Production ReflectionYour Name

ProcessFor this project I will make a rotoscope made out of geometrical shapes.

The image I will rotoscope is a photograph of a robin. I found this image by simply entering the search term robin into Google Images, and downloading image that appealed to me the most.

I will make my project using Adobe Photoshop.

Process

To make the shapes I will be creating seamless (meaning that there wont be any gaps in between the shapes), I have applied a grid to my document. I did this through View > Show > Grid and View > Snap to > Grid

Next I am going to alter the settings for my grid by going to Edit > Preferences > Guides, Grid & Slices

In the Grid section (marked with a dashed red line), I made it so that there would be a gridline every 5 pixels, and I have selected a bright green for the colour of my grid, because this colour stands out the most on the robins red feathers.


ProcessWith the Polygonal Lasso tool, I created a triangular selection out of the birds beak, and applied an Average Blur to it. Doing this will find the most common colour within the selection I made, and will fill the selection entirely with said colour.

Here you can see the beak before, and after the Average Blur was applied.

This is the process that will be undertaken for the entire image. Instead of recording every single selection I make, I will take a screenshot each time Ive completed a segment of the robins body. To save time, I can press the keyboard shortcut CTRL+F to apply an Average Blur, instead of selecting it from the Filter Menu each time I form a selection.


ProcessIve finished the face.


ProcessHere I have completed the entire orange section of the robins body.


ProcessAnd here you can see that I have completed the white section of the robins body.


ProcessIts almost complete now. Ive finished the birds body and the branch its standing on, now I only need to do the background and the second branch.


ProcessI have completed the second branch. Now all thats left is the background.

After I finished the branch, I used the Polygonal Lasso tool to outline the robin and the branches, and copied them to a new layer, separating them from the background.


ProcessFrom this point on, I will be working on the background. To do this, I will have to temporarily remove everything in the foreground from the picture.

As I mentioned in the last slide, I have copied the robin and the branches to new layers.

With the original layer selected, I held CTRL on my keyboard and clicked on the thumbnail of the robin in the layer above it. By doing this, a selection marquee has formed around the outline of the robin. Then, I removed the bird by pressing the Delete button on my keyboard.

After the robin was removed, I followed the exact same process with the branches.


ProcessBelow you can see that I have applied the same method I used for the robin and branches to the background.

This is what it looks like with the layers containing robin and branches enabled:


ProcessAs you can see, despite using the grid, there are quite a lot of gaps in between the shapes. A remedy against these gaps is going over them with the Pencil tool in a colour of one of the nearest shapes. The gaps pictured below are only a few of many.


ProcessTo make the robin stand out from the background more, I added a gradient adjustment layer to the layer containing the background.

After that, I added a gradient adjustment layer to the robins body as well.
