As the month began, the Second Battalion was carrying out its mission on Line J.ANli!STOWN as Right Battalion, Right Regiment, First Harine Division. .The Battalion Command Post was located at CT 107072 with "E" company in the right company sector from CT 100095 to CT 093087, ;;F;; company in the center, and "D" company on the left from CT 085075 to CT 077068. In addition to manning the main line of reeista..T!ce 11 F" Compe:~ny outposted COP 19 w! th a reinforced rifle squad and COP HI-A with a reinf'orced fire team, while "D" company attached a reinforced squad to the Third Bat­talion, Fifth Marines until 21 February and then to the First Bat­talion, Fifth Harines to outpost COP 21.

2. Operation "Tangle wire 11 began on 4 Februs.ry and continued to 11 Februarv. b. Forty-nine (49) rounds of enemy fire fell on friendly nositions durin~:r the neriod. four (4) of which were artillery -shells. - • •

February 4.

a.= At. 0'705 the MT~"R~ received enemy s:mal.l. arms and machine gun fire from CT 088089. "E" Company and "F" Company returned the fire resulting in the enemy fire ceasin~. No casulties were sustained. Two (2) reconnaissance patrols screened the Batta~ -lion's front during the period. Al.l returning without contact.

b. Colonel Walt and Lieutenant Colonel Finch, accompanied by the Commanding Officer inspected the "D" Company sector.

The patrol ~ired. into the enemy with· sinall ai-ms and automatic weapons, but the fire was not returned. The enemy disengaged immediately and called in mortar fi~e on the patrol. There were no friendly casualties and an estimated one (1) enemy was killed.

b. The Commanding Officer and Lieutenant Colonel Finch in­spected the "E" Company lines.

o. Sixty-six (66) rounds o~ enemy fire tell on rriendly lines during the period, eleven (11) of which were artillery shells.

February 10.

a. one (1) reconnaissance and six (6) ambush patrols were active forward of the Battalion's lines. All returned with negative contact.

b. Colonel Walt inspected the f1r-at platoon ot the 4.2• Mortar Company during the afternoon.

c. The Commanding Officer and Lieutenant Colonel Finch inspected the first platoon of the 4.2 1 Mortar Company in the early afternoon.

February 14.

a. At 2200 Fox-2 reconnaissance patrol detonated an M-3 mine at OT 09060834, resulting in the death of one, (l) Marine and the wounding of another. One (1) ambush and eix (6) recon­naissance patrols operated forward of the Battalion's lines during the r~urs 0~ darkness.

b. Lieutenant General Taylor, Lieutenant General Kendall. Major General Pollock, and Colonei Walt visited the Battalion­Command Poet.

c. Incoming tor the period totalled fifty-nine (59) rounds ot mixed mortar and artillery fire.

February 15.

a. The usual number of ambush and reconnaissance patrols screened the Battalion's trent during the hours o~ darL~ess. P.o contact was made with the enemy.

b. Seventeen (17) rounds of mixed mortar fire fell in the Battalion sector during the period.

February 16.

a. At 1900 while cleaning debris from a burned out bunker a friendly hand grenade was detonated resulting in the wounding of one (1) man. ~wo {2) ambuSh and six (6j reconnaissance patrols operated on the front of the Battalion sector during the period.

b. Forty-eight (48) rounds of mixed mortar and nineteen (19) rounds of artillery fell on friendly lines during the period.

a. One (1) man from "E" Company was wounded as a result of incoming tire at 1435. TWo (2) ambush and six (6) reconnais­sance patrols were sent out, each returning with negative contact.

b. Rear Admiral Olsen, Major General Pollock and Colonel Walt visited the Battalion Command Post during the morning.

1. The Second Battalion, Fifth Marines Sick Bay received a total. of six hund.red seventy-five (675) patient-visits during the period. One hundred eleven (111) members of the Battal.ion suffered battle wounds and nine {9) deaths were recorded as a result of enemy action. Also one (l) personnel was recorded as missing in action.

2. Four hundred sixty=nine (469) patient-visits were diagnosed as diseases of the eye, ear, nose or throat. Fifty-one (51) patient-visits were treated or diagnosed for dental. diseases and con~tions. Five (5) patient-visits were found to be vene­real diseases and two (2) patients were recorded as having personality disor-der-a.
