Dear Audience Members,

When we, the creators of HAIRSPRAY, first started licensing the show to high-schools andcommunity theatres, we were asked by some about using make-up in order for non-AfricanAmericans to portray the black characters in the show.

Although we comprehend that not every community around the globe has the perfectly balancedmake-up (pardon the pun) of ethnicity to cast HAIRSPRAY as written, we had to, of course, forbid any use of the colouring of anyone's face (even if done respectfully and subtly) for it isstill, at the end of the day, a form of blackface, which is a chapter in the story of race in Americathat our show is obviously against.

Yet, we also realized, to deny an actor the chance to play a role due to the colour of his or herskin would be its own form of racism, albeit a politically correct one.

And so, if the production of HAIRSPRAY you are about to see tonight features folks whose skincolour doesn't match the characters (not unlike how Edna has been traditionally played by aman), we ask that you use the timeless theatrical concept of suspension of disbelief and allowyourself to witness the story and not the racial background (or gender) of the actors. Our showis, after all, about not judging books by their covers! If the direction and the actors are good(and they had better be!) you will still get the message loud and clear. And hopefully have agreat time receiving it!

Thank You,Marc, Scott, Mark, Tom & John

Chairman's WelcomeI am delighted to welcome you to Baltimore and ourfirst production of the year, the ever glam, hip and cool'Hairspray'. We'll be taking you on the journey of TracyTurnblad as she attempts to go from small town girl, with a big heart, to teen idol righting a few wrongsand turning expectations on their head along the way.

'Hairspray, The Broadway Musical' originally openedon Broadway in 2002 and has played to packedhouses and had audiences on the edge of their seatsever since. Those fans of the musical and film, will nodoubt recognise some of the musical numberstonight. Beginning with 'Good Morning Baltimore'

leading to the grand finale 'You Can't Stop the Beat',the sixties sound, style and feel is captured beautifully by this show and we hope you willenjoy your visit to Baltimore.

Thanks must be given to our passionate and devoted production team, without whom thisdemanding show would not have been possible. They have coached and encouraged ourcast to perform better and achieve more each week and for this, we are indebted to you. Thanks also go to our talented and dedicated cast; many of whom are young performersjoining our long-standing BOS members. Backstage will be bustling with our acting andnon-acting members alike and without their support, staging our high quality productionswouldn't be possible.

A special thank you to our backstage crew and technicians, our rehearsal accompanist CarlSchofield, our stalwart front of house and box office teams, committee members and allthose ardent volunteers who give of their time to make our shows possible.

My sincere thanks to the Southport Dramatic Club, for allowing us to perform in thiswonderful theatre and finally to you our audience, for your continued support. This is a trulyexciting show to present as my first year as Chairman and I hope you will all enjoy it asmuch as we have had rehearsing. Sit back, as we say 'Welcome to the 60s' and a differentkind of revolution.

Director’s NotesI was thrilled to have been given the opportunity to direct Hairspray. Hairspray is a hugecelebration of family, music, dance and joy, but one that speaks directly to the issues ofracism and bigotry which in some ways are still as much of a challenge today as they werein 1960s Baltimore.

I love the message at the heart of Hairspray which teaches us to celebrate who we are andto see the beauty within every one of us. The characters show that we can achieve ourdreams with self belief and of course a little can of hairspray!

It has been great fun once again to work with Charles and Mary and I am so grateful fortheir support. It has also been a pleasure to work with such a talented and enthusiasticcast. It is particularly rewarding to know that we have provided some of our youngermembers, who are appearing on stage for the first time, the opportunity to develop theirconfidence and to learn how to work with people of all ages and from all walks of life. I feelpassionately that this is what amateur theatre should be about... theatre for all!

I hope tonight that the cast's energy and enthusiasm will transcend the footlights and youwill leave the theatre dancing in the aisles! I leave you with the following quote from thewriter of Hairspray: "It wasn't until I started reading and found books they wouldn't let usread in school that I discovered you could be insane and happy and have a good life withoutbeing like everybody else." What a lovely world it would be if we all shared that ethos!

SynopsisBaltimore, 1962: Tracy Turnblad is a big girl and her wildest ambition is to be one of the"Nicest Kids in Town", a group of trendy teenagers that appear in a daily TV show (TheCorny Collins Show), where the newest hits are played and everyone knows the coolestdance movements. One of those TV idols gets most of Tracy's attention: junior heartthrobLink Larkin, who is dating the most beautiful girl of the lot, of course.

Tracy's dad owns a joke shop and her mum Edna runs a laundry. The heroine herself spendsmost of her time at high school in detention because to keep up with latest fashion sheteases her hair as high as she possibly can with masses of, you guessed it, hairspray.

Tracy and her timid friend Penny meet Seaweed J Stubbs and befriend him, for he knowssome great new moves and is good fun to be with. There is only one drawback: he iscoloured and this was a major issue back then (she says, as if today was so different). Withhis help however she manages to get onto the Corny Collins Show, for its host is all forprogress. But when Tracy realises that her new friends cannot dance with her on the show, she is outraged. Seeing that she believes "integration is the new frontier", she plans aprotest in front of and inside the TV studio. This ends up in prison, as the racist producer ofthe show calls the police and has them all arrested.

When all hope seems lost, Link Larkin decides he indeed does love Tracy, who he admiresfor her courage, personality and talent. He frees Tracy from her cell and together with theirfriends they plan to crash the Miss Hairspray Contest, which is broadcast nationwide. Thisleads to the show's amazing finale.

To find out whether Tracy succeeds and how her grumpy housewife mother turns into astunning Diva, just sit back and see for yourself!

Our next ‘Glorious’ production!

Bringing Charles Dickens' beloved novel to life, Lionel Bart's 'Oliver!' takesaudiences on a wild adventure through Victorian England. Join young, orphanedOliver Twist as he navigates the London's underworld of theft and violence, searching for a home, a family, and - most importantly- for love.

When Oliver is picked up on the street by a boy named the Artful Dodger, heis welcomed into a gang of child pickpockets led by the conniving, butcharismatic, Fagin. When Oliver is falsely accused of a theft he didn't commit,he is rescued by a kind and wealthy gentleman, to the dismay of Fagin's violentsidekick, Bill Sikes. Caught in the middle is the warm-hearted Nancy, who istrapped under Bill's thumb, but desperate to help Oliver, with tragic results.

With spirited, timeless songs such as "As Long as He Needs Me," "Food, GloriousFood," and "Where is Love," Oliver! is a musical classic.
