Al and many other materials supplied on request.

Short Facts & TipsField Welding is very (most) common (Chamber welding is only one welding method) Titanium has an af nity for Oxygen and Nitrogen, especially at higher temperatures Argon (High Purity) gas Shielding is necessary to avoid contamination (most popular for manual welding) Argon (65%) & Helium (35%) mixture is often used for machine weldingUse a trailing shield to keep temperature below 600-800 0F to avoid O

2 & N

2 absorption

Mechanical Properties equal to annealed base metal can be obtained as-welded

Corrosion Resistance as-welded remains the same as the base metal

Joint Preparation is critical: Remove any foreign matter / Use only new clean lean stainless les & wire brushes ( no steel brushes or steel wool )

Remove rough surfaces to avoid crevices which may serve as pockets

Clean area with non-chlorinated solvents - Acetone or Toluene or Methyl Ethyl Keytone

Use clean lint-free cloths or cellulose sponges (avoid cotton gloves, rags, etc.)

Pre-Purging is necessary for closed areas (to eliminate air contamination)

Avoid open windows & doors, where possible

Inspection can be done Visually (color), by Dye-Penetrant, Radiographically & by Hardness

Color indicates degrees of contamination / thickness of the oxide layer. Some color is acceptable but may indicate air intrusion and/or incomplete purge. Examples & approximates degrees:

Base Metal - 30% Elongation Glossy Silver or Light Straw - 20% Elongation

Dark Straw or Purple – 12 % ElongationDark Blue, Dull Yellow, Dull Gray or Powder White < 12% Elongation = No Good

Tubular Sputtering Targets (C-Mags) Rotatable C-Mag technology has been used in large area coating for manufacturing architectural glass and thin lms since the early 1990’s.The original (McKelvey) patent for a rotatable magnetron sputtering cathode in 1982 used Tico Titanium sputtering tubes.

Types of Cylindrical Magnetron Sputtering TargetsCoating Materials makes all forms of cylindrical magnetron sputtering targets, including those with ends that have been developed over the last few years and has a license to manufacture the QCT (VDS) type end.

Sputtering TubesCoating Material’s sputtering tubes are extruded from large input billets then straightened and nished on the OD and ID. After this process the ends are nish machined per customer request.

Backing TubesBacking tubes are also available. Co-extruded tubes are available due to new co-extrusion technology, which allows the tube to have an inner material that is less expensive than the outer material that is to be sputtered. For instance, Niobium over Titanium or Zirconium over Titanium. Copper over Titanium co-extrusions are also made to better control the straightness of the copper tube.

ExtrusionsExtrusions are offered in sizes of from 2” Diameter up to 8.625” Diameter. in lengths from fractions of an inch up to 160 inches, wall thicknesses from 1/8 inch up to (and plus) 1 inch. Also available in metric sizes.

Linear Magnetrons, (Bolt Down Sputtering Targets)Coating Materials has the ability to produce Planar type targets using the bolt down con guration and clamp down styles.

Planar Sputtering Targets:Materials Typical: Ti, Zr, Ti/Al, SS, Nb, Ta, Cu, Bronze, Al, Ni/Cr, Ni, Ni alloysSizes: Custom made to your drawingsDisks, Delta, Bolt Down, Clamp Down, Bonded, Monolithic, made in most shapes and sizes to 144” long

Tubular Sputtering TargetsExtruded seamless in the following materials: Ti, Zr, Cu, Al, Nb, SS,Ni, Inconel. Co-Extruded seamless in the following combinationsCu/Ti, Nb/Ti/ Zr/Ti. Sizes from 2” Dia to 8.625” Dia x lengths up to160” with ends per your request.
