Rituals & Routines

When I clap three times, you clap back three times and are silent

Hopefully I don’t have to do it more than once!

Quiet and Silence

Quiet is using a hushed voice

Chatting with a neighbor is appropriate during a quiet period, such as individual or group work

Silence is making NO sound

Chatting is not appropriate during a silent period, such as during a quiz or listening to music

Page 8: 6.1.1

Rituals & Routines

The Bravo Board

Students who demonstrate great effort, character, enthusiasm, and respect will get a star to place on the Bravo Board outside the Music room

What Are We Learning Today?

By the end of today’s class, you will…

…know how to set up your chairs quickly and efficiently

…know how Band and Orchestra will work in 5th grade

…learn how to play “What’s Your Name?”Standards:6.4.1.3.16.2.1.3.16.1.3.3.16.1.3.3.2

Band & Orchestra

At the end of last year, you indicated which instrument you would like to play (or chose not to play one)

I am sending home an informational packet today

Let’s make sure you know the information before you bring it home to your family

Page 15: 6.1.1

Band & Orchestra

You have the choice to participate in band or orchestra after school

Band instruments: flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, saxophone, trumpet, French horn, trombone, baritone, tuba, percussion

Orchestra instruments: violin, viola, cello, bass

If you choose to play an instrument, you must supply it yourself—Paideia Academy does not have any for you to borrow

If your family has a concern about paying for an instrument, have them talk to me—I’ll keep it confidential and help in any way I can!

Page 16: 6.1.1

Band & Orchestra

Band and orchestra will take place after school on Thursday afternoons from 4:00 to 5:00

We will alternate band weeks and orchestra weeks

In addition to after school ensemble (full group) rehearsal, you will have the opportunity to take group lessons during Monday Advisory

Page 17: 6.1.1

Band & Orchestra

We will participate in both Upper Academy music concerts

Winter Concert: December 11th

Spring Concert: June 4th

You will be expected to practice 1 hour each week

This is not difficult—I promise!

Just practice for 20 minutes three times a week

Page 18: 6.1.1

Band & Orchestra

Playing an instrument is difficult

If you get frustrated, you are probably not alone

It’s okay to struggle—you will get it eventually!

If you are not having fun, I encourage you to keep trying

If your family decides you don’t want to continue (and this is an okay decision!), please wait until the end of a semester

You’d be surprised at what you’ll accomplish!

Page 19: 6.1.1

What’s Your Name?

First, let’s move our chairs into a drum circle

For now, just make sure that we all face the center

We will have a seating chart next week

I will say and play “What’s Your Name?”

One student will respond with their name, in a two-beat rhythm

We then repeat it as a class

Page 20: 6.1.1

What’s Your Name?

For example:

Me: “What’s your name?”

Timmy: “Timmy Johnson!”

Us: “What’s your name? Timmy Johnson!”

It’s always me, student, class, class

Let’s try it together!
