Congratulations on the purchase of your new MSAEvolution 4100 Thermal Imaging System! Thishand-held unit provides advanced thermal imagingtechnology backed by years of MSA quality,dedication, and service.
The Evolution 4100 Thermal Imaging Camera(TIC) is designed to assist firefighters to see inlow visibility conditions of smoke and darkness.This high definition thermal imaging cameraprovides the latest in available thermal imagingtechnology for the fire service.
FEATURES AND BENEFITS
The Evolution 4100 Thermal Imaging Camera(TIC) can be used to aid firefighting in scenariossuch as:

BEFORE USE / DESCRIPTIONThe Evolution 4100 TIC is a highly sophisticatedpiece of electronic equipment. The unit wasdesigned to withstand the firefighting conditionsof heat, driving spray, and frequent impactnormally seen by a firefighter. Extension of thesedemands may damage the camera and render itinoperable. It is not recommended that thecamera run for extended periods, particularly inhigh-heat conditions.
The Evolution 4100 TIC is intended as an aid tofire and rescue operations in conditions of poorvisibility created by smoke and darkness. It is nota replacement for standard firefighting techniquesand precautions. Users must ensure that the firedepartment’s standard operating procedures arefollowed while using the camera.
ABOUT THE CAMERA The Evolution 4100 TIC is:
• equipped with a state-of-the-art microbolometerthermal detector to provide the clearesthigh-definition images available in fire andnon-fire environments
• equipped with a large-screen, high definitiondisplay to allow for all firefighters on the entryteam to view the action
• designed with the most ergonomically correctbalance, with the center of gravity located in theusers hand

Other OptionsCarrying AttachmentsThe Evolution 4100 TIC comes standard with acaribiner attachment. Additionally, users canchoose to purchase any one of three optionalcarrying attachments:
• Wrist Strap/Bunker Clip - Attaches to the TICand includes a clip for securing the TIC tobunker gear while not it use.
• Shoulder Strap - Attaches to the TIC to allowfor easy carriage of the camera while not in use.FDNY strap available with seat belt styledisconnect.

The Tripod allows for stationary viewing of thethermal imaging camera. The Tripod must be usedwith the Tripod Adapter.

WARNINGS AND CAUTIONS" WARNING
1. The user must be trained and thoroughlyfamiliar with the proper operation andlimitations of the thermal imaging systemprior to use. Use in controlled live-burnexercises is suggested before using theequipment in actual emergency situations.Improper use of the equipment in ahazardous atmosphere could result inserious personal injury or death.
2. Do not rely on the thermal imaging systemas the sole means of navigation or deviatefrom standard fire-fighting navigationalpractices during use. Although the systemprovides an image in dark and smokyenvironments, the user may becomedisoriented or lost in such environments ifthe system becomes inoperative.
Most electronic devices will cease to operate atcertain high temperature extremes. Tests onthe Evolution 4100 TIC indicate that it willprovide an acceptable image whensubjected to an ambient temperature ofapproximately 120°C (248°F) for about tenminutes. Exposure to conditions exceedingthese will result in deterioration and loss ofimage.
3. Thermal energy is not transmitted through glassor underwater and may be reflected off ofsmooth surfaces. Disorientation may occur ifthe user is unaware of these properties.
4. This thermal imaging system is not rated as"Intrinsically Safe." Do not use the system inenvironments or atmospheres where staticor spark may cause an explosion.
5. Before entering a hostile environment, test thethermal imaging system as specified in theinstructions to ensure that it is functional.After each use, inspect the system todetermine if servicing is required.
6. Exposure to high temperature environmentsfor an extended period of time may causedegradation or loss of thermal image. Avoidheat saturation or over exposure of theequipment. If degradation of the thermalimage is observed, remove the equipmentfrom the high heat environment and allow itto cool until the thermal image returns tonormal; otherwise, the system may becomeinoperative.
7. Replacement batteries must exactly match theratings and configuration of those supplied
with the equipment. Use of unapprovedbatteries may render the system inoperative.
8. Do not remove the thermal imaging cameracover or casing as the system operates onhigh voltage. Only authorized personnel mayservice the unit.
FAILURE TO FOLLOW THE ABOVE WARNINGSCAN RESULT IN SERIOUS PERSONAL INJURYOR DEATH.
" CAUTION
1. Ensure battery is fully charged before use. Ifnot fully charged, the system will not operatefor the specified amount of time. Monitorbattery level during use and exit thehazardous area when a low battery warningis observed.
2. Electromagnetic radiation (radiotransmissions) may cause interference.Minimize nearby radio transmissions ifexcessive interference occurs.
3. To avoid lens fogging, the user may coatthe lenses and view finder with anti-fogmaterial (MSA P/N 13016).
4. Do not point the thermal imaging cameradirectly at the sun; otherwise, damage to thedetector may occur.
5. Do not drop the thermal imaging camera.Although the camera is designed towithstand normal impacts that occur in fireservice, such impacts may alter the focus ordamage the unit.
FAILURE TO FOLLOW THE ABOVE CAUTIONSCAN RESULT IN PERSONAL INJURY OREQUIPMENT DAMAGE.
LIMITATIONS
1. Although the Evolution 4100 TIC is IP67waterproof, the system does not provideunderwater thermal images.
2. The Evolution 4100 TIC does not provideimages through glass, water, or shinyobjects; these surfaces act like mirrors to thesystem.
3. The Evolution 4100 TIC does not improveimpaired vision. Users with impaired visionshould continue to use ophthalmic deviceswhile using the system.

OPERATIONOPERATION
Getting StartedThe rechargeable batteries supplied with theEvolution 4100 TIC must be fully charged beforeuse. Also, periodically check and replace thebattery in an actively-used imager.
• See "Battery Care and Installation" later in thismanual.
TURNING THE CAMERA ON AND OFF
Normal Mode1. To turn the
camera ON,press thePOWER(green)buttondirectly underthe viewfinder (seeFIGURE 5)and hold forapproximately one second.
2. Verify the camera is functioning by aiming atan object or person until the thermal imageappears in the camera viewer.
• The thermal imaging camera is now readyfor use.
NOTE: The Evolution 4100 POWER buttonhas a momentary pushbutton switchthat requires deliberate, one-secondactivation to operate. This is toprevent accidental shut-OFF. Rapidrepeated depression of the POWERbutton may cause the TIC start-upsoftware to lock, and a picture willnot display (LEDs may still activate).If this condition occurs, simply turnthe TIC OFF and back ON usingslow, deliberate button presses.
Standby ModeTo conserve battery consumption, the camera isequipped with a Standby Mode feature.
3. To activate, press the POWER (green)button until:
• The display shuts OFF.
• The flashing GREEN POWER LEDactivates.
4. To return to Normal Mode from Standby Mode,press the POWER (green) button until:
• The display immediately reactivateswithout warm-up time.
• The flashing GREEN LED changes tosolid GREEN.
Turning the Camera OFF5. To turn the camera OFF, press and hold the
green POWER button in for four seconds.
• As a safety feature to avoid inadvertentpower-offs, the green POWER buttonmust be held for four seconds to turn OFFthe camera.
• The green POWER LED flashes duringthe power-off countdown to confirmeffective button press.
• When all LED indicators shut OFF,the user may release the greenPOWER button.
• The camera is now OFF.

On-Screen IndicatorsA - Low Sensitivity Mode Indicator - Anon-screen sensitivity indicator ("L") informs theuser when the camera is in the low sensitivity(Firefighting) mode.

• This mode occurs when the thermal imagersenses an environment above 150°C.
• Dynamic Range is extended while in this mode toprovide greater image details of the surroundings.
In high-heat conditions, the TIC will automaticallyenter the Low Sensitivity (or Firefighting) mode.While in Low Sensitivity mode, the TIC’s dynamicrange is extended, thereby allowing the user tomake better distinction of objects and people withina higher temperature range. When the Evolution4100 TIC is in Low Sensitivity mode, the letter "L"appears in the lower left corner of the display.
B - Shutter Indicator - An on-screen indicatorthat tells the user when the TIC is shutteringappears as a green square in the upper leftcorner of the display.
While the TIC is in operation, it is periodicallynecessary for the TIC to refresh the focal plane inorder to operate properly. This occurs via aninternal shutter mechanism. When the TICshutters, the image on the display temporarilyfreezes for about one second. Shuttering canoccur more frequently in higher heat conditions.This is normal for all microbolometer - based TICs.
C - Optional Quick-Temp Indicator - On-screenoperating Quick Temp spotter and vertical bargauge spans temperatures from 32°F (0°C) to300°F (150°C) in High Sensitivity mode and 32°F(0°C) to 1000°F (500°C) in Low Sensitivity modefor objects located in the spotter. The digitaltemperature feature displays the approximatenumber value of the temperature of objectslocated in the spotter.
LED IndicatorsD - Over Temperature Warning - Warningactivates when the system electronics approachmaximum recommended operating temperature limits.
• Not lit indicates system is withinoperational thermal limits
• Flashing Red indicates the TIC hasexceeded recommended operationalthermal limits.

Most electronic devices will cease to operateat certain high temperature extremes. BATTERY CARE AND INSTALLATIONRECHARGEABLE NIMH BATTERIES
The Evolution 4100 TIC is shipped with two NickelMetal Hydride (7.2-volt, 3.6 AH or greater) batteries.
THEORY OF OPERATION
The Evolution 4100 TIC utilizes a unique batterymanagement system. The Evolution 4100 TIC canrun from either one or two batteries. With onebattery, the TIC will run for 2.5 hours at 72oF(22oC) while saving the weight expense of asecond battery. The battery can be placed ineither battery slot.
For applications requiring a longer run time, twobatteries can be installed, enabling the TIC to runfor five hours at 72oF (22oC). On power up, theTIC will analyze the batteries and determine whichone has more capacity. The electronics will thenuse that one first. When that battery is completelydischarged, the electronics will automatically switchover to the second battery. Uninterrupted TICoperation will continue until the second battery isdrained. The discharged battery’s correspondinggreen LED will be dimmed to allow for quickidentification and replacement. Because the TIConly drains one battery at a time, the dischargedbattery can be removed without affecting cameraoperation.
BATTERY INSTALLATION AND CARE
1. Place the unit on a clean,non-abrasive surface.
2. Unhook the battery latch and open thebattery compartment.
3. Place the battery inside either batterycompartment with the battery logo and arrowfacing upward and the contacts facing intoward the front of the camera.
4. Close and latch the battery compartment.
BATTERY MAINTENANCEAfter each use, inspect:
• battery contacts for damage• batteries and battery adapters for damage
or leakage• charger switches for proper indication that
systems are running correctly• contact points for corrosion or damage to
ensure battery charger is charging by:• placing a battery into the charger

INSTALLATION GUIDELINES
The charger has the flexibility to mount on theback surface and both left or right sides. Select alarge flat surface area for mounting that will allow
easy access of Evolution 4100 TIC for storageand adequate cable length for electricalconnection(s). Take care to install charger in anarea protected from water spray and extremetemperature conditions (see "Limitations").
Mounting Hanging Channels1. Drill two holes in both Unistrut channels (A),
using a 9/32 (.281) drill.
• Drill mounting holes one inch in from theedge of Unistrut channels.
2. Position top Unistrut channel on the cab wallat least four inches away from overheadobstructions.
3. Using a Unistrut channel as a template, drilltwo holes into cab wall with a #7 (.201) drill(FIGURE 10).
4. Tap both holes for 1/4-20 mounting bolts.5. Position bottom Unistrut channel on the cab

Power RequirementsAfter a complete discharge, the vehicle-mountedcharging system will consume enough current toeventually fully drain the battery if the vehicle
stands unused for longer than a 12-hour periodwithout supplemental battery charging.
Therefore, it is recommended that the charger beinstalled using any master ON/OFF switch wherepower comes directly from the battery orinstalled in a vehicle with a supplementalcharger, which is connected to AC power via ashoreline when the vehicle is stored.

Installation
1. Connect the positive lead #1 (FIGURE 14) ofthe prepared wires end of the power hookupcable to a fused, in-line connection with amaster switch, to the switched side ofignition, or power source of choice(see "Power Requirements").
2. Connect the negative lead #2 (FIGURE 16)ofthe power hookup cable to a confirmedground.
Note: The vehicle-mounted charging systemis protected from reverse polarity. Ifconnected backwards, the unit willnot function.
3. Connect the green charger’s connector of thepower hookup cable to the plug-in receptaclelocated (recessed) on the right side of theLED panel cover (if unit is standing upright).(See FIGURE 13.)
4. With power source ON, confirm that the centerpower status LED lights in green. If any otherresult occurs, see "TroubleshootingGuidelines" in the "Maintenance,Troubleshooting and Service," section of thismanual.
5. Place the Evolution 4100 TIC in the chargerand connect it to the charger by inserting theinterface cable male receptacle through thetop strap grommet and into the female

OperationOnce the Evolution 4100 TIC VMCS is correctlyinstalled, the charger is ready for operation. The VMCS is an automatic, sequential charger(one battery charges at a time). Battery #2 (on thebottom of the unit), if present and chargeable, willbe charged first, followed by Battery #1.
The power status LED indicator should alwaysremain green when the power source is on andproperly connected. If correctly installed andconnected to the Evolution 4100 TIC, thecharger’s status indicators will light as follows:

If new batteries are being used, it isrecommended that the Evolution 4100 TIC becompletely charged, discharged, and chargedagain prior to use.
The charging cycle takes approximately 4.5 hoursto completely charge a single battery, orapproximately nine hours for two batteries. Eachcharging cycle begins with a diagnostic period;therefore, charged batteries may show a chargingindication if the interface connector is removedand reconnected, or the power source ismomentarily lost.
Note: If the same batteries are usedconsistently in the Evolution 4100TIC, it is recommended that they berotated monthly (battery 1 andbattery 2 switched).

MAINTENANCE, TROUBLESHOOTING, AND SERVICECleaningShould the VMCS become dirty, clean all surfaceswith a soft, lint-free cloth. Under no circumstancesshould water or liquid cleaners be used on thedevice. Failure to comply may result in permanentelectrical damage to the unit.
Cleaning the Charging ConnectorOccasionally, the remote charging connector onthe Evolution 4100 TIC may become impactedwith dirt and debris. To clean the connector:
1. Gently dislodge and break up debris in theconnector using a small blunt tool, such asan O-ring removal tool (P/N 636060) orplastic stick (P/N 633411).
• Take care not to bend or break theconnector pins.
" WARNING
Wear eye or face protection when cleaningconnector to avoid eye injury. Failure toobserve this precaution may result in seriouspersonal injury.
2. Using a maximum 100 psi compressed airsource, blow debris pieces from the connector.
3. Repeat steps 1 and 2 until the majority ofdebris is removed.
4. Stubborn particles or debris may be furtherloosened by spraying a small amount ofcontact cleaner, such as WD-40, into theconnector. Allow a 30-second penetrationperiod; then, repeat steps 1 through 4 untilthe debris is completely removed.
Note: Users may prevent dirt and debrisbuild-up in the Evolution 4100 TIC’scharging connector by properlysealing the rubber connector plug.
" CAUTION
Do not use solvents or paint thinners to cleanthe TIC or VMCS; otherwise, the protectivecase may become damaged.

Internal PCB Fuse Replacement
A. Power LED will not light and other troubleshooting guidelines do not resolve the problem.
1. Disconnect power hookup cable bydisconnecting Phoenix connector fromplug-in receptacle on the right side of theLED panel.
2. Remove the screw from the top of the LEDpanel cover and remove cover.
3. Internal PCB fuse #1 is located next to thePhoenix connector on the circuit board.
Remove the fuse using plastic/nonconductive tweezers and replace with anew fuse (P/N 10036109).
Note: One spare fuse is provided with eachtruck charger unit and is storedmid-center on the bottom of thecircuit board.
4. Replace the LED cover panel, tighten theretaining screw at top, and reconnect thepower hookup cable to confirm correct LEDfunction.
B. Power Stats LED is red.

Interface Cable Replacement1. Disconnect power hookup cable by
disconnecting Phoenix connector fromplug-in receptacle on the right side of theLED panel.
2. Remove the screw from the top of the LEDpanel cover and remove cover.
3. Disconnect the interface cable bydisconnecting the five-pin JST connectorfrom the top left of the circuit board.
4. Remove the interface cable clamp screwsalong the interface cable at the base of theunit.
5. Remove the inoperative interface cable fromthe unit.
6. Feed the new interface cable (JST connectorend) through top, center cut-out at back ofthe shoulder strap compartment and connectit to the open connector at the top left of thecircuit board.
7. Remove the cable clamps from the oldinterface cable and position them along thenew interface cable.
8. Screw the interface cable clamps securely tothe housing, allowing approximately 14inches of free wire between the last cableclamp and the male camera interfaceconnector.
9. Replace the LED cover panel, tighten theretaining screw at top, and reconnect thepower hookup cable to confirm correct powerstatus LED function.
10. Insert the Evolution 4100 TIC and connect itto the charger interface cable to confirmcorrect battery status LED function.

TheSeller shall be released from all obligationsunder this warranty in the event repairs ormodifications are made by persons otherthan its own or authorized service personnelor if the warranty claim results from physicalabuse or misuse of the product. No agent,employee or representative of the Seller hasany authority to bind the Seller to anyaffirmation, representation or warrantyconcerning the goods sold under thiscontract. MAINTENANCE AND ADJUSTMENTSGeneral MaintenanceAfter each use, inspect:
• the Evolution 4100 TIC for structural, heatand/or chemical damage
• the mechanical hardware to ensure no screwsare loose and no O-rings or gaskets are looseor misplaced
• all lenses for heat damage, chemical damage,cracks and breaks
• to ensure that all warning labels are intact• battery - see "Battery Care and Installation".Note: Thermal Imaging Cameras not meeting
the above inspection must beremoved from service until theproper repairs are made.
CleaningAfter each use, clean all external surfaces (case,base, visor, lens, window and straps) by wipingwith a solution of mild detergent and warm water.Dry with a soft, lint-free cloth, to avoid scratchingthe optical surfaces.Periodically check connector terminals, videosocket, ON/OFF switch, locking latch and hinge forcontamination. Clean with a soft, lint-free cloth.

Do not remove the thermal imaging cameracover or casing as the system operates onhigh voltage. Only authorized personnel mayservice the unit.
FAILURE TO FOLLOW THE ABOVEWARNING CAN RESULT IN SERIOUSPERSONAL INJURY OR DEATH.

Do not use solvents or paint thinners to cleanthe Thermal Imager; otherwise, the protectivecase may become degraded.
SERVICE
If your Evolution 4100 Thermal Imaging Camera(TIC) is in need of service or repair, pleasecontact the MSA Service Center at1-877-MSA-FIRE.
Describe the problem to the Representative ascompletely as possible.
1. Verify with your Representative that theproduct should be returned to MSA.
2. Before returning the product, decontaminateand clean your Thermal Imaging Camera toremove any hazardous materials that mayhave settled on the product during use.
• Laws and/or shipping regulations prohibitthe shipment of hazardous orcontaminated materials.
• Products suspected of contamination will beprofessionally decontaminated at the customer’sexpense before servicing.
• Ship returned products (including those underwarranty) with pre-paid transportation charges;MSA cannot accept returned goods on afreight-collect basis.
