Reading instruction is separated into three parts:● Mini-lesson, Independent Reading Time and ClosingWord Study● Skills taught will help students when spelling, applying, and transferring

spelling rules/phonics rules to reading and writing● Assessments calculated in reading grade. Students will apply their

learning, so no word lists will be sent home for memorization. ● Per district policy, there is no reteach/retest on word study tests.

Language instruction is separated into three parts:● Mini-lesson: Teacher introduces a specific writing strategy implemented

by authors of books students are reading. The strategy is explained and modeled, and the teacher connects the strategy to the students’ writing

● Independent Writing: Students will write their own drafts in their notebooks and take pieces through the writing process. They may collaborate with their peers and individually conference with the teacher

Language instruction continued:● Closing: Students reflect and share what they’ve learned and how

they’ve used it in their writing. It is our goal to feel like an accomplished author. Once students complete the writing process by publishing their work, the class will have a special celebration day to share their work.

● Grammar/Conventions: Students will be held accountable for grammar and conventions taught and assessed in class.

Social Studies

● 5th grade covers U.S. history. Throughout the year, students use an interactive social studies notebook.

● Most major tests will be open notebook. ● By the end of 5th grade, students are expected to

identify and label the 50 states and their capitals. This test will not be open notebook.

Homework

● All subjects will assign homework and your child will write these assignments in their planner.

● Teachers will mark communication cards when homework is not turned in and could count against the student’s conduct grade.

● Homework is deducted 10 points per day late. After 3 days, your teacher may input a 0 into the gradebook. When absent, students receive additional days (1 to 1) to turn in assignments.

● Students are responsible for making up work when absent.● Homework dropped off at the front office will be considered late. Also, please don’t

email student homework to the teacher. The student may turn in homework upon their return.

● Students are expected to write assignments and upcoming quizzes/tests in planners each day.

● Students are responsible for maintaining and keeping their planner in their backpack.

● BYOD: Students may bring their own device for school purposes only. Devices will be confiscated until the end of the day if used inappropriately.

● Teachers will communicate inappropriate behavior via communication logs. Repetitive marks will result in an “N” in one or more categories on the report card.

● If your student receives a mark/comment on their communication card, please initial and return to your teacher the following day. Otherwise, please initial every Tuesday evening.

Study Hall/Detentions

● Students who need to complete class work due to absences may be assigned Study Hall.

● Students who consistently have difficulty following classroom rules may be assigned detention by an administrator.

● Detention/Study Hall is held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:10 - 4:10 p.m.

Safety Patrol

● Safety Patrol rotates on a schedule. Your child will have the opportunity to sign up for Safety Patrol during P.E. Students with good behavior will be chosen through random drawings within their homeroom.

● To be eligible for safety patrol, a student must maintain good behavior and academic grades of 70 and above in all subjects.

Birthday Celebrations

● You may bring store bought treats for your child’s birthday to share with the entire class. Treats will be enjoyed during lunch. Please remind your child to check the birthday table (located outside the cafeteria) at the beginning of lunch.

● Those students with summer birthdays may bring treats to celebrate half birthdays.

● Birthday party invitations are not permitted to be handed out at school. Please use the PTA birthday list for contact information.

Lunch

● You are welcome to visit your child at lunch. You may eat with your child at the visitor table. Due to the high volume of visitors, children may not invite friends to eat with them.

● Students with allergies sit farthest from the trash cans. The students who purchase a school lunch sit in the middle of the tables. Students who bring lunches sit closest to trash cans. Students with allergies can move spots with a signed note.

Nurse

● Students must be fever free and stomach virus free for 24 hours prior to returning to school.

● All cough drops must be kept in the nurse’s office.● Please remind students to bring their water bottle and stay

hydrated to reduce headaches.● Students should not call home to tell parents they feel ill.

Instead, students will be sent home by the nurse.

ID and Lanyards

● It is a district policy that every student in 5th grade wears their ID at all times. Lanyards must have a breakaway safety feature.○ Replacement ID $1○ Lanyard $3

Water Bottles and Snack

● Students are encouraged to stay hydrated by bringing a water bottle filled with water. Only water is allowed in classrooms.

● Closed-lid, condensation-free, non-disposable water bottles without straws only.

● Your child may bring an easy to eat, healthy snack for their daily snack time. Please be mindful of peanut allergies!

Transportation

● The teacher will send your student home using your specifications from the beginning of the year. If your child needs to go home a different way than specified, please send a note OR email [email protected]

● Please do not email your teacher with transportation changes.● Severe Weather Dismissal: The teacher will refer to your severe weather

dismissal choice from the beginning of the year to determine how to send each student home. The walkers/bikers are not allowed to dismiss during lightning. Therefore, they may be late returning home on severe weather days.

● Please specify your student’s walker/biker hallway for dismissal.
