    1 INT. HOSPITAL - ROOM -- DAY

    BLACK, blurry SCREEN.

    Then, SLOWLY,

    PERSONS P.O.V: Their eyes SLOWLY open, gradually, at firstgiving DEFOCUSSED screen, gray, smudged shapes...

    Gradually they RESOLVE TO...

    A PERSON, leaning down over us, staring at us, in a whiteroom, maybe a medical ward.

    NURSEHello? Are you awake? Can you hearme?

    CUT TO:

    Normal shot.

    FLORENCE, lying in the bed, A NURSE looking down over her.

    NURSECan you see anything?

    FLORENCEI... Yes, I...

    NURSE(big woman, jolly, too

    jolly...almost sinister)Good, very good, and-

    FLORENCEWho am I?

    NURSEI am the Nurse, and youre mypatient.

    LATER NOW, different people in the ward, busy with otherpatients, tending to wounds, rushing round.

    Sitting in the middle of it all, on her chair...

    FLORENCE.

    OLDER FLORENCE (V/O)I woke up, on a strange world. Ihad no memories, I was like a blankcanvas.

    The Florence voice-over is slightly different to her currentvoice; OLDER, WISE, SADDER, very melancholy.

    CUT TO:

    3 EXT. GARDEN -- DAY

    A hospital type garden, all green, fountains, flowers. Lotsof PATIENTS in HOSPITAL GOWNS wandering around, clutchingonto the arms of NURSES.

    FLORENCE is sitting by a nice, wishy-washy-wishy FOUNTAIN,watching the water splash onto the little pebbles... Lovely.

    OLDER FLORENCE (V/O)I didnt know who I was...

    CUT TO:

    4 INT. SCHOOL -- DAY

    LONG ROWS OF TABLES, CHAIRS... Its an older students typeuniversity, adults, all of them...

    A PROFESSOR is tapping a BLACKBOARD with his cane.

    FX: When he taps it, LONG FORMULAS write themselves on it inCHALK!

    All the STUDENTS take notes, the professor ASKS QUESTIONS.

    OLDER FLORENCE (V/O)I knew what they told me, ofcourse.... That this place, was aplanet, called Nolita, an earthtype planet, and the year was twothousand, two hundred and seventy.

    All the students are sitting with HANDS in AIR, reallyeager! They know the answer! Theyre all very keen!

    VOICEOVER FADE OUT.

    All except for FLORENCE, who sits, with her head down,

    staring at the floor.

    PROFESSORFlorence? Do you know?

    Beat.

    FLORENCE...No sir. No, I dont.

    All the other students laugh. Humiliated, Florence bendsdown, head low;

    OLDER FLORENCE (V/O)They sent me to a school, toeducate me. I said, I didnt wanteducating. I knew that once, onceupon a time, I knew things. I hadan identity, a life. I want itback, but they wouldnt give it tome.

    CUT TO:

    5 INT. SCIENCE ROOM -- DAY

    HUGE TANKS, as wide as a car, long as a bus, are linedthrough the room.

    Theyre filled with PRESERVATIVES, colored liquids, growthserums...

    Floating in them are, curled up, embryonic humans.

    OLDER FLORENCE (V/O)And then I found out. They wiped mymemory, because they knew who Iwas. Because they were scared ofme, because they knew I was theonly person who could stop whatthey were doing. Whoever I am. Costhis planet, it had a secret...

    FLORENCE is being given a tour, along with some of theSTUDENTS, by an IMPORTANT SCIENTIST

    IMPORTANT SCIENTISTSo we grow clones, of everyone onthe planet, and then every personhas a donor for organs, a donor forblood, every human can live forthree hundred years!

    Florence looks confused

    FLORENCESo... everyone on the planet hasclones? And then they live offthem? Farm them? Suck out theirlife force?

    IMPORTANT SCIENTISTSuccinctly, yes!

    FLORENCEThats not fair. Thats evil. This

    system is evil...

    OLDER FLORENCE (V/O)-And then... Then I remembered.

    FLORENCENo, Im not staying. Im leaving.This is wrong!

    All the students, scientists, WATCH her. Not worried. Thescientist is laughing slightly, at his own private joke.

    IMPORTANT SCIENTISTAh, Florence. Problems?

    FLORENCE(furious)

    How can you not see!? This iscompletely sick!

    IMPORTANT SCIENTIST(unconcerned)

    Youre leaving us then?

    FLORENCE

    Yes!

    Like he knows something she doesnt.

    ECU: FLORENCE! Her EYES are SO ANGRY, staring hatefullyahead!

    We PAN AROUND HER, watching her, in EPIC CLOSE-UP as shestands there.

    FLORENCEIm Florence. Im a fighter. Imgonna save this planet.

    CUT TO TITLES:

    6 EXT. CITY -- DAY

    The city is COBBLESTONED, quiet architecturally nice, allCURVES, SWOOPING SHAPES, BRIDGES, mostly made of stonerather than metal, red brick.

    FLORENCE stands there, looking round, in the street. PEOPLEare milling all around, but she stands there looking sortof... lost.

    Detached from it all.

    Shes still wearing the HOSPITAL GOWN, and shes huggingherself- its cold!

    Then, all of a sudden, no warning...

    PRAC FX: It starts to rain! Really, really, pouring,chucking it down! Its soaking!

    PLITTER-PLATTER-PLITTER-PLATTER!!

    Most PEOPLE begin to run indoors, get under shelters, butFlorence doesnt.

    The rain SPLASHES off the stoned floor, great big SPLOSSHES!

    Beat.

    Then, slowly, Florence begins to WALK away, slowly, and wesee...

    CU: Shes BAREFOOT!

    Hugging herself, she walks, really slowly, under a BIG ROUNDBRIDGE...

    CUT TO:

    7 EXT. BRIDGE - UNDER BRIDGE -- DAY. CONTINUOUS

    Under the BRIDGE, just like under a bridge in any big city-load of trash, some graffiti. This is the future, but itlooks just like now... This isnt a great place.

    FLORENCE looks around, and then...

    A GREAT BIG SIGH.

    She slides slowly her back down the side of the bridge,until shes HUNCHED over on the floor, with her head in herhands.

    Thinking, lost, lonely. Her memories are coming back, andtheyre not good ones.

    Then, all of a sudden...

    In front of her is a manhole, and with a little:

    RAT-AT-AT-AT-TAT-ATAT

    It POPS up, and a MAN pulls himself out!!

    He looks at her, bends right down, his face an inch fromhers.

    She looks up, slowly. Sees him. Slowly, deliberately, she...

    SLAPS him in the face!! HARD!

    He steps back, gingerly, straightens up, and puts an hand onhis cheek. Feels it.

    And he starts to LAUGH!! Hard, like its the best thingever.

    He TURNS back to the manhole, and SHOUTS down it!

    MANHOLE MAN

    Its all right, number twelve! Thisones definitely her!

    Florence stands up, approaches him.

    FLORENCEWhat do you mean? This ones her?How can you know who I am?

    MANHOLE MANFlorence Watson.

    Beat.

    FLORENCEHow can you know? I only... My mindis drained, empty... I rememberonly fragments of it myself.

    MANHOLE MANWe watch, we observe. We see... weknow everything in this city. Thisplanet. We have to.

    FLORENCEWho are you?

    As she says it, SILENTLY, stealthily, from the MANHOLE,climb SIX or SEVEN men, all in BLACK BODY SUITS, a bit likediving suits, wet suits, they have a hood, and theyrewaterproof, shiny, skintight.

    The MEN stand behind the first man, manhole man, and allspeak together...

    MANHOLE MENWe are the clones.

    8 INT. SEWERS. TUNNELS -- DAY

    A HUGE, CIRCULAR TUNNEL, under the CITY, with STONE WALKWAYSjutting out from either side, and below that, huge, dirty,SEWAGE, flowing, ROARING! Really LOUD!

    FLORENCE is walking along the PATHWAY, in a LINE of people;MANHOLE MEN, led by MANHOLE MAN. They walk along, silently.

    FLORENCEWhy am I coming with you again?

    MANHOLE MANCos you feel the same way we do.Cos you feel. Cos what they do,harvesting people, is wrong. Costhe clones, we can feel, we arealive, whatever they say. And thatmakes it murder, On a massive

    scale, and you can help usFlorence.

    FLORENCEYou sound like-

    She trails off

    MANHOLE MANSound like?

    CU: MANHOLE MAN. Its hard to tell, but he looks worried.Scared.

    And she trails off again, and they continue walking, insilence.

    MUSIC: WISH by BEAUTIFUL CREATURES

    FLORENCE, the CLONES, MANHOLE MAN, all SITTING, TALKING!

    FLORENCE is leaning back, on the floor, SHOES OFF.

    FLORENCESo... what are you trying to do?Why do you live down here?

    MANHOLE MANWe hide. Were hiding. Cos, thingis, youve seen the way they treatus, clones. We wouldnt last aminute, up there.

    FLORENCE

    But who are you?

    MANHOLE MANWere the clones. Thats all wehave, all we know. Were defined byour genes, our parents, the realus...

    Like a TUBE STATION, but much more HIGH-TECH, SHINY, STEEL,SILVER. The platform is long, CONCRETE.

    Standing on it are a loads of COMMUTERS, with their papers,briefcases, little polythene containers full of coffee; theworks!

    Standing in the middle of them, is A MAN in a suit. He looksthe same as them, wears the same clothes, carries hispapers... hes even got a little mug of coffee. But... hesdifferent; hes a clone. And the other people know it.

    The atmosphere is hostile, aggressive, provocative. Theother commuters begin to bunch around him.

    COMMUTER #1Ere, look, its a clone! Who letyou out then? Your master must be asoftie!

    COMMUTER #2

    COMMUTER #1Hes all dressed like hes going towork... where would he be going?Hes not even allowed a job?

    COMMUTER #3Yeah, the bosses see to that!

    They begin to surround him, edging him away.

    CU: THE CLONE. He looks scared, and sad. Like he knew it wasalways inevitable.

    COMMUTER #1(gentle, quiet)

    Look, thing is, we dont want youout here. Youre not even real. Youdont have a job, so stop acting.You, are just a specimen. Anexperiment. For us.

    COMMUTER #2Yeah, you were born inferior-

    COMMUTER #3-Created inferior... you were born,to die

    COMMUTER #1So what were saying, is go away.Cos youre not proper. Youreworthless. And, um, we dont likeyou.

    COMMUTER #2So go away, yeah?

    They have EDGED him closer to the edge, of the platform...Hes DANGEROUSLY close now!

    He doesnt try to resist, is sort of accepting of his fate.

    And, slowly, he crumples.

    Dead.

    Then, with a....

    WHAAAAHEEEESSSSHHHHH!!!!

    The TRAIN arrives, smooth, silver, shaped like a bullet!

    It SLIDES into the platform, FAST, then-

    Suddenly STOPS dead, immediately- high technology!

    And as though nothing has happened, unashamed, the commutersBOARD the TRAIN, talking, nicely, making jokes.

    The doors WHAAATHHHUUUUUM shut, and the TRAIN, all of asudden...

    Gone.

    PULL BACK TO:

    11 INT. METRO STATION - HOLE -- DAY

    Crouched, TIGHT, inside a little CUBBYHOLE, viewing thePLATFORM, is FLORENCE, MANHOLE MAN, and a few of his MANHOLEMEN, watching.

    We can tell from their expressions they saw everything.

    FLORENCEWhat happens to them? How are theypunished?

    MANHOLE MANTheyre not.

Thats why we hide,in the sewers, under the city...some try to live a normal life,like him... they all end up dead.Others, try to accept it, behave...theyre farmed for every organ intheir body.     PRAC FX: GIRDERS and METAL STRUTS fall, TWISTED METALCRASHING DOWN.

    THE DOCTOR is desperately hammering BUTTONS, runninground...

    FLORENCE is crouched on the floor, HANDS around her head-not scared, just practical

    THE DOCTORIts too strong! Its... Its usdragging us in, into its jaws! Im

    THE DOCTORFlorence, I cant watch you die,Im going to perform an emergencytemporal shift on you, send yousomewhere, out the way... save you

    FLORENCENo, but.... but you cant, I wantto be here with you, and-

    THE DOCTORTheres no point us both dying.Anyway, Ill be okay. Come get youwhen this is over.

    And he gives a GREAT BIG GRIN

    FLORENCEBut-

    But too late, he THUMPS a button, and she..

    FX: FADES AWAY

    BEAT.

    He stands there, looking, watching where she was...

    Not grinning anymore.

    13 INT. METRO STATION - HOLE -- DAY

    FLORENCE gasps, as though in pain- suddenly remembering...

    FLORENCEThe Doctor, he... is he okay?

    MANHOLE MANHes coming back for you, we know,trust us.

    CU: MANHOLE MAN: His face, illuminated dimly, lit from theside, an aristocratic, noble face... Mysterious. Secretive.

    He CLUTCHES her hand with both of his. We suddenly realize,how big he his, how powerful.

    A fighter. But gentle, and he looks at her.

    MANHOLE MANIve told you, Im helping, Imhere to help. Im the only personwho can, cos youre a dead manwalking now, they know youre withus, siding with us. And you canhelp us. Please!

    14 EXT. RESTAURANT -- DAY

    FLORENCE and another CLONE REBEL, standing, watching, so noone could see, a bit hidden, along with MANHOLE MAN

    The restaurant has SEATS out on the pavement, people sittingdrinking.

    A FEW CUSTOMERS with nice drinks, and then...

    A MAN APPROACHES; a clone.

    He tries to sit down, and tries to beckon THE WAITER

    Theres some murmuring of voices, bits we can hear...

    WAITERSir, I cant serve you... are you aclone? You are, please, not myestablishment...

    The clones a man on a mission, trying to make a point, afreedom fighter, rebel.

    Dead man walking.

    CLONEYes, yes. Im a clone.

    Another customer stands up, and then...

    CUSTOMERYou... you, cloney boy. Organfarm... youre in our cafe

    CUSTOMER #2We dont like it!

    A TABLE is thrown!-

    -Someone hurls a GLASS of DRINK-

    -It smashes!-

    -The clone stands, raises his hands!-

    -Not fighting...-

    -Hes knocked over, by some customers-

    -He stumbles, on his back!!!-

    -Vulnerable!!!-

    -The waiter is indecisive, not wanting to commit-

    Then, all of a sudden, decided-

    -Rolls up his sleeves, stands over the clone-

    -The clone is bleeding, raises his arms-

    -refuses to defend himself!!!-

    And we pull back, as gradually, they sit back...

    FLORENCEHow could that happen?

    MANHOLE MANIt happens all the time! This isnormal... Just another jumped upcloney boy, trying to prove apoint, be a rebel, a freedomfighter... Cos being in a tombachieves a lot, doesnt it? Sostupid...

    FLORENCEYou care about them... care aboutthem all.

    MANHOLE MANTheyre so young... he was onlyjust birthed today, or yesterday;Probably only been given half hismemories, half his originalsmemories. Some of them dont evenget that their clones... thinktheyre the real deal. The genuinearticle... cos the clones, theyinherit the real bodies memories.Some of them really walk into thoserestaurants, sit on those buses.

    They dont even realize they dontown those bodies, till...

    15 EXT. STREET -- DAY

    A RALLY, MARCH type thing... A demonstration, a RIGHT WINGtype party, BANNERS, bit of BLACK LEATHER.

    Theyve got some kind of salute, bit sinister, they make a

    clutching gesture at their chest, with a clawed hand; tosymbolize that theyre real, their heart is real

    Theyre sinister, violent, militant, fascist...

    Their LEADER is speaking, on a little podium, to the CROWDSin the street.

    CU: THEIR FACES

    Loving it. Adoration.

    Hes got SHORTS, tucked in SHIRT, little COMB-OVER, not too

    obvious.

    LEADER(proper rant,fueled by hate)

    We WILL purge the clone from oursociety! Clean ourselves, of theirpresence! They must beremoved! Like a cancerous tumor inthe body, they must be cut out!Allow the healthy! Living! Cells!To! Flourish!

    The crowds SCREAM... they love him. All do the little

    SALUTE.

    LEADER (CONTD)We have grown weak, and soft...Given them rights! They are aresource! A body bank! Yet now, weare beginning to grant them rights!Allow them on our streets! This iswrong! We must correct themistakes, of this government!

    PULL BACK TO:

    HIGH SHOT, of all the crowds, jumping, screaming, banners,flags...

    16 EXT. BACK ALLEYS -- NIGHT

    The leader has incited violence... next few scenes are aseries of FAST CUTS though this violence;

    A [CLONE] is exiting the SMALL BACK DOOR of a square
