Workplace inspection

Before any work is started, an inspection needs to be done of the job site. Make sure thatyour risk assessment includes:

• Checking that all surfaces are dry, stable and clear of clutter. Be aware of slopes.

• Verifying that all working platforms have edge protection or barriers.

• Identifying location of power lines that you may need to avoid.

• Indentifying locations that may need additional hand grips or barriers.

Equipment

• Be sure you have all the necessary equipment for

starting a job. For working at heights, such

equipment will include body harnesses and

lanyards. Inspect your safety equipment to make

sure that they are in good working condition.

• Inspect the equipment for flaws such as worn or

broken parts. Do not use damaged equipment.

• You will need to decide how you are going to access your job site safely and follow safety measures accordingly.

• Know the weight limitations of all your work platform equipment, such as scaffolds or forklifts

Close off access to the ground below the work site

• The ground below the job needs to be secured to avoid injury to anyone who may pass by. Erect barriers and use “No access” signs.

• Doing so will help you maintain a controlled environment for the workers above.

Practice safety on the job

• Wear the required Personal Protective Equipment

(PPE) such as a hard hat, gloves, safety glasses, steel

toe boots and a body harness.

• Although the ground below your job may be

secured, make sure all workers at heights have their

tools secured to avoid falling objects.

• Lastly, before leaving a job site, be sure that everything

is secured and all tools are put away.
