FIFTH SUNDAY OF LENT MARCH 22, 2015
The Fifth Sunday of Lent-March 22 The Fifth Sunday of Lentbundle of wheat was placed in the Jerusalem scene which signifies Jesus's bountiful gifts to us all. He satisfies our hungry hearts with gifts of finest wheat. In calling Lazarus out of the tomb, He freely gave us a chance to see so we might believe. Do we always come to the table of plenty with eyes of faith and an attitude of gratitude?
Jeremiah 31:31-34
Hebrews 5:7-9
John 12:20-33
A New Covenant 31 The days are surely coming, says the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah. 32 It will not be like the covenant that I made with their ancestors when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt—a covenant that they broke, though I was their husband, says the Lord. 33 But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the Lord: I will
put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. 34
What would it mean for us to have God’s law written on our hearts? One of the great things the Bible reveals to us is that God is determined to have a family who will represent God to the world. Perhaps God’s determination to have a family stems from the Biblical revelation that the essence of God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, is family – a family on mission. God is a family on mission to redeem and restore this Creation which
God loves so deeply; deeply enough that the Father was willing to allow His Son to be sacrificed for the salvation of us all.
This year for Lent I am planning to spend more time with my family learning Holy Scripture by heart. It has been SUCH a blessing to learn Bible verses by heart, because you never know when you will talk to someone who is hurting, someone who could use a word of promise or encourage-ment or challenge. And what better words do we have than God’s Word! I pray that when Christ calls me home, and when He examines my heart,
I pray that He will recognize my heart as belonging to Him because his living and active Word is written there.
- Bryan Langlands Campus Minister, Director of the Office of Faith Georgetown College
Monday of the Fifth Week of Lent - March 23 John 8:1-11 My three-year-old son and five-year-old daughter get into a lot of fights lately. More often than not, I find myself breaking them up and doling out
consequences, trying to see past "who started it." Sixteen miles north of my home is Ferguson — which, in one of the most segregated metro
areas of our country, might as well be on the other side of the world. You probably know it's been a site of civil unrest since a white police officer
shot a young unarmed black man last summer. What is justice? What is mercy? Who is innocent?
In today's first reading, Susanna stands falsely accused of adultery, and Daniel turns the tables by exposing the elders' lies about her. There's an
easy and clear-cut resolution, after some drama. But in the gospel, the woman is "caught in the very act of adultery." There is no doubt about her
guilt. Jesus famously admonishes the mob, "You without sin, cast the first stone." And when there is no one left, he lets her go. Am I capable of
that kind of mercy? Even when I catch someone in the very act of committing a wrong, can I remember my own sinful nature before I start casting
stones? Can I show mercy to my kids? To a cop who might or might not use lawful force? To a man who might or might not be guilty of a crime?
As in the psalm, we trust that we should fear no evil, even in the dark valley. God is always present, spreading a banquet for us in front of our
enemies. Sometimes it's hard to trust that God is there in a world full of injustice. But I think the greater challenge is in taking that grace to be just
and merciful ourselves, even to those who might not deserve it.

SS. FRANCIS & JOHN CATHOLIC PARISH MARCH 22, 2015
Tuesday of the Fifth Week of Lent - March 24 John 8:21-30
Wednesday of the Fifth Week of Lent - March 25 Luke 1:26-30
Thursday of the Fifth Week of Lent - March 26 John 8:51-59
Friday of the Fifth Week of Lent - March 27 John 10:31-42
Saturday of the Fifth Week of Lent - March 28 John 11:45-56 In today's Gospel reading, the high priests and Pharisees are concerned with the impact Jesus may have on their lives. Ultimately, they decide to
kill him, so he is driven to the desert for a while. I don't like to think that I've ever plotted to kill Jesus or driven him away, but the fact is, I know I
have. And, Lent is that wonderful time of year that helps me to realize that.
For a few years now, my wife and I, as part of our Lenten fasting, have given up television. The first couple of days and weeks bring with them a
silence and peace that strongly highlights the ways we've driven away and killed Jesus so many times throughout the year. Once the TV is gone,
we inevitably turn to quieter, more family-oriented activities like board games, puzzles or reading together. Like most, we always thought of TV as
relaxing, but we didn't realize how fastpaced and chaotic it really is until it was gone. In those slower, quieter activities, we always start to hear
each other more clearly. And, what's more, God's whispers that were there all along can start to be heard.
I think we all have a hard time getting into Lent at first because when we start thinking about fasting, we can't help but see the excess in our lives.
Be it addictions, squandered time, or spiritual laziness, we look to the desert and see Jesus standing there where we asked him to stay every time
we reached for the remote instead of our Bibles or rosaries. My hope for this Lenten season is that your family and mine can both succeed in
finding that noise in our lives, muting it, and letting Jesus know that it's safe to come back around.
