In the Spirit of St. Francis…

In the Spirit of St. Francis...THANK YOU!

To everyone who helped make the “Not So Spa-ghetti Dinner” a success; our donors: Sherwood Safeway and David Hill Winery; our parishioners, families, and youth that donated their time, talent and treasure: Stephanie Killinger, Meghan Kill-inger, Clare Killinger, Tricia Killinger, Matt Kill-inger, Burke Faber, Kathleen McVicker, Yolanda McVicker, Lauren Cangelosi, Joey Cangelosi, Sally Cangelosi, Joseph Conrow, Angelina Conrow, Catie Felix, Kim Felix, Emma Peterson, Ben Wiren, Josie Wiren, Matthew Wiren, Jeff Wiren, Garrett Schweigert, Austin Grosso, John Paul Grosso, Mike Grosso, Dede Grosso, CeCe Peters, Kolleen Peters, Christopher Gonzalez, Gabrielle Morrow, Angie Johnson, Ryan Fill-inger, Abby Biever, Bob Biever, Jacob Bohanan, Debbie Pulchalski, and Chris Welters and to all who attended and supported the High School Youth Group’s fundraising efforts towards Steubenville NW.

To Kay Erwert for the home baked goodies for the parish office staff.

From the desk of Father James Throughout the Easter season we encounter similar themes and topics each year as we make our way through these Easter days. We began with Easter Sunday when we heard the story of the account of the Lord’s Resurrec-tion. The second Sunday of Easter we heard the story of doubting Thomas, then we heard the story about the disciples and their encounter along the road to Emmaus. This week we encounter the parable of the Good Shep-herd.

It is important for us to take a few moments to reflect on what this parable of the Good Shepard means for us.

Of course we know that Jesus is the Shepherd. He leads us and guides us along the journey that we make through life. Hopefully this journey leads us to eternal life with Him. But Jesus is not the only shepherd out there. There are many other “shepherds” that are in our world that are also trying to lead us. Some of them are okay to follow. . . think about your employer or a school teacher, maybe a member of your family. These are all shepherds and it is important that we follow them. But there are also bad shepherds that want to lead us astray, distracting us and keeping us from drawing nearer to Jesus.

As we take inventory of our lives, it is important for us to look at the different shepherds, or as Jesus calls Him-self in today’s gospel, the “gatekeeper.” We need to make sure that we are placing our trust in “gatekeepers” that are going to allow us to enter into a pasture in which we will be safe. If we go to the wrong gate, to a pas-ture that God does not want us to feed on, then we run the risk of allowing thieves and robbers to overwhelm us.

Jesus wants nothing more than to keep us safe and under His protective care, but ultimately it is up to us. He cannot watch over us and protect us if we choose to enter the wrong pasture or go through a gate that is NOT guarded by our Good Shepherd. Let us take time to examine the gate that we are entering through and let us also learn to recognize our Lord, so we know which gate we can enter through and be safe.

St. Francis Parish would like to welcome all newcomers and visitors.

We turn your attention to the Ministry Table in the narthex of the church where you

will find information on the various ministries in our parish and how to

contact the coordinator. New parishioners are encouraged to register by calling the office at

503-625-6185.

We welcome you as we welcome Christ!

Care Ministry

Assisted Living Centers: Mass and Eucharistic Ministers

Fr. James visits Farmington Square, The Marquis (Tualatin) and Riverwood Assisted Living on a regular basis to celebrate Mass. St. Francis Eucharistic Ministers bring communion to residents in these centers as well. If you have a loved one in any of these assisted living cen-ters, please let staff at the centers know that your loved one is Catholic and would like to go to Mass when it is offered. Please call Jennifer Mirek in the parish office if your loved one would like communion from our Eucha-ristic Ministers during weeks when Mass is not offered.

Preventing Falls: Staying Healthy and On Your Feet

Tuesday, May 9 from 1:00 pm to 2:30 pm at the Provi-dence Newberg Medical Center, Sherwood Room, 1001 Providence Drive, Newberg. As we age, the risk of falling becomes more serious. Falls can often result in a broken hip or other bones. Any injury can lead to lifelong disability. Even if someone is not hurt by a fall, the fear of falling again can limit a person’s ac-tivities. Join Providence experts as they discuss ways you can pre-vent a fall for yourself or someone you love. We hope you can join us! Events are free, registration is requested. To register, please call 800-562-8964. or visit www.providence.org/classes. Sponsored by the Provi-dence Senior Health Program.

"Adoption isn't a birth-mother's rejection but an unconditional love that inspires her to put herself last and do all she can for her baby." ~Mary Hines, Birthmother, StudentsforLife.org. Sunday, May 7 Where All Are Welcomed and Loved With Mercy - Day 784 Iron deficiency is the most common form of malnutrition. It affects cog-nition and a person’s ability to maintain attention. Anemia also disrupts children’s intellectual devel-opment; children with iron deficiency score lower on intelligence tests and have fewer red blood cells. Prevention of iron deficiency is possible through consumption of iron-rich and iron-fortified foods.

May the parents and families of our parish support and encourage our youth and adults to search for, follow, and answer the call of God in their lives. Amen.

We could use some volunteers to help keep our church property green and beautiful. Who can help? Individ-uals, families and church groups can adopt one of our garden areas. Please contact the parish office if you would like to volunteer.
