FROM THE RECTOR 4 May 2014 Dear Friends, This weekend is one of thanksgiving and celebration as we dedicate our new organ which will be used to beautify and enhance our worship and so give glory to God.

We also hope this wonderful new musical instrument will be a cultural asset to the local community and the whole community on the Northern Beaches and beyond. In the story of the disciples on the road to Emmaus in this Sunday’s gospel, Luke elaborates a whole presentation of the Easter faith for all generations who must believe without seeing: it is necessary to journey for a long time before the cross ceases to appear as an obstacle but shines as the source of salvation. We must give Christ time to teach us the meaning of the scriptures: at the Eucharistic table we recognise his presence and so are enabled to announce to our brothers and sisters that he is living. With every blessing, Fr Steven Salmon, Rector

PARISH NEWS Baptism: We welcome Alyssa Lynne and Caitlyn Teresa Fox into the family of the Church through the Sacrament of Holy Baptism at 2:30pm today. Please pray for Alyssa and Caitlyn, their parents and the i r godparents, as they rejoice in sharing with us the Christian faith. Music notes for today’s Family Eucharist: After an exciting weekend of music-making we are delighted to begin celebrating the work of the Australian composer, Dr Colin Brumby, who composed this mornings anthem a few months ago, and the Kyrie from Missa Sanctae Cecilia, composed especially for the choir, and which you will hear much more in coming months. The rest of the mass setting is by the French Romantic composer Charles Gounod (1818-1893), most famous for his grand operas. This mass is a simple but beautiful declamation of the mass text. In keeping with the French theme the voluntary this morning, Fanfare, is by Gounod's contemporary the Belgium composer Jacques-Nicolas Lemmens (1823-1881).

St John’s Organ Celebration Weekend concludes at 6:00pm this evening (4 May); Evensong will be sung by The Cathedral Singers, a group formed in 1989, dedicated to excellence in church music, performing a wide repertoire from the 16th to 21st centuries. Manly Hospital Pastoral Care Service needs volunteers! The service was developed by the hospital and local churches in co-operation, and is based on providing pastoral visitations by lay people to patients in hospital. Pastoral Care Visitors from the churches are trained in areas of hospital procedures, communication etc. and visit on a regular basis (usually weekly) within the hospital. Visitors also attend regular monthly meetings for support and ongoing education. For further information, please speak with Lynette Johnson or see the flyer on the lobby noticeboard. Cottage Counselling operates regularly in the Parish Centre with support from St John’s. Please pray for the service, the counsellors and their resources, giving thanks for their work, and that this important ministry may continue meeting the needs of the local community. Cottage Counselling now has Deductible Gift Recipient status with the ATO and can provide receipts for tax deduction purposes to donors. The Centre may be contacted at 7 Clarke St, Narrabeen 2101, by phone on 02 9972 0141 or through www.cottagecounselling.org.au Street Mission Wednesday Night Café: Street Mission operates cafes in Sydney’s northern beaches region, serving over 300 meals each month using a 100% volunteer workforce. Many of their clients who include adults and their children, have medical issues and life is tough for them. The St John’s Street Mission Café is open on Wednesday nights, providing a nutritious meal (eg chicken curry and rice, fresh vegetables and dessert) and a supportive atmosphere. As we continue to pray for this work, if you wish to consider being trained and rostered to volunteer, please leave your name and contact details with the office to be passed on to Street Mission. It is necessary that volunteers help on a rostered basis, receive induction training, give undertakings concerning confidentiality, privacy and child protection, obtain references and be willing to have a police check if required. “Welcoming the Stranger” at St John’s: Please pray for “Relationships Australia”, “Community Connect”, “Cottage Counselling”, “Street Mission”, and other community groups working to help people who in different ways may be “on the outer”, and for friends, musical events and functions supporting these and other supported ministries such as Bear Cottage. These are in addition to our own regular ministry programs.

Rosters – Rosters – Rosters!!! Now that Bev is preparing the next round of rosters (June to September 2014), we need more people to volunteer for helping, particularly with weekly church cleaning and grounds upkeep , and on the Tuesday/Friday cafe . If you can help, please contact Bev Bingham, or phone/email the office for Bev to call you.
