eDITOR’s LeTTeRDVR has become my new best friend. Flipping through old shows, I came across an all-time

favorite, Entourage. While watching re-runs, I heard Ari on in the background – doing what he does best – verbally abusing Lloyd, a.k.a. Slave. As much as Ari dismantles each human he comes in contact with on the show, we can all learn a few things from this master agent. If you can get past his language, damn he has some memorable lines worth repeating.

What we can embrace is how he conducts business – no prisoners. The word relentless comes to mind and it’s an instinct most people are without. Watch one episode of this famed series and you will begin to see what I’m talking about. Why is this important? Because no matter who you are or what you believe, everyone wants to be KING at some point in their lives – or at least they should. Life is too short to go through aimlessly with no direction or purpose.

‘Excuses are like assholes’ and everyone has them, cliché but loaded with meaning. It doesn’t matter where you came from, how much money you don’t have, how bad your life is, or the state of the economy. Suck it up, grow some balls, and make a life for yourself. Be KING in your world (like Ari) and live without regrets. Moral of the story – always strive to be the best – We do. Now take in our newest creation. Love it. Live it. And most of all, read it. Brandon Brown

WHO We aReBRyoN once made his own custom-made, stylin, waterproof bookbag as a ten-year-old. Now that you know that, your view of him can only get better. He enjoys to ferment sauerkraut and read technical manuals. He hopes to be employed by NASA, but will settle to work on this magazine. At the close of this issue, he put the Editors head on stick and paraded around town chanting “they don’t have an app for that!”

TARA CRIBB set sail from Green Bay, Columbus style, and headed south three years ago in search of a new land to discover in her own name. When she arrived in a strange new place, Milwaukee, she found that the odd natives were a marginally attractive people yet were in dire need of fashion direction. Donning her stylist cape and tights, she has since made it her duty to destroy beyond recognition any tired, preconceived notions of fashion whilst. Her weapons: the written word and a horrific bag of fashion tricks that only she knows. She also accepts gratitude in the form of high fives.

MATT EHRMANN. When asked to settle down, start a family and pick a cubicle to reside in for the next forty years, Matt shouted a hearty ‘nay!’ and decided to pursue yet another bachelor’s degree at UWM, cause you can never have too many of those. The body count continues to rise. When not tracking down leads, he sells communion wine, throws parties on a spaceship and attempts to assemble a dance rock band. He is a sentient being, yes, but is not capable of judgement and only wishes to wage galactic war on the status quo.

LAWRENCE A. CANADA. The Cream City couldn’t have created a better candidate to tell itself about itself than the one and only. Hailing from the North Shore area, Lawrence has taken on the responsibility of finding out everything that Milwaukee has to offer. From the Milwaukee Wine Festival to the Hip Hop olympics, Lawrence has covered all of the major events in and around Southeastern Wisconsin for the past 3 years. A regular on Milwaukee’s scene since 2005, we can all see Lawrence as the Diddy of the city, staying forever young with his H.o.V. swag. A man of many talents, Lawrence is also set to debut his mixtape album “Doned.” in 2010.

and Saturday mornings. Through this class Jeff has been able to enhance his client relationships. “By learning my own body’s limit, I’ve been able to push people to their limit and sub-limits much more effectively,” explains Jeff. Due to the success of boot camp, he landed Milwaukee’s own BIGGEST LOSER on TMJ4 throughout the fall and winter. Contestants aren’t the only ones putting in hard work. Jeff has continued his own body transformation from 4 percent body fat down to less than one percent, sending a message to the contestants on the show that he’s in it with them the whole way. Embracing his parents work ethic – who recently won the 2009 Governor’s Foster Parents of the Year award – Jeff’s been able to realize that hard work isn’t just helping clients lose weight, but also making sure that Impact Ultra Fitness succeeds. He plans to expand myVictory Bootcamp to ten locations from the three that already exist inside gyms throughout Milwaukee. Jeff feels that, “in 2010, the sky’s the limit.” Knowing that in business timing is everything, Jeff is poised to take over Milwaukee’s fitness training scene right on schedule.

With the chilly winter months upon us, Milwaukeeans are constantly looking for new ways to stay warm. Some may opt for a bundle of layers, but newcomer to Wisconsin Avenue – Tai Maki – prefers to crank up the heat.Since opening in September, the restaurant has been serving up traditional Thai dishes with the option of cranking up the spice levels, depending on how adventurous your taste buds are feeling.“Many restaurants lower the spiciness, but we don’t change the scale,” says Duangritt Watanasook, who helps run Tai Maki with manager Phanlop Kiatsirikum. While their heat scale ranges from 1 (mild) to 10 (super spicy), several daredevil eaters order higher, with one customer topping the charts at 25! Their affordable weekday lunch buffet is a popular draw to the business crowd, with selections for meat eaters and vegetarians alike. With a cozy, Thailand inspired interior and a responsive staff, the restaurant has a welcoming atmosphere. For those who prefer not to venture out when temperatures drop, Tai Maki comes to you, delivering during open hours. Don’t worry, you won’t be left out in the cold.

Things just heated up in the Brew City with the release of a new swimsuit calendar featuring twelve months of beautiful ladies and bikinis. Two local entrepreneurs joined their efforts early this year to come up with a creative, desirable idea to promote some of the city’s top venues. MyCity Fan Club Swimsuit Calendar was born. Twelve stunning models – MyCity Promotions -- photographed on location by Seville Media. Each of these featured locations will host a party for the given month, which makes this one gift that keeps on giving for the year to come.

Jeff Winzenried isn’t the typical fitness trainer. He isn’t in the gym pumping iron all day or busting his client’s asses with some made up routine his buddies used to do way back in college. It’s “Always Sunny In Philadelphia” and cheesesteak sandwiches are the trend. But this is Milwaukee – we do cheese better than anyone, but cheesesteak? Brothers Mazin

and Murad answered that question when they stepped on the scene with Chubby’s Cheesesteaks. Inspired by the people who do it best, these two entrepreneurs decided it

it ain’t easy Being cheesyCHuBBy’s CHeese sTeaKs

was time to give Milwaukee cheesesteaks as they were meant to be. Opening the doors in 2007 on the Eastside, Chubby’s has claimed awards including ‘Best New Restaurant’ and ‘Best Cheesesteak.’

Using only the freshest bread and finest ingredients, this spot is a favorite among North Avenue rock stars. With a late night menu full of delicious grub, make sure to save some room and order Chubby’s signature sandwich – Philly with cheese whiz. If you happen to get sloppy dancing the night away at Decibel, don’t risk the DUI – Chubby’s delivers from Bay View to Bayshore. Keeping with the times and protecting college student’s wallets, ‘Recession Happy Hour’ kicks off 3 to 5pm during the week with five-dollar Philly’s. Any way you cook it, this trendy restaurant has it all.

Image is everything. In this world, regardless of gender, beauty is relentlessly sought after and people will go through any amount of pain to look better. Exquisite Threading has the solution, a full facial hair removal or just those pesky hairs growing frantically above the eyes. Threading is all the rage these days. History is vague in regards to who the first creators were, but this beauty process is the end-all be-all to a perfectly shaped brow. Acknowledging this craze, The Hamdan Brothers, along with Akram and Anwer Khan, teamed up to bring threading shops to Milwaukee trendsetters. And with three locations – Mayfair, Brookfield Square, and

Southridge Mall – Exquisite Threading carts leaves no excuse for letting unwanted hairs linger.

What is threading? A certified threader at Exquisite uses a double-sided strand of cotton to twist around individual hairs and then pulls them out from the roots. The advantages outweigh any alternative – threading is faster, less expensive, longer lasting (3 to 4 weeks), truly natural, extremely accurate and virtually painless. Next time you’re out shopping, take a few minutes and stop by Exquisite Threading shops – you’ll leave feeling clean and smooth.

Bryant & Stratton (B&S) college joined Bayshore Town Center and kicked off its first semester in August. With a new campus occupying the Southern part of the mall, B&S is making strides to help students everywhere. Campuses are located in New York, Ohio, and Virginia as well as three locations here in Wisconsin.

Drenched with the newest and best of everything, students are surrounded with technology that would make any geek feel at home. Having the convenience of classes next to fellow neighbors like H&M, Coa, Bar Louie, LA Fitness, and the Apple Store, students never need to leave. But this isn’t what sets B&S apart from the rest. Turbulent times in our economy have forced many people to revaluate their present situation and job. The current unemployment rate in Milwaukee is four percent higher than the previous year. With Bryant and Stratton’s focus on placing students in jobs upon graduation, it’s no wonder they have a 92 percent placement rate.

Staying ahead of the curve and preparing students for the real world has always been essential to the staff at B&S. To keep with the times, they’ve planned to install special computers where students are able to focus on social media networks including Facebook and Twitter. Campus Director Ron Lonzor is an avid believer in the significance of these networks and acknowledges the importance in student’s lives. “We offer a supportive, ongoing commitment that will not only help you get ahead faster, but help you upgrade your capabilities and maximize your marketability throughout your (a student’s) life.”

As a forward-thinking campus, B&S are making strides to keep their carbon footprint low. Storing everything electronically assists in this goal of using less paper and limiting waste. Recycling is at the forefront along with community involvement – giving local artists the chance to display work in hallways and classrooms. The campus offers many things to many people, be it those just graduating high school or those looking to strengthen that resume by adding another degree. It’s never too late to change and B&S is there every step of the way.

Brady Street IS the cultural center of the eaStSIde. A haven for hipsters, university students, and young professionals looking for food, fashion, or just an excuse to get drunk and people watch, this area is diverse and hungry for more. In this tradition of Italian food favorites and new urbanism, we have Crisp. Partners Chris Grant, Ian Pesch, and Rob Settacase, using their experience as promoters and restaurant owners, have set their sights on Brady for their new upscale pizza destination Crisp. Crisp will give you all the traditional pizza fare, in a very non-traditional setting.

Milwaukee’s own Flux Design, made up of a group of designers from MIAD, have been brought onboard to create a postmodern atmosphere that gives you the option of intimate group seating or rowdy walk out pizza to go. Set in a modern rustic wood tone décor, the two story restaurant will include multiple seating sections and booths, an island bar, and an upstairs lounge for a cocktail or three.

The restaurant will include a variety of menu options. High end pizza is the main fare, but options will also include salads, antipasti, and pasta dishes. Food will be offered in a variety of ways. You could order at one

of the bars for some food with your drinks, or sit down for a classic restaurant experience. For those in a hurry take some pizza by the slice at the walk-in counter.

The Brady Street area is well known for its bars. One of the features that give Crisp’s bar some great potential is the inclusion of a public market style juice bar. Fresh squeezed fruit juice is known to make a tasty drink, and we all know a high end cocktail along with some quality pizza is something no Brady Street patron would argue with. The goal of the restaurant is to be a first rate place to meet for food or drink without being pretentious or exclusive.

Also on Crisp’s menu is music. The owners seek to incorporate all types of live music and DJ’s playing everything from deep house to reggae. This all inclusive attitude in an upscale atmosphere will give Crisp an appeal to the wide variety of people and lifestyles in the Brady Street area. The punks, the drunks, the hippies, yuppies, and hipsters, rich or poor-everyone can agree that you can’t beat a good slice of pizza, especially in a classy place at a moderate price.

old World thIrd Street IS a popular Weekend deStInatIon for downtown revelers, however, its history has not been lost among the revitalization. Settled originally by German immigrants, the neighborhood, with its cobbled brick intersection and proud, dramatically lit buildings, is a nod to the past while celebrating the present.

It’s an appropriate fit for Tutto, which has called 1033 Old World Third St. home since October 2007. Co-owners/chefs/brothers Sal, David and Giuseppe Safina, along with Donato Salvo, are carrying on a bit of history themselves: their parents owned Giovanni’s, formerly located on 1683 N. Van Buren St., for over 25 years.

Tutto pays respect to traditional Italian cuisine, but gives it a modern spin at an affordable price point. Giuseppe describes the menu as “American Continental cuisine with a fusion of classic Italian, creating recipes with new and old.”

With an extensive range of offerings, the menu can accommodate an appetite of any size, whether it’s a pre-martini appetizer or a full meal you’re after. Popular small plate items include spicy sweet and sour calamari and homemade meatball sliders, while entrees like veal cotoletta and shrimp scampi are noted favorites.

“Guests that are used to ordering traditional Giovanni’s entrees can order those items any day, any time,” adds Giuseppe. “I also like to do a little experimenting on original family recipes and put my own twist on them.”

Of course, nothing blends as seamlessly as food and family, a notion for which the restaurant is well prepared. The sophisticated, candlelit interior is both sleek and spacious. The main level features roomy dark wood booths, each with its own TV, perfect for catching a game with a group, while the lofted level offers more intimate tables for close conversation. Or grab a seat at the bar to enjoy a specialty martini, which are $5 on Thursday nights and $4 for the ladies on Fridays and Saturdays.

And since no night out on Third Street is complete without a little spin around a dance floor, after your meal you can head on up to Notte (“night” in Italian), for what Giuseppe calls “a universal experience, with dinner and cocktails downstairs and dancing upstairs.”

With all that under one roof, it’s no wonder that Tutto’s name translates to “everything.”

Pak’s Jewelry is the hot-spot for hot ice this winter.

By Michelle Williamson • Photography T.H. Taylor

The lazy days of summer have slipped away and winter has been ushered into downtown Milwaukee. But as the frigid weather whips the city streets into a hustle and bustle, time slows a moment at Pak’s Jewelers, and the world revolves around only one thing – you, the customer. And while Mother Nature may bring the snow, Pak’s delivers the ice.

Since first setting up shop in downtown Milwaukee in 1980, Pak’s has gained a nationwide reputation as the premiere spot for custom jewelry, which is all crafted in-house by their Gemological Institute of America-trained professionals. “People come to us because we’re different, and we make things that are different,” says Gino Pak. He works alongside his brother James and his mother, making this business a family affair. This feeling of inclusion extends to the customer, who can be involved in every step of the design process, from the preliminary sketch to handpicking the color of the stones. The care that goes into each piece doesn’t go unnoticed. According to Gino, the majority of advertising for Pak’s is word-of-mouth. “The quality speaks for itself,” he says.

Big names in the sports and music industries from across the country come calling, knowing that Pak’s can provide sought after and hard to find trends (one currently being black gold) as well as privacy. Behind the red-velvet curtains of the VIP area, clients can watch TV, play pool with friends, or enjoy a cocktail, all while pursuing the wide variety of shine that Pak’s offers. “Clients demand what’s new and what’s hot,” says Gino.

That means nothing is off limits, whether it’s decking out a watch with a halo of diamonds, customizing a knockout cocktail ring, or engraving a child’s gilded ID bracelet. And for those who really like to put their money where their mouth is, Pak’s has the grills covered.

Although Gino describes the typical customer as “showy,” he emphasizes that Pak’s caters to “everyone from A to Z, and will work with you for the best price and quality. “

exCLusIVe Q&a

the Story IS uSually paInt By numBerS…’usually’ being the operative

word. Guy tries out for American Idol once or twice, gets his 15 minutes and

is immediately forgotten about. Yet, Jamar Rogers decided he didn’t feel like

going with the predictable ending and decided to write a new one. Like any good

story with a big, twist ending, you may feel the need to skip to the end. I highly

recommend you indulge those feelings.

4Pm: How was the American Idol audition process in Season 3 different than

it was in Season 8? Did you approach things differently during your second

time around?

Jamar rogers: Well the first difference is that I had way more face time this

go around. When I was on season three, I was only shown in the background

and not really singing. Since Danny and I came as “a package deal” so we were

featured a lot more than others. This go around I tried to think out of the box

when it came to song selection. Still didn’t really pay off…haha.

4Pm: Are you finished with Idol, or are you planning on a third run?

Jr: I was planning on a third run on Idol, but an amazing opportunity came up

when my manager and I were in NY a few months ago. A strange string of events

occurred which I believe all happened for a reason. I definitely believe in fate.

4Pm: Do you think the specter of American Idol following you around is helping

or hindering your music career?

Jr: It definitely helped. A year ago no one cared; I was just bartending at PF

Chang’s and singing at church. Now there are producers that want to work with

me because they saw me on Idol. I have no complaints whatsoever.

4Pm: You’ve played the Riverside Theatre, are you a fan of that venue? Have you

played anywhere else in Milwaukee?

Jr: The funny thing is two weeks before I sang at the Riverside, I saw India Arie

perform there and I said to myself some day I’m going to sing on that stage. I

didn’t know that I’d be doing it only two weeks later. That venue is awesome. I

have never had sound so pristine and clear. I did a show at the Times Cinema

and the World’s Largest Office Party in Lacrosse. I would’ve loved to have done

more venues but contractually I had to keep them to a minimum.

4Pm: What is the most memorable show you’ve ever played, and why?

Jr: When I was 14 I traveled with a group called The American Christian Youth

Chorale. We sang at the White House for President Clinton.

It was pretty cool until we were evacuated because of a bomb threat.

4Pm: Do you prefer to write a song by yourself or with collaborators?

Jr: I love the process of writing songs. I usually start off by myself with my

keyboard and my thoughts. After I’ve written the song I usually take it to another

musician or producer and let them build from there.

4Pm: Which of your own songs do you like the best, and why? Which one has

the most meaning to you?

Jr: There are two in particular. One is called “Medicine Man” and the other is

one I’ve recently finished called “Good Day”. The song “Medicine Man” touches

on me being in my early twenties and addicted to meth. It’s a love song to my

meth dealer, so to speak. It’s melodic, throwback and gritty all at the same time.

Now that I am clean, it makes me realize how far I’ve come and that I can

overcome anything. The other song “Good Day” is about choosing your own

outcome from circumstances and not allowing your circumstances to determine

your outcome!

4Pm: What’s most important in your life, next to music?

Jr: My daughter Freedom and my integrity. I feel as though failure is simply not

an option because I have a mouth to feed besides mine. And, it’s very important

to me that people find me to be a man full of integrity. I believe that if your

character is in place, everything else will fall into place.

4Pm: So how does your story end?

Jr: I have signed with legendary music producer Phil Ramone to produce my

albums! Phil is one of the most respected producers in the industry. I was in

doing an event for Animal Fair Magazine, and the next day I was suppose to

be on a plane home to Milwaukee, but the flight was canceled. We went back

to the hotel and were just hanging in the lobby and we were told by the hotel

doorman to go to this place called ‘Sugar Bar’ on the Upper West side. It’s a

karaoke bar but with a live band. Long story short...I performed “Dock of the

Bay”. Someone approached my manager after the show and asked if I was

signed. This guy Matt Ramone said his father was inside and would love to

meet us. This man ended up being legendary Music Producer Phil Ramone.

Phil has 33 Grammy nominations and 14 Grammy Awards to his name. And

the fact that he saw me perform live and wants to work with me is truly amazing.

It’s an honor to just ‘be’ and work in his presence. Pinch me! I feel like this is

so surreal. Phil has produced albums for some of the most famous artist in

the music industry including: Ray Charles. Billy Joel, Bob Dylan, Quincy Jones,

Paul McCartney, Paul Simon, Frank Sinatra, Stevie Wonder, Bruce Springsteen,

Barbara Streisand...need I say more? I feel so comfortable and confident with the

choices I have made in the past few months. I have been writing like crazy and

am so proud of my new songs. They are my babies. I have been in the studio

surrounded by some of the best people in the business. Everyday day is a ‘Good

Day’...what else can I say?!

lISette gadzurIc IS a true Woman at heart and

loves fashion. As a fashion advocate and stylist icon

for as long as Milwaukee’s known her, an appearance

by Lisette is expected at any notable fashion event in

town. In fact, she plans on planting her fashion seed

by opening a designer boutique right here in the heart

of Milwaukee. With her fashion inspirations stemming

from the very best designers like Gucci, Chloe, and

YSL, we are in good hands. But fashion is merely

of Lisette’s many facets, as she is also renowned

for her charity work. Her foundation, ‘the Gadzuric

Foundation’ is overseeing the ‘Cinderella Project

MKE’, which distributes donated prom dresses to

young girls who cannot afford them.

4Pm: Who is Lisette Gadzuric?

lisette gadzuric: Most importantly I am a mother

to two amazing children, Emiliano (6) and Ahtziri

(1). I also spend a large part of my time working with

different community based organizations in Milwaukee

as well as starting our own foundation (The Gadzuric

Foundation). I model as well.

4Pm: What were some of your favorite experiences

working in the community?

lg: They are all rewarding and unique. I just love the

moments when the people that you are serving truly

feel effected by what you are doing. I also enjoy getting

to know the people that I am trying to help. They all

have such amazing stories and life experiences.

4Pm: I understand you have plans to open a clothing

boutique?

lg: I want to open a fun, young, clothing and

accessory boutique in downtown Milwaukee. I hope

to start with women’s contemporary and branch off

to men’s clothes. I want the boutique to be centered

around denim because great jeans are hard to find

in Milwaukee.

4Pm: What style of clothes?

lg: The main focus will be denim. I think it’s

something that is very hard for women to find. I am

a little obsessed with denim because it took me a

while to find the perfect fit. I hope to focus also on

accessories and casual pieces too.

4Pm: Where do you like to shop?

Urban outfitters and American Apparel are great. I

love what the lovely ladies at Valentina have done with

their new store “Falcon” in the Third Ward. Oh and

of course, Harry Glinberg for that ice! He has some

amazing stuff. Honestly though, I usually shop online

and when I travel.

4Pm: What is it like being married to a Milwaukee

Bucks player?

lg: It has its pros and cons. It is great that I get

opportunities to do great things and meet so many

amazing people. I have made friends in the league all

over the country that I know I will have for the rest of

my life. The downside is that I am essentially a single

parent for 6 months out of the year. We do get to spend

some time together but it’s difficult with his traveling,

games, practice, and community appearances. It is

also hard on the kids when they don’t see him for up

to a week at a time.

4Pm: What are your favorite things that you and your

husband like to do in Milwaukee?

lg: We like to eat, A LOT! We love trying different

foods, spending time with our family & friends and

watching movies. We host a lot of “fight nights” as

well. I am a huge boxing fan and my husband likes

UFC so we have a bunch of friends over to watch the

fights, cookout, swim and just hang out. When we get

a chance to go out is usually to a fundraiser but our

favorite clubs in Milwaukee are 720 or Notte.

Food For ThoughTMILWAUKEE’S HoTTEST RESTAURANTS.

Carnevor is edgy, sexy, and the perfect spot to see some of the famous

celebrities that charm the streets of Milwaukee. Located in one of the

most happening areas in downtown, Carnevor sets the stage to be seen.

Prime beef floods the menu – some imported from Japan – along with an

overwhelming composition of seafood. Getting their sea stock from the

Honolulu Fishing Company, Carnevor applies a ‘24 hour rule.’ No fish can

be out of water for more than twenty-four hours before it’s served – offering

the highest quality, freshest seafood all the time. Grabbing the reins in the

kitchen for his fourth year is Executive Chef Jarvis Williams. He’s ruling

the street with his undeniable talent in the kitchen and use of quality

ingredients on every plate. Giving back is a mantra needed nowadays and

this trendy steakhouse participates as a loyal customer to more than thirty

local farmers and producers during these tough economic times. Gratitude

makes the heart grow fonder and if you’re seeking a plate to remember,

Carnevor is a dream come true.

Look around in Milwaukee and you’re bound to see a burger joint or

some other American style restaurant. Brazilian eateries are a different

story. Sabor is unlike any dining experience, and with David Piette as

Executive Chef, it’s a restaurant with a twist. At Sabor you don’t have to

know your cuts of meat, you just have to enjoy them. A disc-based game

– red light green light – encompasses the experience. Turn your disc to

green and you’ll be served your choice(s) of meat cuts, selected from a

list of twelve, forged in the fires of Brazilian culture and the meat doesn’t

stop. The service comes in waves – includes sides and appetizers with

your main meal, and much like a game of Tetris, the food keeps coming.

When you’re finally ready to wave the white flag, flip your disc over and

voila – the delicious onslaught stops. Toss in a massive salad bar to

balance out the protein and you’ve got a location made for a Gaucho.

Unique is one of those words so overused the meaning is lost, but Sabor

reinstates it’s significance tenfold. After you wake up from the meat-

coma, you’ll be going back from more.

Valet parking usually equates to an overly expensive restaurant

experience, but Mason Street Grill (bonus points if you can figure out

what street it’s on...) is tossing curveballs. The food is Americana, and

if you let the valet treatment scare you off you’ll be crusin’’’ past some

sublime steak and seafood. The slogan is ‘steak, seafood, style’ and

while it’s obvious where the first two come in after a glance at the menu,

where’s the style come in? Use your eyes and ears and direct them at

the stage, where music acts strike up the soundtrack to your Diver Sea

Scallops. If you’ve had your fill of seafood, order a brilliant cut of wood

grilled steak. An evening dining at Mason Street Grill is a customizable

experience right down to the menu. This spot has created a name all on

its own and is one to add to your bucket list.

A hidden gem cradled on Jackson Street in a residential area,

Sanford appears like any other house on the block. The building was

a family owned grocery store for 80 years until it changed over to it’s

current incarnation of one of the most charming locations in Milwaukee

since 1989. It’s still family owned, has that quaint ‘back home’ vibe,

and is considered tops in Milwaukee for fine dining. Change is good,

and Sanford fully embraces such logic. The menu is refreshed daily

and offers multiple types of cuisine. American, French, Mediterranean,

the list goes on. Daily runs to local farmers markets and multiple chefs

working hours before the doors even open for business are the oil that

keeps the Sanford machine running. Keep your eyes open the next time

you’re cruising down Jackson Street.

A common misconception is if you want fine dining, downtown is

where to go. It’s a big world out there and Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse &

Wine Bar is at the center of Brookfield’s contemporary dining experience.

The main menu items – seafood and steak – work in tandem with the

incredible wine list, as any great chow should. Executive Chef Dustin

Green and Director of Wine Marian Jansen op de Haar harness the

perfect storm and bring a creativity to the menu that isn’t found in many

places. Countless restaurants offer a wine list, but Fleming’s spices it up

with the Fleming’s 100. A list of 100 wines including a blend of national

and international tastes, each sold by the glass, along with a Reserve List

by the bottle that will make any connoisseur feel at home. If you don’t

feel like splurging on a Main Filet with Lobster Tail, cruise into the bar

area for Fleming’s “5 For $6 ‘Til 7.” Five glasses of wine, five martinis,

five appetizers, and a Prime Burger – all for six dollars until 7. And thus,

it’s simple. You like wine. You like steak. Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse &

Wine Bar in Brookfield is worth the trip.

Named after the Roman God of wine and intoxication, Bacchus

clearly makes a statement for downtown fine dining. It’s savvy digs

venue to hold your next gathering at, and the reasoning can be summed

up in one word: amenities. The views and high class gathering rooms are

beyond anything in downtown. Plan your wedding reception at Bacchus

and take advantage of the Lake View Private Dining Room, or win over

some new clients over with lunch in the classy boardroom. Known for

its business crowd and old money feel, Bacchus caters to the younger,

Tagged ‘simultaneously rare and well done,’ Mo’s is classy in

ambiance with tons of meaning: a restaurant in Downtown Milwaukee

known for its iconic location and, more importantly, its steak. Despite

the deceptively simple tagline, Mo’s knows the devil is in the details and

it shines through to the final product. Created by Wisconsin’s restaurant

industry legend Johnny V, Mo’s began racking up awards immediately

due to his commitment of quality and service. Gracing the menu are

USDA Prime steaks straight from Chicago’s Stock Yards that are aged in-

house utilizing a secret cache of wet and dry aging techniques. You can

always tell a Mo’s steak from the others – just ask some of the famous

people showcased in plaques on the walls of this steakhouse. With a

new location recently launched in Houston, the brand is expanding on a

national level. Milwaukee will always be the true home for Mo’s – ‘a place

for steaks.’

wine is as siMPle and as coMPlicated as one Makes it. The science behind winemaking requires years of education and according to some, long family tradition to fully comprehend and enact successfully. But the sheer enjoyment of the fruits of this laborious effort should be only that – simply enjoyed.

The pretentious nature of the typical wine connoisseur produces a sense of fear for those restaurant patrons who would like to order wine, but worry they do not have the correct level of sophistication to fully understand the selection. To explore this concern more in depth and how to alleviate it, I recently sat down with local wine expert Chris Wilson – Beverage Manager at Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse and Wine Bar. “At the end of the day, it’s your meal, your experience and your wallet. You should drink what you think tastes good. And if you are new to wine, don’t be afraid to ask for the help of your waiter or restaurant’s wine manager. That’s what they are there for.”

Knowing what you like and dislike is the first step to ordering off a long wine list. If you are a beginner, the best option is be brave and just try something. Wilson adds, “Don’t let wine intimidate you, it’s just grapes.” Discovering what you like about wine is as easy as sampling several varieties. Have patience and don’t worry about not liking some things. “Sending back a bottle of wine will not offend anyone in a restaurant. And if you know that you love white wine, there is no wine police that will storm out of the kitchen when you order a steak to go with it. You know your pallet better than I, trust your tongue.”

For those that would like to experiment in the traditional tasting techniques, Wilson offers the following crash course in wine. The point is to experience the wine with all senses – take it in, really get to know the wine and then decide - do I like this?

First, consider the appearance of the wine - what color is it? Try to stretch your mind past the obvious, if it’s red; is it a deep maroon or more copper? If it’s white, are there hints of green or golden hues? Next, tip your glass over a white napkin. How is the clarity of the wine? Does the intensity of the color change from the deepest part of the glass to

the edge? Do you see sediments floating in the wine? When you right your glass, how quickly do the streaks along the glass, fall? These components describe the type of grapes and the cultivation techniques used to create the wine.

Next, your sense of smell comes into play. Gently swirling the glass of wine allows the previously sealed fluid to oxygenate and releases the intensity of the flavor. Take several whiffs of the glass. You may find that on the second or third go-around, different aromas arise. The bouquet of a wine can vary depending on the entire process of the production of a bottle. The skin of the grapes is very delicate and the fragrances that surround the vines can alter the perfume of the wine. For instance, if there is a pine forest near the vines, a “pineness” can be picked up while smelling the wine.

Finally, the tasting of the wine has several stages. Start with a small sip – what are the initial sensations on your tongue? Is the wine very alcoholic, sweet, acidic? Take another sip - do you notice any of the flavors you smelled a moment ago? Are there any other nuisances you missed while looking at and smelling the wine? Do you taste fruits, spices, dirt or tobacco? And lastly, after spitting out the wine (or my preference, swallowing it), what is the aftertaste like? How long does it linger on your tongue? Does your mouth feel overly sugared or dried out? Did you enjoy it?

Feel free to examine the wine list without feeling judged or hurried. If you are confused, or just beginning with your winescapades, don’t be afraid to ask questions or for suggestions. The staff will guide you through your options and discuss what you intend to eat, how the wine would compliment your food, what your personal preferences are and what your comfort levels are regarding price. Finding your wine preference may take a few attempts, but the procedure should be open and playful. Be aware of what you think tastes good and follow your instincts. And never forget wine is created for pleasure, so have fun and pour yourself another glass. “At the end of the day, drink what you want and enjoy what you drink [Wilson].”

Faux-FuR has made a comeback. With society becoming pro-animal, designers use fur in many ways – from an oversized coat to a fitted vest. Wear this as a casual cover up with denim jeans and a daytime shirt, or glam it out with dark colors and bold accessories. Found at ma Jolie, Lela, Luci Boutique and Forever21.

THIGH HIGH BOOTs are essential in the winter season. This season – the higher the better. Thigh-high boots are the must-have this year and are sweeping the streets. Pulling off this look and not being mistaken for Julia

Roberts twin in Pretty Women can be difficult. It’s crucial to know how to wear them properly. Start with tights or leggings. From there, layer with an oversized coat or blazer to go over a short skirt or dress. Found at aldo Shoes, TJ maxx, Shoo, Bakers and ma Jolie

sequINs are bold, vivid and great ways to spice up every outfit for any occasion. The trick is to avoid a disco flashback. You can wear this with a neutral basic piece, such as dark denim skinny jeans, or a classic fitted tank.

Sequins should fit loose and boxy. Keep in mind that the rest of your outfit should compliment your silhouette. Also avoid conflicting jewelry that will overpower the glam of the outfit. Stick to basic accessories such as bangles, stud, or hoop earrings. Found at Fox Skylight Gallery of antiques, Lela, Luci Boutique, Forever21, express and Lorena Sarbu Beverly hills.

a MILITaRy JaCKeT adds a sleek and polished look to any outfit. This versatile piece accentuates a neutral elegance with any feminine ensemble.

Go rocker chic – layer it over dark skinny jeans or black shinny leggings. Don’t forget to wear some killer stilettos. The key to pulling this off is not to over accessorize because you will clash with the detailing and ornate designs of the jacket.

A military-inspired jacket is also a great addition to a true bohemian look. Add a pair of over-the-knee boots, Foho patterns, and lots of light layers. Don’t be afraid to try something new. Found at Lela, ma Jolie, Luci Boutique and Forever21.

polItIcS, man. To me, it’s more fun to chew rocks

than to argue politics with anyone, and yet no matter

which way I face I wind up staring down that slippery

slope. So hey, let’s go there. Winston Churchill once

stated ‘some men change their party to suit their

ideas, some men change their ideals to suit their

party.’ I know, I know, Churchill is so damn quotable

I wanna slap him five. I heard his quote a few days

ago and it dredged up some incendiary memories.

Anyone remember the political conventions aired

this time last year? I watched ‘em. Particularly, I saw

the Republican National Convention.

It was your typical political convention

so I didn’t expect to hear much in

the way of plans or answers and I did

expect to hear a lot of USA! USA! and

I wasn’t let down. (The Democratic

Convention was the same, I’m not

playing favorites, save the hate mail.)

Where I’m going with this is that I

saw something interesting as the

ceremony wrapped. The camera

panned the crowd to show all the

red tie wearing geriatrics showing

approval for their party, and that’s

when I got to put a face to something

that’s been bothering me for years.

This bro was around the age of

22, had a muffin patch goatee, short,

over-gelled hair and a douchebag

smirk on his face as the camera

provided him with a close-up. He

pointed at himself and continued

smirking at the camera whilst

nodding slowly, as if to say ‘f yeah I’m the man and

I just banged your mom, goddamn right.’ Without

literally saying it, he was basically screaming ‘I’m

better than you’ into the camera. I wondered

why. He looked like he had made a wrong turn

somewhere and wound up at the RNC instead of

his real destination, a fraternity house party where

he would attempt to put his arm around drunk

girls way out of his league and spit chew gunk

everywhere. He was a stupid ape happy to get his

7 seconds on camera to showcase the fact he had

found a gang to belong to. Perhaps he didn’t get

enough hugs as a child.

I hit the roof because this kid embodied a fatal

flaw patterned into the way voters operate today. A

lot of people treat the most important free election

in the world as though they were voting for which

club is better. Not the policies, the plans, or the

man, but which club is sweeter than the other. What

this kid was doing was acting like he’s the man

not because John McCain was the embodiment

of everything he wants to believe in a politician,

but because he, that friggin’’ smirking kid, was a

Republican and goddammit for some reason that

made him better than anyone else. I’ll bet you my

good eye that if you grilled that kid on what John

McCain’s foreign policies were, he’d smirk, grab his

crotch and scream ‘whatev’’, bro, kegstaaaaaand!!’.

People who vote for the party just because it’s ‘their’

party and not because they agree or even know

what any of their party representative’s policies and

strategies are should be dragged into a public area

and smited. The party lines blur all over the place

and people in the Democratic party sometimes

side with the Republicans and vice versa, yet non-

thinking knuckle draggers like this kid and millions

of other small minded people over this nation think

that anyone who is a Republican is his ‘bro’, and

anyone who is a Democrat can just go suck it, yeah

man. It’s not just Republicans, Democrats do it too.

Zombies like this have hijacked our democracy, tied

it to the railroad tracks and sent a train of bright,

shining idiocy bearing down on it. I’m fairly certain

this Mason politic rhetoric wasn’t the idea when

we started this democracy in the

first place. Vote for the man and his

policies because you believe in them,

because voting for the party just

because it’s your party is fraternity

bullshit. If you don’t get down the

with Democratic or Republican

candidates, find someone running

who is closet to the ideals you look

for in a leader and vote for them. The

more choices we have, the better off

we are and the less likely pinheads

like that smirking douchebag at the

RNC will play softball with the issues

and vote based on fraternity instead

of action.

And no, it doesn’t matter to me

who you vote for...as long as you

have a reason to be voting for that

person. Talking politics is like walking

around with land mine shoes, you’re

screwed the second you take the first

step and I prefer to just vote instead

of convince people to ‘see it my way’ in regards

to who I’m voting for. I’m not going to crucify you

for voting for who you believe in even if I disagree

with it. I won’t crucify you, based on one condition.

If I ask you who you voted for and you answer ‘X

Politician’ and you say because you feel his foreign

policy experience is superior, then fine, you’ll get my

respect because you have a reason. But if I ask you

who you’re voted for and you answer “X Politician’

and I ask you why and you respond ‘because I’m a

Republican and so is he’, I’ll nail you down.

suP Brah!has democracy degenerated into an argument over which club is better?
