- To replaces fluid lost from the

casualty’s circulatory system.



I.V. Fluids -

- Contains both water and electrolytes

(sodium, potassium, calcium, and

chloride compounds)



I.V. Supplies:

I.V. Solution bag Intravenous infusion set

Catheter and needle unit

Constricting band

Anti-microbial ointment

Cotton pads Adhesive tape

Scissors



I.V. Bag, I.V. Set, and catheter/needle unit

Expiration date

Clarity of the fluids

Prepare the I. V. Set:

#emove the protective coveringfrom the outlet port on the I.V. bag.

#emove the protective cap the

spie on the infusion set.

$rasp the drip chamber %& one

hand and the spie cap %ith otherhand.



Remove the cap w/ a twisting motion

w/o touching the spie.

!ang the bag on an ob"ect above the

level of the casualty’s heart.

#$uee%e the drip chamber until half of

the chamber is filled w/ &.'. solution.



Remove the air from the tubing.!old the end of the tubing above the

bottom of the bag.

Release or loosen the tubing clamp.

oosen the protective cap over the

adapter.

Check the i$&usio$ site &or si%$so& i$&iltratio$. The si%$s o& the

i$&iltratio$ are:'nusual pain felt by casualty at the site.

Remove two strips of tape from the &.'. bag

and use them to mae a diagonal cross over the

catheter hub. +ne the hub secure is secured,

release your hold on the adapter.



Use o$e piece o& tape to securethe adapter.

?ake a loose sa&et! loop o&

tu#i$% o$ top o& the e7tre'it!", the tu#i$% #elo" the i$&usio$site.

Secure the loop o& tu#i$% ", the&ourth piece o& tape.



Remove the Catheter

Adust the cla'p o$ the tu#i$%so the &lo" o& &luid is stopped.

5oose$ a$d re'o(e the stripso& tape

Re'o(e the catheter &ro' the(ei$ #! pulli$% it out at thesa'e a$%le used i$ i$serti$%

the $eedle.
