TWENTY-SEVENTH SUNDAY

IN ORDINARY TIME

HE EMBRACED THEM AND BLESSED THEM

Today, Jesus stresses how children embody the reign of God. Children are trusting and loving and have hearts that are open to love. They are joyful when they are made aware of God’s love for them, and are eager to return that love. This is the model Jesus holds out to us if we want to welcome the reign of God. We need to have open, loving hearts. We must drop our defenses, however we came by them, and welcome Christ’s love for us with joy. This is impossible for us on our own. Only the grace of God will enable us to do this, but that grace is freely and generously given. We have only to accept it.

Let the children come to me; do not prevent them, for the Kingdom of God belongs to such as these.

— Mark 10:14

OUR COVER ARTWORK LET THE LITTLE CHILDREN COME TO ME

Carl Christian Vogel von Vogelstein 1788-1868

Carl Christian Vogel von Vogelstein was a German painter who moved to St. Petersburg when he was 20 years old and, at the age of 25, moved to Rome. So, these three big influences in the art world – German, Russian, and Italian – make him a very interesting painter who is hard to categorize. Stylistically, he runs between the classic and romantic schools, then prevailing in Rome. In this painting, we see Jesus with outstretched arms, not only blessing the children, but also protecting them. All five children closest to Jesus are depicted in various poses of prayer – folded hands, kneeling, head in arms, etc. The little boy being brought forward in the background shows Jesus is happy to put His loving arms around anyone who is willing to walk up to Him. He has love and tenderness for us all!

TODAY IS RESPECT LIFE SUNDAY When God created each of us, He did so with precision and purpose, and He looks on each of us with a love that cannot be outdone in intensity or tenderness. Moreover, the Lord invites each of us to behold ourselves and each other with the same wonder and awe. No matter how the world may view us or others, let us treat each person as the masterpiece that he or she is.

WORD OF LIFE “Every human being – no matter how vulnerable or helpless, no matter how young or how old, no matter how healthy, handicapped or sick, no matter how useful or productive for society – is a being of inestimable worth, created in the image and likeness of God. This is the dignity of America … the ultimate test of her greatness: to respect every human person, especially the weakest and most defenseless ones, those as yet unborn.”

Saint John Paul II

IN TIME OF NEED, TURN TO OUR LADY OF THE ROSARY

FEAST DAY OCTOBER 7 The month of October is dedicated to the Holy Rosary. And, Thursday, October 7th, is the special Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary. The word Rosary means, “Crown of Roses.” Each time you say a Hail Mary, you are giving Our Lady a beautiful rose, and a complete Rosary creates a Crown of Roses. Loving Mother that she is, Our Lady of the Rosary hears our needs and graciously intercedes on our behalf, entreating our Son to extend His mercy and care to us. Here at St. Catharine’s, we pray the Rosary every day, Monday through Friday, following our 8:30 AM Mass, and again at 12 PM and 5 PM. The Scriptural Rosary follows the 8:30 AM Mass on Saturday. Or you may wish to pray the Rosary to our beautiful Blessed Mother privately and peacefully in our lovely Grotto. If you or someone you love is troubled, ill, lonely, or in any kind of pain or danger, turn to Our Lady of the Rosary to ask for Mary’s gentle and comforting touch.

“When you say your Rosary, the angels rejoice, the Blessed Trinity delights in it, my Son finds joy in it, too, and I myself am happier than you can possibly imagine. After the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, there is nothing in the Church that I love as much as the Rosary.” Our Lady to Blessed Alan de la Roche

“There is no problem, I tell you, no matter how difficult it is, that we cannot resolve by the prayer of the Holy Rosary.”

Sister Lucia dos Santos, Fatima Seer

“The Rosary is the most beautiful and the most rich in graces of all prayers; it is the prayer that touches most the Heart of the Mother of God.”

Pope Saint Pius X

OUR LADY OF FATIMA STATUE HERE FOR THE MONTH OF OCTOBER

The beautiful statue of Our Lady of Fatima will be with us for the month of October so that all who wish may come and spend quiet time in prayer with her. We will recite the Rosary in her honor each morning at 9:00 AM, Monday through Saturday during the month of October.

OUR LADY OF FATIMA STATUE TO MARIAN SHRINE IN STONY POINT

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 9 AT 1:30 PM The Statue will leave St. Catharine’s for the day on Saturday, October 9 and go to the Marian Shrine in Stony Point. There will be a Eucharistic Procession and Rosary Rally to celebrate the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary. We hope you will take advantage of this blessed opportunity.

WHY CHILDREN? Of all the people in the world to whom Our Lady could have appeared to in Fatima, why choose three innocent young shepherd children? We see throughout history God choosing the humble and small, the shepherds who travel to Bethlehem, Bernadette Soubirous in Lourdes, Mary herself, and many others. In Fatima, that’s exactly what happened. God chose three humble children from humble homes exactly to emphasize that this powerful message doesn’t come from man, but from God. The wonder of Fatima that is sometimes overlooked is the extraordinary response of the three shepherd children. It is remarkable to recall that Lucia was only 10, Francisco 9, and Jacinta 7. Isn’t it wonderful and typical then that these children, visited by this “Beautiful Lady,” the Queen of Heaven, who herself had humbly received the message of an angel at a very young age, and who had given birth to the Son of God in a manger, should be the ones to receive her message of peace and prayer.

MY LITTLE CHILDREN In the Bible, God tells us that children are a blessing and a gift. Their spirits are filled with innocence, joy and laughter. Jesus actually tells us to be like children and to come to Him full of faith and trust.

A beautiful verse comes from John 13:33-35 … “My little children, I shall not be with you much longer. I give you a new commandment: love one another; just as I have loved you, you also must love one another. By this love you have for one another, everyone will know that you are my disciples.” Even though Jesus gives us the new commandment to love another, the gentle words, “My little children” He uses stand out. He address His disciples with those three beautiful words, showing the great tenderness and loving affection Our Lord has for all of us.

THE FRANCISCAN CROWN ROSARY If you have a special devotion to St. Francis of Assisi, whose Feast we celebrate on October 4th, the Franciscan Crown Rosary may be for you. The Franciscan Crown Rosary celebrates the Seven Joys of Mary –

The Annunciation The Visitation

The Birth of Our Lord Jesus Christ The Adoration of the Magi

The Finding of Jesus in the Temple The Resurrection

The Assumption of Mary

The Franciscan Crown can invite us to a particularly lovely kind of meditation. We can meditate on the Seven Joys of Mary as mysteries of the faith, certainly, but we can also meditate on Our Lady’s joy itself. The Franciscan Crown also offers us a chance to meditate on certain mysteries that we do not find in the Dominican Rosary (traditional Rosary) such as the Adoration of the Magi.

Franciscan lore includes the story of a 15th Century novice who had a deep devotion to the Blessed Mother. He would regularly look for flowers to weave into a crown and place on a statue in her honor, but he was told that his responsibilities as a friar would no longer allow time for him to make these crowns. This led him to despair, and he considered abandoning his vocation. According to the story, the Virgin Mother appeared to the young man and told him that he could honor her by weaving a crown of prayers instead of flowers. She then instructed him to meditate on her Seven Joys. As he prayed, his novice master had a vision of an angel weaving a crown of roses, with a golden lily after every tenth rose. The angel finished by placing the crown on the young man’s head.

ST. FRANCIS OF ASSISI FEAST DAY, OCTOBER 4

St. Francis of Assisi is one of the most influential and inspiring men of faith. His simple, absolute devotion to the Gospel, to prayer, and to poverty are traits that are held in high esteem by the Catholic faithful. Francis was from a wealthy family but gave everything up to live a life of poverty. You have to admire the quiet, peaceful way that he chose to live, as Christ lived. It is said that no one was as dedicated as St. Francis to “imitating the life and carrying out the work of Christ in Christ’s own way.”
